CV photo - What would you do?

My son (age 17, in year 12) is applying for summer work experience at a certain professional organisation and needs to submit a CV. We're considering whether to include a photo. My impression is that it is usual to include a photo now, especially as so many modern professionals have LinkedIn profiles.

The organisation's website has mugshots of some of their staff. They are mostly (not all) smartly dressed in sharp suits or female equivalent. The men generally look very serious, the women more relaxed and friendly/smiling.

Currently we only have one good photo of DS looking relatively smart - he is in a casual summer shirt with an open collar and is relaxed and smiling. If he was to dress up in suit and tie for a home photo-shoot today he would have wild lockdown hair, a bad breakout of acne, and is unlikely to look relaxed or confident. The application needs to be made now, so I don't think we can wait to organise a more professional shot.

I think it would be best to include the photo he has rather than having no photo at all? Do you agree?

Absolutely no photo, what a terrible idea. I would think it very unprofessional and assume him very shallow if he thought decisions are made on appearance.

The UK is weird about photos on CVs, most other countries that I've worked in require it, and no-one gets 'biased'.
I bet they do.

Do you have photoshop. Pretty easy to photoshop his summer face onto a photo of him in a smart suit.

TinyTear · 02/02/2021 09:51

No,no photo in the UK

In Germany you have to have one and some companies do special CV photoshoots. not here

StillGoingToWork · 02/02/2021 09:52

We don't have them because it encourages bias. If you have latent bias against a group of people you could inadvertently be breaking the law.

As a hiring manager... Fuck no.

Leave it out.

(EU CVs tend to include them, which is fine as it's a cultural norm for those applications, but it's always a bit jarring if any UK based applicants add one in. It's wierd and potentially discriminating, and not even helpful for remembering people because e haven't interviewed yet during the initial CV sift. Pointless.)

Just another voice saying no photo.

EU- you Must include a Photo.
UK- you must NOT include a Photo

If you are not white, don't put your photo on LinkedIn.

I think they are generally more racist and sexist in Europe and the US than we aspire to be in the UK. I mean I know there is plenty of racism and sexism around, but we like to think there isn't. Part of our British reservedness I think.
