School holidays - 2 weeks in Feb and 1 week at Easter?

Genuine AIBU question from mum of 5-year-old.

Should schools give kids a longer break in February - 2 week half term - while the majority are home schooling and then cut short the Easter break to a week?

I’ve just looked at the calendar and if the kids do go back on March 8 it seems crazy to then have 2 weeks holiday on April 1st!

Our daughter’s class has been closed since Dec 4th and she is really missing social interaction with other small people, as well as structure and teaching from someone who knows what they are doing... I.e not me!

Would like to hear other people’s thoughts.

Apparently we don’t have kids either, what would teachers with babies do? Pay for childcare whilst working for free?

KeyboardWorriers · 31/01/2021 20:52

I am really not expecting the schools to go back before Easter anyway? Maybe the exam years and year R will, but most won't.

I am sure many posters will say yes to this Hmm

For the love of god.
They won't dick about with the holidays
They won't get kids to repeat years

LucyLockdown · 31/01/2021 21:39

Why are you worried about how much school your five year old has missed. They're FIVE!

HikeForward · 31/01/2021 21:42

Don’t forget most keyworkers have already arranged their leave and shift patterns to cover the half term and Easter hols! Especially NHS staff as our annual leave year starts afresh after the end of March. Lots of us don’t have 2 weeks of leave left to use in Feb as we’re nearing the end of the year!

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts.
I appreciate seeing the bigger picture and actually agree with you now!
I think I’m overly sensitive to the social impact because she’s an only child. Thanks for your comments.

(Those who commented ‘your idea is dreadful’ or ‘they’re FIVE!’ etc... Sheesh! I was looking for genuine debate, not to be cut down!
My hope is you are more helpful in discussions with your friends and loved ones... And maybe try the Calm app! :-) )

And thanks @hikeforward. I didn’t realise NHS annual leave follows the financial year.

Thanks for all you do!

I have a sad feeling our children won't be going back on 8 March Sad

I was the one who said I think your idea is dreadful. After I'd explained why I thought it was dreadful. So, in other words, a reasoned opinion aka debate.

If you're primarily worried about the social side, I'm not sure why you are so keen to move a week of Easter holiday into February. Children will not be able to socialise with each in February half term. Hopefully they might be able to (in a limited way) by Easter. A 5 year old might be able to socialise at school to some extent, but this is not true for older age groups with all the Covid restrictions in place.

pigeonorstatue · 01/02/2021 08:45

@RedskyBynight I respect your opinion and think it is valid. I’m suggesting it would have been just as valid without the ‘dreadful’.
