To drive a 2 hour drive to collect a new puppy?

So have found a puppy. Much awaited family pet to replace my two dogs that passed away. It's a 2 hour drive away though. I live in Scotland. Unsure if I'm allowed to collect her? Wouldn't be entering breeders home and social distancing would be stuck to. Or would I not be allowed and get fined if stopped? Obviously don't want to break the law but the breeder isn't able to keep on to her as this could go on for weeks/months yet

I'd just go and get it. If Dominic Cummings can do "what's best for his family", you can do what's best for yours. 2 hrs isn't half as far as London to Durham!

PinkiOcelot · 28/01/2021 20:23

Just go.
Lovely puppy.

questionsquestionss · 28/01/2021 20:28

I would go but can't really find any clear guidance on whether it's actually allowed or not. Last thing I want is to drive halfway, get stopped, fined and have to turn back!

Also, breeder can't deliver due to same personal reasons that she can't hold on to the puppy for

We are driving an hour next week to pick up our puppy. The breeder can’t keep him and we’ve stuck to all the rules since lockdown started so I don’t feel bad. We won’t be stopping on the way and won’t be going inside.

TheCanyon · 28/01/2021 20:48

We got our wee pup delivered to us tonight by the breeder, same council area but 25 miles/50 min drive away. They said they had someone buy one of their pups from perthshire, we're the borders so the buyers are almost 2 hours away and are waiting a couple weeks to see what will happen first.

I have to say that getting the pup was my only worry when the lockdown was announced. I don't know if I could wait, but then there's no bloody police here anyway so provided I could go straight there and back without stopping anywhere and handover pup outside, I'd go.

Just go I would. I wouldn4 trust anyone else to pick up my new puppy. Wear a mask and use anti bac and you’ll be fine

tttigress · 28/01/2021 20:50

I would just pick it up tbh

TwelvePaws · 28/01/2021 20:53

I would go and get the puppy as the breeder can’t bring her to you. Just don’t decide she’s too much hard work after a few months like a few other arseholes on here ! Wink

questionsquestionss · 28/01/2021 20:55

Definately not, had my last two dogs 17 and 18 years! So this one will be just as much part of the family

You can collect the puppy -

Breeders and rescue centres should make arrangements to deliver your pet to you when it is ready to be rehomed. Where this is not possible, and it is reasonably necessary for the pet’s welfare, you may collect the animal. You should collect your pet by appointment only.

Different country but yeah it's worth finding out before you go. "I didn't really know who to ask but mumsnet said it would be OK" probably won't work if you get stopped.

WhoseThatGirl · 28/01/2021 20:59

Hang on that is just England sorry

powershowerforanhour · 28/01/2021 21:00

Whosethatgirl post much more useful than mine. A web reference ending in .gov.uk is a much better thing to cite if you're stopped. I'd print a copy to bring with you.

Brunt0n · 28/01/2021 21:02

Just go and be prepared to pay the £200 fine if you get caught. What other option is there if you’re adamant the (backyard) breeder can’t deliver?

questionsquestionss · 28/01/2021 21:05

Backyard breeder? It Definately is not! I've done my research. And wouldn't be paying what I'm paying if it wasn't done properly! So would appreciate if you save your judgment for elsewhere please. Thank you

What a beautiful puppy. I’d go.

LimitIsUp · 28/01/2021 21:18

Ah, just go and pick up your gorgeous pup and don't worry about it

Christmasfairy2020 · 28/01/2021 21:24

What type of dog is she. I want a dog x

Jjacobb · 28/01/2021 22:54

I have no idea if puppy collection is considered essential travel but I am shamelessly taking the opportunity to show off our lockdown puppy.
We traveled three hours and met the breeder halfway.

ladylunchalot · 28/01/2021 23:04

Not sure that would count as essential travel as per guidance from SG:
www.gov.scot/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-stay-at-home-guidance/

UnityUnited · 28/01/2021 23:07

There was an article in the local newspaper recently about someone travelling miles to pick up a puppy they’d bought. The police sent them home without the puppy because it wasn’t an essential journey.

MustardMitt · 28/01/2021 23:22

Well a couple from Liverpool were fined for driving to Milton Keynes to collect a dog so I’d say no.

MustardMitt · 28/01/2021 23:22

Ha @UnityUnited how did I miss that! Grin
