To ask why my resting heart rate is so high??

I wouldn’t say I am SUPER fit but I at least go for about an hour long walk every day (would go more than once if we were allowed!!) and before gyms were closed I used to to to spin class a few times a week etc. I have a corporate job (now wfh!) so don’t move a lot while working but I make an effort to keep moving during the day. I’m also towards the lower end of healthy BMI (although don’t regularly weigh myself but know I haven’t put on weight since I last checked, if anything I’ve lost weight)

I am 32, generally healthy. I can run 5k and be tired but not totally dying.

Yet, my resting heart rate (according to my Fitbit) seems to remain between about 72 and 78BPM which seems really high?!?

The only time it was lower (about 68!) was when I didn’t move for about 2 weeks as I was ill with covid!

Is it just that my Fitbit is wrong? Or is that relatively normal??

I can’t help thinking for someone who’s probably fitter than a lot of people, that seems really high and I’m not sure what to do or if I should be worried.

This is really interesting. I have always had a low heart rate hovering in the mid 50s (currently moderately fit and low no but has always been low. When i was at school we all had to take our heart rate and I kept having to redo mine as it was so much lower than everyone else’s so I assume it’s just the way I’m built.
My mum has a similar heart rate but has had high blood pressure and overweight so am sure there’s a genetic element to it.

Also find if I’ve had a boozy few nights it goes up a few bpm.

Hi Op I have a similar concern my resting pulse is usually high 70s. What worries me is it often remains high while I sleep. I work Wednesday- Friday & today, despite having only done 911 steps I have 8 hours fat burn ( above my resting heart rate of 79). On Wednesday, I did 1526 steps and had a fat burn of 13 hours!!
I’m not always so sedentary but some days when my pulse is racing I can have a fat burn of 17 hours, including when I’m asleep.
I drink 2 cups of tea AM & have switched to chamomile tea during the day. I rarely drink wine now but if I have even one small glass, my heart races for most of the night.
It does worry me but I’m otherwise healthy, not overweight & eat relatively well , blood pressure fine etc.

72-78 is not high. I'm a doctor if that helps.

It's not a great measure of your general health either, not only because it's right bang in the middle of average. I'd put much more emphasis on how much you exercise, how comfortable you are while exercising, smoking status, alcohol consumption, BMI, waist to hip ratio, blood pressure, and diet.

As others have said, it's a normal heart rate.
I don't think a low resting heart rate is a sign of super fitness. Mine has always been in the low 50's and I don't do any proper exercise, just a daily dog walk.
