to consider applying for a TV show?

I have just sprouted a head full of grey hairs which has reminded me that I am getting older and I feel I have had a fairly boring life.

I feel I am in a movie and I am playing the wrong character. I have a 9-5 job that is nice enough with a good team but I want to feel like I have lived, done many crazy and exciting things, made friends, made mistakes, and be able to talk to a stranger at a bar and feel like and interesting person.

I have tried lots of clubs and activities such as learning to fly a plane, but I have just never felt excited by in and felt I was looking for an adventure rather than a one off.

I was destined to travel for a year and have been saving up for years but corona has taken a hit on my savings and I am very low income. And I don't think I iwill be travelling for a while.

It came to me the other day that I could be on a TV show. Nothing that requires general knowledge, but maybe Total Wipeout or one of these challenge shows like The Circle.

Am I barking up the wrong tree or are there other ways to make my life more exciting?

Try 'Tipping Point'. You can be thick as mince and still win £20k. Added benefit of being smirked at for daft answers and (wo)man-handled by Ben.

Stompythedinosaur · 25/01/2021 12:19

I think there's nothing wrong with it, if you think it would help. I suppose I wonder a bit if it would, though? Someone doesn't become an interesting person because they have been on a TV show.

I think women often become a bit invisible as they get older, and it's a horrible feeling. But it isn't esteem or attention from others that defines whether we are interesting or valid people. That is more down to the things we think and do in everyday life.

That said, if it is on your bucket list then absolutely go for it!

EmmaStone · 25/01/2021 12:21

Tipping Point is casting now...

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 25/01/2021 12:25

Nothing wrong with it, but might it just not be another 'one off' that would leave you searching for another thing?
I'm so glad you said a quiz show rather than Naked attraction or something like that, then I would have said you were bonkers.

abstractzebra · 25/01/2021 12:26

I've thought about this too!
A quiz rather than anything too physical for me. I'd quite like to do Pointless with my son or maybe The Chase, even though sometimes the sets of questions vary from ones I know everything to others I know nothing!
I was once interviewed on the street in Brighton for one of Gillian McKeith's diet programmes with my then partner but they called me back and asked if I'd do it without my boyfriend!!! I said no as I think they were suggesting that I would have a fake partner!
I'd happily be woman handled by Ben! 😍

EmmaStone · 25/01/2021 12:27

Oh sorry, I see you said not general knowledge. What do you expect to come of being on a TV show? Is it potential for prize winnings? Or say something like The Circle, for recognition? If so, I'd be quite careful on what you wish for, I don't think many reality stars come out unscathed, and if you then need to slot back into your previous life, you might find that to be impossible.

I think there are lots of ways to make yourself interesting - what do you find interesting about other people? I like people who can hold a conversation, who have (educated) opinions, who've seen outside of their little world, but who understand that a 2 week trip to India doesn't mean they suddenly have an insight into what it means to be Indian.

angelopal · 25/01/2021 12:29

Catchphrase would be my first choice if I was going to apply for a TV show. Crystal maze would be my next choice.

peughpeemy · 25/01/2021 13:08

thank you everyone :) @EmmaStone no I don't wish to be famous or to win the prize, I wish to feel like I am alive and have tried so many different things. I have been 'writing a book' my whole life when in reality I know I am no author.

I feel like there is something missing in my life and I have no idea what it is and I will find it by pushing myself out of my comfort zone. @angelopal I will look into these :D

I would caution against reality type shows such as the circle to anyone, but especially if you're wanting a thrill type experience to feel alive. A friend went on one, you're at the mercy of the producers storyline and can be cast as the villain with creative edits and she found it incredibly mentally draining rather than fun.

stackemhigh · 25/01/2021 13:14

Go for it! I wanted to go on the Weakest Link but friends looked at me like I was crazy when I mentioned it. Im no Judith Keppel but I went to uni and have a mentally demanding job is not sure why! I think a lot it rests on your luck on the day!

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 25/01/2021 13:17

For what it's worth, I think it's great that you are writing a book also fab that you learnt to fly.
If you think you're boring, God knows what you'd think of me.Grin

NoCauseRebel · 25/01/2021 13:20

I wouldn’t. The producers will cast you in whichever light they want to. I have a friend who has done numerous shows, weakest link/the chase/come dine with me and she’s come across really really badly and dare I say it, thick, and it’s not because of who she is but because of how she’s been portrayed.

On come dine with me the other contestants all slagged her off whereas she was talking herself up saying she knew it had gone really really well, so guessing that she’d been told the feedback was positive. She came last. Same with the Chase.

If I was watching those TV shows as an outsider i would think “bloody hell, what awful contestants,” when actually most of them are probably nothing like they’re being portrayed.

contrmary · 25/01/2021 13:21

When people say they want to be able to say they take risks and feel alive, they usually mean they want to have taken risks and for them to have paid off. Risks often - usually - don't pay off.

If your main thing is wanting to feel "alive" then take your savings and stick them on your favourite number on a roulette wheel. Preferably in a real casino but at the present time it might have to be online. It will tick a lot of your boxes - a crazy thing, potentially a big mistake, you will have an interesting story to tell strangers. Believe me, during the moments between the bet being placed and the ball coming to rest, during the moment when you are dancing between a huge victory and financial ruin, you will feel more alive than ever.

I suspect you won't take my advice. It's one thing to want to feel like you've taken risks and are "alive" but another to actually do it.

For Christ's sake don't do it because some idiot on the internet (me) dared you to.

An0n0n0n · 25/01/2021 13:24

Not meant rudely but once the tv show is over then you'll still be you with your life. It's a really short (but fun!) experience. I think it would be better to build a life that interests you and makes you happy. Of that is excitement likes the tv then go for it. But it won't be exciting for long if you sees what I mean.

Pinkfreesias · 25/01/2021 13:34

It seems to me likely that, after you've been on a telly show, you'd still be searching for that next thing to make you feel alive.

There isn't any quick fix. You need to find things that interest you long term and also to accept your life; be thankful for all the good things you have, not see yourself and your life as boring.

peughpeemy · 25/01/2021 13:50

@Pinkfreesias yes youre probably right.

And I never really thought that there was a possibility of being cast a villain. I wouldn't want to risk that. I just want to do something different and interesting

@Ihopeyourcakeisshit thank you, you are a very kind person

Go for it! I have a friend who specialises in those brainy quizzes like Only Connect, they’ve been on all sorts of them. I think if you do one and come across well - friendly and fun - you will get invitations for others.

LemonLymanDotCom · 25/01/2021 18:29

Just the other day I was watching Tipping Point, and thought the questions really easy and pondering if I should apply. I thought don’t be silly, you’d get all anxious and look like a prat. And now, mere days later I see the casting call on Mumsnet? That’s coincidental.... or maybe FATE!

Bugger it. I’ve just applied. Wish me luck!

AngelDelightUK · 25/01/2021 18:58

Go for it!

I’ve been on Pointless and Tipping Point and the buzz is like nothing else.

I need to apply for the next one really, they are addictive

AngelDelightUK · 25/01/2021 18:59

It’s actually a lot harder than it looks when you’re up there, your mind goes blank!

I say this as someone who was on TP (and won) so got very man-handled by Ben!!

lidoshuffle · 25/01/2021 19:46

Sorry @AngelDelightUK , I didn't mean to be rude to the more sensible people on it and I'm sure it's harder off the sofa. Some of the answers people give are corkers though Grin. And you won, well done!
