Cure for fungal big toenail infection

Toenailsupportgroup · 25/01/2021 16:57

AIBU to ask if anyone has found anything to permanently get rid of this. I've had this problem for years and I've tried painting various treatments on and it seems to be just in the top half of my toenail but never grows out completely. Please recommend any products that truly work!

Placemarking.
I have this problem on all the toes of my right foot.
Toddler stamped on big toe nail and it fell out (bleurgh)
Never grew back okay and it spread to the other toes despite my care :(

Laser treatment. Quite expensive about a grand last time I looked

Toenailsupportgroup · 25/01/2021 17:02

@52andblue it's rubbish isn't it? I don't feel I can ever go for a pedicure because of it although having to do my own probably saves me a fortune. Every cloud eh!

Husband suffers, get prescription for tebanofen. Sorted! Just saved you a load of money if you were looking at spending more than however much it is for some medication ✌🏼

I defeated this a few years ago, but my method takes patience. It is cheap though. Cut your toenail as short as you can bear. If you can cut the worst bit at an angle then do. File the top of the nail as well. Then, every time you shower, put neat tea tree oil on it. You can do this before bed too and then stick some socks on. Do it every day, keep cutting the nail down. Took me probably 6 months to get rid.

Anyone else?

Seriously, Vick's Vapour Rub. Cleared up a long lasting, treatment resistant FNI within a week.

Toenailsupportgroup · 25/01/2021 17:09

Thanks @Babypug and @BobbinThreadbare123 didn't see your replies when I asked if there was anyone else? Will look into those too :)

I was going to have it a couple of years ago but was quite new procedure and they hadn't done enough to publish success rates. Might consider it again now as I still have my fungal infection. A chiropodist keeps on top of it so it doesn't look too disgusting but it never goes away. Alternatively you can get a prescription from the doctor but that can damage your liver.

Toenailsupportgroup · 25/01/2021 17:10

and thanks @kennelmaid - will try that one too!

Vicks and teatree didn't touch mine.

PeasNotBeans · 25/01/2021 17:12

Tablets. Mine just got worse abd I tried tea tree, vicks all sorts.

Tablets sorted it

Toenailsupportgroup · 25/01/2021 17:12

Thanks @saveforthat - I see you can buy your own laser for £90 on amazong to treat it at home.

Vicks worked a treat for me. I also invested in a Sterishoe to disinfect my shoes.

Toenailsupportgroup · 25/01/2021 17:13

Thanks @peasnotbeans - I've tried loads of things so it may come to that!

Thanks @shorthairlady - off to google sterishoe too :)

Didn't realise you could get laser on Amazon now. Will have a look.

Gastropod · 25/01/2021 17:17

Excilor Ultra - the once a day one.

I've tried absolutely everything, including Vicks and a variety of home made and over the counter solutions, and they always nearly cleared it up but then it came back as soon as I stopped. SImilar to you, just a part of the nail affected, but never went away completely.

The Excilor solution definitely works far better than anything I've ever used, and for the first time in years the entire side of my nail is completely clear of infection. You paint it on every day, peel off the next day and reapply. You can put nail varnish on over it, if you want. Wish I'd invested in it much earlier to be honest...

RamblingFar · 25/01/2021 17:18

Terbinafine tablets.

Tried all sorts for years, tablets sorted nails out in 6 months. I had to get a private prescription from an online chemist, so wasn't cheap. You also need regular blood tests and can't have certain food with them (no caffeine for example). However cheaper overall than all the other stuff I'd tried for years.

AuntyPonsonby · 25/01/2021 17:20

I had this on my big toe for years. I tried various remedies but nothing worked. In the end I accidentally damaged the toenail (by wearing trainers that were too tight all day), it turned black and dropped off, and the replacement which took 6 months to grow back was perfect!

I'm not sure I can recommend self harm as a solution, but it was painless, free, and a lot less hassle than the various cures that didn't work.

Shorthairlady · 25/01/2021 17:22

For any treatment to work successfully all shoes need to be disinfected in some way. No point treating the toes if they get pushed back into shoes with fungal spores lurking inside.

Tallybeebloom · 25/01/2021 17:35

I got rid of an infection I'd had for years by using bobbinsthreadbare's method.

I asked my friend who’s a podiatrist as I suffer too. He said stay away from the tablets, they can damage your liver.

So recently I had this problem with my nail after basically running my problems away during the summer lockdown! (Wales) i ended up basically taking the whole nail off with my clippers but by this point the nail was so brittle and breaking it didn’t even hurt 🤨 which actually worked and now it’s gone! Sorry if that isn’t very helpful
