to think this is a nice idea?

It is my very big birthday shortly. Obviously having any sort of a gathering is off the cards, and I think a Zoom party would be horrible, but I also want to do something. I also want a really nice cake!

So, tell me is this a nice idea or terrible?

I was thinking of getting a very big cake, and then cutting and boxing it, with a little something, like a wedding-favour type thing, and delivering it (non-contact) around all the people I would have invited to my party?

I don’t want any presents, I’m a boring old fart and I don’t want people to feel obliged or anything, I’d rather give than receive. If you got a slice of cake and a little thing on your doorstep from a friend, in lieu of their party, would you think it was a nice idea? Or crap.

Yes = nice
No = crap

I think it's cute. If they don't want it they can always chuck it out.

Zarinea · 01/02/2021 13:44

I'd love this. It would be so special right now. Please do it!

SleepingStandingUp · 01/02/2021 13:45

Could you get yourself a really nice little cake and then cupcakes? I think a whole cupcake will probably travel better than a slice of cake and looks nicer for them

Titsinknicks · 01/02/2021 13:46

I'd love it. I'm often delivering/sending things to friends and it'd be nice to receive something for once GrinCake

mootymoo · 01/02/2021 13:47

I think it's a lovely idea. eBay has suitable boxes that even can be mailed. If you were my friend I would feel really special that you were so thoughtful - and promise belated drinks when the pubs reopen

Calmandmeasured1 · 01/02/2021 13:48

I'd think it was a lovely thing to do ....but then wouldn't eat it in case you asymptomatically had Covid.

Bigbigbirfday · 01/02/2021 13:52

Calmandmeasured1 that’s a good point! Shock

Maybe the individual cupcakes are a better idea? I thought about a candle instead but maybe that’s a bit RIP?Grin

My local bakery is doing cake in a tub, and we've had cake in a jar delivered too. I would agree on the not handling it unfortunately

XenoBitch · 01/02/2021 13:55

A lovely idea. Who doesn't like a bit of cake showing up on their doorstep? Grin

biddybird · 01/02/2021 13:57

I would chuck the cake away not knowing if it was contaminated in some way. I think you'll be wasting your money. It won't travel well, either.
Can't you send some other kind of treat? A wrapped chocolate for example?

Berriesandpineconess · 01/02/2021 13:57

It’s a lovely idea ❤️

wowfudge · 01/02/2021 13:59

I think get the cake maker to do the packing and posting, adding your message.

ParkheadParadise · 01/02/2021 14:01

Yes, I would love that.

This kind of fun sponge comment is annoying! There are lots of places you can order cake by post. It is packaged so as to travel well. I know I've both been sent it and have ordered it. Strict food hygiene standards are in place and it's a lovely idea.
Ragwort · 01/02/2021 14:03

I think it's a lovely idea, it wouldn't even cross my mind that the cake might be 'contaminated' - but you know your friends, what are they likely to think?

biddybird · 01/02/2021 14:04

@wowfudge

OP is suggesting buying a large cake and then cutting/packaging it herself.
In any case the recipients won't know who has/hasn't handled it beforehand.

GoodbyeH · 01/02/2021 14:05

A friend did this for her DCs birthday. Delivered a box of party food and cake! It was lovely. We took photos and sent them to her DC Smile

bloodywhitecat · 01/02/2021 14:06

Would there even be enough of the virus on the cake if the OP were infectious when she cut it? I'd eat it and take my chances. I think it's a lovely idea OP.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 01/02/2021 14:07

That sounds a lovely idea. If there's a slice leftover ...... Blush

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 01/02/2021 14:07

It's a nice idea, but honestly not something I would do. I would be getting the cake for me.

Hoppinggreen · 01/02/2021 14:07

I think it’s nice, I would love a cake turning up. I think cupcakes or similar would be better than 1 big cake though.

I am really sorry to say though I think it DOES technically break lockdown rules, you are only supposed to go out if essential or for exercise and this is neither. I wouldn’t judge or report you though

ArchbishopOfBanterbury · 01/02/2021 14:08

If we're still in lockdown, I don't think delivering cake would count as an essential journey.

Do the people you'd deliver to, live in walking distance, so you could do it as "excercise"?

FrancesHaHa · 01/02/2021 14:13

I would like this and think it's a lovely idea.

But based on previous threads there are lots of people who wouldn't even eat home made cake made by a friend or colleague in pre Covid times in case their kitchen was dirty etc, so you will definitely gets lots of replies from people who would throw it in the bin. Only you know if your friends are like this!

Bigbigbirfday · 01/02/2021 14:14

The ones who I could walk to, then I would. The rest, I could drop on the school run. And the out of towns I could post.

I thought about sending something like the Biscuiteers type thing, then I have nothing to do with the production, but they’re crazy expensive for what they are, and also I don’t want it to come off as “it’s my birthday, I’m reminding you so you can send me a present.” Arrgghhh I’m overthinking.

Bigbigbirfday · 01/02/2021 14:15

Ok I’ll order a cake just for me. I want a nice cake! I’ll get a small one for just me and my kids and bubble.

So that moves on them to professionally made favours/cupcakes/biscuits etc
