To except council to replace bin!

Purplelemon7 · 25/01/2021 14:22

My general waste bin went missing immediately after the collection. I assume the bin men must have thrown it in the lorry. The council has recently changed to a cheaper contractor and we have had loads of complaints about them on our local village fb group.

I contacted the council who said they would investigate. After giving them a week to do their investigation they have come back to me to say they don’t replace bins. Why do I pay thousands of pounds every year in council tax?

Perhaps the contractor has to replace the bins ?

Hankunamatata · 25/01/2021 14:29

Unless you can prove contractor threw it in then you are going to have to replace it.

shitinmyhandsandclap · 25/01/2021 14:31

Yep it's annoying, we had to pay for a replacement one when ours was stolen

JiminyLeeCricket · 25/01/2021 14:36

Have a moan on at your local councillors on Twitter?

Buzlightyear1 · 25/01/2021 14:38

That’s really annoying my bin lid got broken by collection men and they replaced it right away . They didn’t question it , they couldn’t take the old bin as I had rubbish in it they then said they wouldn’t pick up the old bin as I can still use it which I don’t want to use as it has not lid so animals get i. So I had to get rid myself

GreenSlide · 25/01/2021 14:42

Well the problem is you don't know the bin men threw it in the lorry (why would they do that?!) much more likely someone stole it in which case you will have to guard your new one like a hawk Shock

FangsForTheMemory · 25/01/2021 14:44

My current council provides bins. My previous two didn't AT ALL, except recycling sacks.

They don't "throw" it into the lorry. Bins can fall into the lorry if it's not been properly latched on. We saw it happen to our neighbours' across the road. Binmen didn't leave a note or report it. Council told neighbour they'd have to pay for a new one, it was only when they were told there was a witness to what had happened that they relented and provided one free of charge.
rubybarley · 25/01/2021 14:48

Much more likely a neighbour nicked it to replace theirs. When you get a new one cover it in gaudy stickers/ paint

DioneTheDiabolist · 25/01/2021 14:49

Ours don't replace bins either. You have to pay or steal someone else's. All our bins come in straight after collection!

HorseOfPhillipMoss · 25/01/2021 14:53

We don't get bins just have to put bags out, foxes cause havoc so we had to go and buy one and we have to take the bags out and put them by the road for collection

WeAllHaveWings · 25/01/2021 14:57

My niece has had to pay to replace hers twice in the last 6 months.

They have a problem in her area where teens steal them and set them alight (something about getting high on the fumes, but not sure if that is true). Police are aware but can't do much.

She has to leave it outside to be picked up by the bin men, there is nothing she can do to stop it happening other than guarding the bin which isn't practical.

ChronicallyCurious · 25/01/2021 15:30

Might be worth a walk around the streets near by to yours to see if it’s there. We lived in a horrible house last year where our neighbours regularly robbed our bins. We painted on them in luminescent paint and still often found them on the street next door/in other peoples gardens. Once we found it on the street next door and knocked for it back which they refused to give so we had to wait until 3am and steal it back. 😂

Why do I pay thousands of pounds every year in council tax?
Well, it isn't just for a plastic bin.

Same here. If you want a bin, you have to buy your own.

And we pay the 5th highest council tax in the country and seem to get precious little for it!

Hilda40 · 25/01/2021 16:17

My neighbour witnessed my bin accidentally falling into the lorry so they replaced it without a quibble.

FoxyTheFox · 25/01/2021 16:53

This happened to us once when the rubbish bin and the recycling bin both went missing and council said we would have to pay for new ones. I reminded the council that they own the bins so they are responsible for them and that they have a legal obligation to remove our household waste. I said I would meet them halfway by dropping off my bagged household waste at their branch office which was around the corner from our house at that time and that I'd just stop recycling altogether. New bins arrived a couple of days later.

tommika · 25/01/2021 17:32

Councils aren’t responsible for providing bins, prior to wheelie bins people would buy their own bins, (that’s partly why back in the 80s the show 321 gave a dustbin as the booby prize)
When lifting bin lorries were brought in the council or the contractor provided the initial wheelie bins.

Some councils will provide them, and you can check the proper local policies on providing them due to loss, damage etc by following the link below :
www.gov.uk/recycling-bin

Unless it has tipped into the van the most likely situation is it’s been blown down the road or kidnapped by a neighbour

Cabinfever10 · 25/01/2021 17:40

I feel for you I had a similar argument with my council but luckily they had left my half crushed bin (only because I watched the whole thing ) after many back and forth arguments they finally replaced my bin but tried to charge me for taking the mangled 1 away ShockGrin

Frankley · 25/01/2021 17:48

When my bin cracked down the side the council replaced it, also when little food bin broke (due to binmen throwing it back onto ground) it was replaced

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 25/01/2021 17:49

Like some others we just get bin bags provided so have to provide a bin if we want one. Everyone does after 1 week as foxes run riot. If the council usually provide the bins I’d ask how to get a replacement.

NiceTwin · 25/01/2021 17:54

I used to live next door to a monastery that was home to an order of nuns.

They nicked my bin Shock, the had no shame went I went round to fetch it.

The one time ours dropped into the wagon, the council replaced free of charge.
We also had a lid break, they came and gave us a new one and took the broken one to be repaired.

DinosaurDigestive · 25/01/2021 18:01

Where I am and if any bins go missing the council do replace them free of charge.

I wouldn't be impressed at all with being expected to pay for a replacement when it wasn't through any fault of my own! Money is tight for a lot of people just now so some might not have the spare money available for a replacement bin!
