This shouldn’t be the difficult bit but where might I find a suitable monologue?

Posting for traffic really but really struggling with this...
my dd(13) wants to take part in an acting competition at school. Given that they’re all at home at the minute and can’t put on a play they have been asked to film themselves performing a 1-2minute monologue.
She has never done anything like this before but she’s keen to take part so I’m trying to help. But where to start?

Having googled monologues for teens, children, females etc. I’m struggling to find something short and suitable (no swearing or reference to sex etc.). Looking for a monologue should you be the east bit right?

Any suggestion of where I might find something suitable? It would be a real confidence boost for her to do something like this so I’m really trying to find something suitable that she’ll be confident delivering.

Try looking at lamda set texts. Dd did one from Anne of Green Gables for example.

Yvaine has a monologue about love in Stardust, would that be of any help?

What about her favourite plays or films? Books or characters? What issues does she care about? What is she Interested in right now?

TrixIrl · 25/01/2021 21:16

What about something like the poem from 10 ten things I hate about you? Something relatable for a teenager?

Dobbyismyfavourite · 25/01/2021 21:17

Try googling LAMDA grade 4 monologues as this should be geared to your DD's age group.

Monologues my DD has done:
My Mother said I never should, Doris' monologue.
Androcles and the Lion
DNA Leah's monologue on happiness, this is a dark play so may not be appropriate.

You can always check out a lower grade as your DD hasn't done anything like this before. Good luck to your DD. Also just to say drama is amazing for girls and their confidence and if she enjoys this challenge LAMDA lessons are good fun.

Thank you for all the advice. Had expected to get absolutely zero response. In answer to the person who asked what her interests are or favourite books are well she’s not read anything for pleasure for a long time. Her hobbies and interests have dwindled in lockdown to watching YouTube and TikTok! She used to love reading.

Loved this one. Still often find myself saying it to myself whenever I have a few minutes to myself.

Roselind's epilogue to As you alike It.

The National Theatre do a lot of anthology books of audition monologues, I think they do one specifically for young people. If you don’t fancy buying a whole book though, off the top of my head a few plays with longer passages for teen girls worth googling!
Once A Catholic
Teechers
Chatroom
Ruckus in the Garden
Romeo and Juliet

Joyce Grenfell did some good ones. ‘Nursery School’ is great.

‘George...don’t do that.’

Why does it have to be from a female?
I personally love Henry V - once more unto the breach.
