To tell the teacher to tell the children to MUTE THE BLOODY LAPTOP

Listening in to the homeschooling, trying to keep my primary age child concentrating (in itself a full time job) trying to nudge him to answer the questions and talk to him about the task, I was completely put off by the other children constantly asking questions, talking over each other and asking bloody irrelevant questions. Like questions about Neighbours and hamsters. DS mutes himself as he was asked to do and only unmutes when asked to by the teacher. If we mute everyone we can't hear instructions and end up lost on the topic. I've emailed about this already, AIBU to email again. Its hard enough as it is! Do children interrupt during real classes?

In other online settings the host is able to mute all participants en made and unmute them individually as required. I’m not sure why this isn’t possible at school.

noblegiraffe · 28/01/2021 19:38

Yeah the teacher can mute them. Best bit about teaching online!

On a side note: primary kids talking about Neighbours??!!

Galvantula · 28/01/2021 19:41

Mine go on about the game Hello Neighbor incessantly, could be that. 😅

Yanbu though, it would help if the teacher just muted while they were giving instructions etc.

Subordinateclause · 28/01/2021 19:41

I can't mute my class on Google Classroom for some reason, they have to do it themselves. Luckily they are a very well behaved primary class and do exactly as told. We have microphones off unless answering a questions, even without talking the background noise makes it unworkable otherwise and I'd say most of them are in fairly quiet houses. It's frustrating as answering a question takes ages but I don't see how else to get round it. But yes, children absolutely interrupt in real classes and respond to maths questions with news about their pet guinea pig etc...

BlueTimes · 28/01/2021 19:42

The teacher is the host and able to mute. Maybe they want to create a more normal classroom environment for the children and allow them to chat to each other.

AppleKatie · 28/01/2021 19:43

The teacher should be demanding they mute.

But yes if left unchecked children are this annoying and worse in the flesh at school 🤣

samanthawashington · 28/01/2021 19:44

I know! 7 and 8 year olds don't need to watch neighbours! Teacher started out with telling them to mute, but I think has now given up. I don't know why she doesn't mute them. Sick of kid's parents wandering in and chatting. Its bloody stressful enough and DS isn't the most clever child and struggles to keep up, without constant jabbering. He has long standing hearing loss from non stop glue ear, so its really difficult for him to hear clearly as it is

Do children interrupt during real classes?

YES!!!!!! all the bloody time!
and get up to sharpen their pencil or ask to go to the toilet all the time or argue with the person next to them about where the rubber lives on the table etc etc etc
this is one of the many reasons teaching is so bloody hard!

samanthawashington · 28/01/2021 19:45

Neighbours and hollyoaks

Sometimes I mute myself Grin
Laiste · 28/01/2021 20:04

Can you unmute yourself and say ''sorry, we can't hear what you're saying Ms X ....''

She'll get the hint and remind others to all mute hopefully.

Our teachers can't remote mute. We have quite a strict policy of everyone on mute apart from the teacher unless answering. Yes it takes DD and the rest of them ages to unmute, everyone waiting patiently Grin

Evvyjb · 28/01/2021 20:08

Ahhhahahshhahahhah oh my lord - welcome to our world!

Can you imagine what it's like WITHOUT mute?!

samanthawashington · 28/01/2021 20:19

teachers need a mute button for the classroom, if this is anything to go by Grin

DD1 (15) goes to special school and her form class is hilarious. Dogs wandering in for a cuddle, kids in the background yammering on. Class mates going off topic. Absolute nightmare Grin

Do children interrupt during real classes?

Have you never been in the same room as children? Confused

CarlottaValdez · 28/01/2021 20:24

My 6 year old’s drama class is hilarious for this - teacher has them all on mute about 90% of the time so she’ll say “what’s your favourite animal” and all their little mouths are going. She’s just nodding and saying “oh brilliant!” at random. Seems to work pretty well!

B33Fr33 · 28/01/2021 20:24

DS's teacher allows five mins chaos. Then switches to her screen and mutes everyone using the "hand up" feature. Works fab.

InTheDrunkTank · 28/01/2021 20:27

Both my DC's teachers give warnings about this. Now it doesn't happen much and the classes work great.

tinytemper66 · 28/01/2021 20:31

Wait until secondary...no one says a word. I sit there looking at myself and avatars and initials. They often won't even say here/yma to the register. It is like pulling teeth. Quite soul destroying some lessons.

Monkeytennis97 · 28/01/2021 20:32

Do children interrupt in real classes?

😂😂😂😂 Yes! Every minute of every day.

Hi fellow Welsh teacher! (As in teacher in Wales. I teach English) If they don’t answer the register I mark them absent. If they don’t respond to direct questions thereafter, I mark them absent and demerit them. Teenagers are tough. It’s like this image.

University students are worse Grin, I’m one of the eldest in a class of 60, quite often scroll through zoom to see someone fast asleep, someone else cooking dinner, someone playing with the dog, someone with three kids on their knee, another arguing with flatmate, several texting ...

And every time the lecturers ask for comments - total silence . You can tell no ones listening when they stick us in break out rooms and the first response is, ‘Ah fuck, what were they talking about?’

Never thought of this. I bet it takes half the time to do a lesson with a mute button 🤣🤣🤣

Monkeytennis97 · 28/01/2021 20:41

Yup.
