And what line of work are you in?

Do the good bits massively outweigh the less good bits - or vice versa?

Thought this could be an interesting thread, to get some insights into what people do in their day to day at their job. There are lots of job titles out there where I only have the haziest idea of what people in those roles actually do!

I'm job hunting at the moment so a bit obsessed with jobs and careers and the roads people travel to build a career Blush

Best bit: lunchbreak
Worst bit: before and after lunch break

Nothing, and nothing.

Special Needs Teacher Love most things..great satisfaction in seeing children grasp things..fun with children..colleagues..never boring Dislike..constant new demands from government which gains nothing but adds to our time being spent writing policies etc. And teaching from home!
This ^. Although I do enjoy zoom but I still have 5 children in

Like: travel, decent pay/pension, flexible about wfh, friendly team

Dislike: very high pressure and high responsibility
, required to monitor emails/answer calls evenings and weekends and this is part of this area of law so it’s not a management issue really. I am constantly on the verge of burn out but don’t have the energy/savings to retrain in a different (9-5 type) career just yet.

Lawyer.

Best - working 3 days a week
Worst - having to work at the weekends to keep up

Teacher

Lecturer in nursing.
Like the fact we're respected and allowed to develop and innovate, love the actual teaching, colleagues are lovely. Holidays are good. The support you get for self development, can be creative. Totally flexible re how you work. As long as the works done management are fine.

Dislike, the money, paid a lot less than when I was clinical. The long unproductive meetings. The silly competitive nonsense you get in academia. The fact it's increasingly evident those at the top are men or childless women! Also feel a little deskilled sometimes. Teaching is easy compared to frontline clinical, even in a pandemic

However despite the dislikes I will never ever go back to purely clinical again. I still do a bit of consultancy work, but I think I'm a bit scarred from 20 years at the clinical front line to be honest! My previous role I had a nightmare micromanager and the role before even though I was part of a lovely team the work was horrific.

Like: Pay, current ability to work from home, the people I work with are nice

Dislike: In my current advancement I am completely out of my depth. I have to drive decisions but then big bosses always seem to think differently than me so I struggle to get a coherent message to come through. Everyone seems to be looking to me for the answers all the time. I am working endless hours and constantly worrying about what I haven't finished. I genuinely hate my job

YakkityYakYakYak · 30/01/2021 09:28

Head of HR

Likes: The Autonomy, it’s up to me to decide what me and my team spend our time on. My boss, she’s supportive, trusts me, but challenges me when it’s needed. And I like that our directors are genuinely compassionate people who want their employees to be happy, I would hate my job if it were otherwise.

Dislikes: Dealing with the small numbers of employees who are unhappy and just want to pick a fight. I find I can often spend a large proportion of my time dealing with this small number of negative people, and that detracts from me focusing my time on things that will benefit everybody else. I also hate when people try to pull me into their petty issues, rather than acting like adults and sorting it out themselves.
