To be so so so sick of the news - neighbour problem

I live in a terrace and my next door neighbour has the news on constantly. If I'm downstairs, I can hear it all of the time unless I have music or something on. It's constantly Covid doom and gloom and I can't take it much longer. I've spoken to him multiple times but he won't do anything. Council have said it's not a noise nuisance and so can't do anything. I've bought wireless headphones and wear them lots but I just sometimes want silence.

It might be Covid doom and gloom I get you there but unless you are going to pay his rent or mortgage then you don't get to tell him what he watches on his TV.If the council have told you it's not a noise problem then harsh it sounds you can't tell other people what to do In their homes .If it is winding up so badly the only other option is to move.

HandsFaceLace · 27/01/2021 19:24

It is noise nuisance as it prevents peaceful enjoyment of your home. There is a law that stipulates this - constant loud tv noise is also an accepted category in itself. Don't let the council fob you off as that's exactly what they're doing.

QuestionableMouse · 27/01/2021 19:25

Thank you for that very helpful post. Moving isn't an option.

It's honestly relentless and is on the vast majority of the day and I feel seriously depressed by it. (To the point where it's a relief to be out of the house)

How loud is the noise , op ?

QuestionableMouse · 27/01/2021 19:36

Loud enough that I can hear it anywhere downstairs. Our living rooms share a wall and I'm assuming he has the TV mounted on the wall.

I have to have music on all the time to drown it out. (I can't bear white noise!)

I never used to mind before he had the news on constantly. I can't take much more of the constant doom and gloom.

I was just telling you as I saw it .You are saying you object to the news being on I said you can't control what your neighbour watches that is his right. If it is too loud then yes you need to get the council to give you equipment to record how loud it but if it isn't recorded as it is not too loud and it is the fact he has the news on then there is nothing you can do .That's not being unhelpful that is stating the facts you can't control what your neighbour watches Hmm.

Zoomies06 · 27/01/2021 22:08

is recorded not isn't

SquirtleSquad · 27/01/2021 22:10

It's not really a noise complaint if you didn't mind before, but now do purely down to the tv programme of choice.
Had you complained previously too about the volume?

Rightleftupdown · 27/01/2021 22:14

Can you put up insulation type soundproof boarding up? 15mm deep and in panels like plaster board. Not expensive and will Save your sanity

GreenSlide · 27/01/2021 22:20

Silicone earplugs are good.

Chloemol · 27/01/2021 22:27

Just keep banging in the wall asking him to turn it down

QuestionableMouse · 28/01/2021 11:05

I really don't want to bang every time. I live alone and he scares me a bit because he's so unpredictable!

Soundproofing is the way forward. Worth every penny

Propagandalf · 28/01/2021 11:48

Turn your TV up to full blast and play George Orwell's "1984" on repeat. After all, 1984 and the covid-1984 news that he's watching is both propaganda.
