to not understand the obsession with 4x4s

Midlandsmum42 · 26/01/2021 12:46

I really don't understand why there are so many 4x4s on the road in cities and the country, half of the parents have them on the school run (when there was a school run). They are so bad for the environment and too big and unnecessary. They weren't needed in the past and aren't needed now. Completely understand why a farmer needs one or someone on construction sites but driving kids to school!!!

The 4wd won’t help when you’re braking! Fair point.

Ileflottante · 26/01/2021 19:17

@BringPizza

Well, quite. these threads always push my buttons though. I should know better than to reply. It's like feeding the youtube educated science deniers on FB

Same here. It’s true of any thread I see on cars. The lack of understanding of motoring always winds me up and leads me to think it’s not the people in the ‘big cars’ that are the danger on the roads.

HalfGirlHalfCake · 26/01/2021 19:20

We have a massive 4x4. We have modified it to shoot flames from the exhaust and it has blades attached to each wheel

Parking is not a problem. I just generally abandon it across two disabled bays, park on double yellows or mount the pavement

How is for example the Mitsubishi Outlander (plug-in) less environmentally friendly than a smaller petrol car?!

WeAreHalfWayThere · 26/01/2021 19:32

Higher up - you feel much safer once you have had one particularly on a motorway

I dream of this. For the DRL twats, middle lane hoggers, people who drive at 40 regardless of the road they’re on, shit parkers and people who can’t reverse (park/into passing spaces).
Kazzyhoward · 26/01/2021 19:37

The reason for a lot of crew cab, flat bed, ones is that they are classed as vans for tax, so lots of self employed buy them to get the VAT back and cost set against their profits. That's perfectly allowed even for businesses who don't actually "need" a van for their trade. It's been the case for a decade or two, so successive govts have not felt minded to close the loophole. A classic case of unexpected consequences.

ThatchersCold · 26/01/2021 19:37

Towing my horse box.
Towing my caravan.
Getting to the horse when the lanes are deep in snow (like at the weekend).

That kinda thing.

NellyJames · 26/01/2021 19:43

@Countdowntonothing, none of those offer 7 seats that are designed to be up permanently whilst still having a good boot space that will take a pram and holdalls. None had a decent crumple space between the third row head rest and the back of the car.

I have also fitted a MN detector to my massive flame shooting 4x4. If it shows a MN poster in the vicinity I make sure I park in a parents & child space - or even across two if possible

I was talking about the likes of BMW X3/5 Audi Q5/7 Discos Range Rovers etc sorry if I wasn’t using the right term. Glad I’m not the only one with these views

@HalfGirlHalfCake I hope you’ve installed massive subwoofers to blast out inappropriate music too.

And massive spotlights that I keep on full beam when arriving home late at night, whilst listening to drill music at full volume

@Countdowntonothing, maybe! Grin
The Volvo allows me to have 2 seats up in row 2 with the one behind the driver sat down flat in the footwell. We have just one of the back 2 up. This means if the worst happened and we had an accident, my older daughter could also get out safely. Our dopey dog sits next to my daughter in the back. I guess I was also very attracted to the split tailgate which has been fantastic for muddy dog and muddy kids. Not to mention a boot that’s waist height and how good that is for shopping etc. That tailgate is the main reason I put off changing my old Xc90 for the new one. My new one is a lovely drive but I really miss that tailgate.

2021namechanger · 26/01/2021 20:42

halfgirl don’t forget to make sure to Rev that engine nice and loud at 6am. What you’re ok to do though is take up 5 on street spaces even if it pisses off your neighbours because this is MN and “nobody has a right to an on street space”.

We have two all-wheel drive cars. One is a smallish Subaru Impreza sedan and one is a mid-sized Subaru Forester cross over. They both have good fuel economy for their size and we do need the Forester for things like taking the kids and all of their stuff to uni. So no guilt here.

MsPeachh · 26/01/2021 20:51

Awful things! I live in a narrow village where most people park on the street. A lot of the neighbours have a small car too, but the SUVs have started appearing more and more, hindering everyone else’s available parking space and ability to squeeze down the roads.

Funnily enough, we live near a hospital and have lots of doctors as neighbours, and they aren’t the ones flashing their wealth.

When I was growing up, two kid families had a Ford Focus or a Golf, and we all survived the ride without suffocating!

gingganggooleywotsit · 26/01/2021 20:53

Status symbol for lots.. especially when used in built up cities

My dad had a Ford Cortina he managed to fit all 6 kids in the backseat somehow 🤣🤣

MsPeachh · 26/01/2021 20:56

Also the headlights of SUVs which are at just the right level to shine directly in your face and blind you when driving at night... Angry
