The bloody cheek of it! I'm absolutely disgusted!

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9181001/MPs-working-home-lockdown-charge-taxpayers-extra-gas-electricity.html

£9.1m claimed by MPs working largely from home for extra electricity and gas while the rest of the country is on 80% of their wages if not a lot less. I'm absolutely appalled that they earn £80k each and are getting a pay rise and then continue to kick us in the teeth by spending taxpayer money on stupid things. How about using the money to supply teachers with supplies that they need or giving it to the NHS to find appropriate PPE and paying your own bloody bills?!?

AIBU for feeling this way?

Can't bring myself to care about what they do any more. What am I going to do about it?

orangejuicer · 24/01/2021 22:31

80k salary for being an mp is really not a huge amount. Claiming for additional expenses working from home, which would have otherwise been covered by their workplace, is also not unreasonable. I didn't click the link so don't know how much it is. I assume it's more than the standard HMRC rate so the amount could be unreasonable.

Not sure I could get worked up about it sorry.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 24/01/2021 22:33

I dont begrudge them the extra. Being decently paid and conpensated for extra expenses should be the norm in all jobs. I do begrudge that the working conditions and pay of so many others are piss poor and that systems are so rigid theres no room for flexibility when the situation changes.

MrsTerryPratchett · 24/01/2021 22:35

The rest of the country isn't on 80% of their wages. Only those furloughed, who aren't working.

SimplyRadishing · 24/01/2021 22:35

But we get to claim £6 tax relief (lucky us)

Since the infamous duck house expending expose (which btw looked nicer than most places I rented in london in my 20s) I have given up expecting anything much from MPs

Thewithesarehere · 24/01/2021 22:35

It’s quite sickening to see them being compensated for something all of us are expected to live with.
Angry

Justcallmecaptainobvious · 24/01/2021 22:36

They didn’t claim £9.1m on electricity and gas, that’s the entire annual expense budget for all MPs. It covers salaries for a lot of people, would you like them all to be sacked? Also they’re not getting their pay rise.

Yes, it’s shit that people in other areas are struggling. But I strongly suggest you get your news from somewhere other than the daily Mail - their only objective is to make you angry, they don’t care about accuracy.

Whydontpeoplegetit · 24/01/2021 22:37

I just find it so disgusting when they continue to harp on like they can sympathise with our struggles but yet people are managing on a lot less like those who have been made redundant, self-employed and other groups who don't get any financial help. Surely they should make sacrifices too.

Expensing*

Ariela · 24/01/2021 22:39

I'm allowed to claim extra costs for heat/electricity when WFH from the company I work for , so why can't they?
£80K a year for the hassle they get? No thank you, I'll just stick to earning a bit less than half that in my cushy job. Although I wish I had my friend's job in a slightly more glamourous industry than mine and £120K/year for not much more responsibility and certainly nowhere near as many hours or even 1/4 as much responsibility than being an MP.

WorraLiberty · 24/01/2021 22:40

Are the self-employed not getting furlough payments anymore?

My friend is under the impression she'll get a furlough payment soon like she did last time?

Daffy2020 · 24/01/2021 22:42

Can’t believe I’ve came on this thread to see people justifying that. When large numbers of the population have lost jobs, businesses etc. Fuck right off MN

OwlWearingGlasses · 24/01/2021 22:42

Makes my blood boil.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 24/01/2021 22:44

Whenever someone tells e how "dicusting" it is that a footballer earns £20.000 a weeks for kicking a ball about , or an MP gets £80,000 a year just to pop into the House of Commons and sign their name , I think

Well if it is that easy and that money for old rope , there's nought to stop you doing it too.
(Maybe not the football though )

SavoyCabbage · 24/01/2021 22:47

But the rest of the country aren't on 80% of their wages. Most people are still working.

ThatchersCold · 24/01/2021 22:49

@WorraLiberty yes there will be more payments for the SE, I believe the next one is in February.

Theunamedcat · 24/01/2021 22:50

I thought they voted to give themselves a pay rise?

Chloemol · 24/01/2021 22:51

Interesting to see it’s the SNP MPs who have claimed the most!

If you work for home you can claim a tax free allowance of up to £26pm. Not as much obviously but it’s there. If your company won’t pay it phone HMRC and get your tax code changed

Highfivethatfart · 24/01/2021 22:55

Daffy2020 - well said - couldn't agree more.

Unsure33 · 24/01/2021 22:56

Nope don’t begrudge it. Our pm gets paid less than nearly every nhs trust manager and has more responsibility.

If we paid MPs more, we may get more business people apply and not someone like Diane Abbott who does not know basic maths .

FrangipaniBlue · 24/01/2021 22:57

If this is true then it's shocking. I work for a government body and we were told we couldn't claim anything.

IT equipment was provided and if needed a proper office chair but that's it.

Nothing towards extra heat or light or "office costs".

The reason we were told we couldn't claim anything? Because we're a government body and it's taxpayers money.

Umm......

WorraLiberty · 24/01/2021 22:58
@WorraLiberty yes there will be more payments for the SE, I believe the next one is in February.
Ahh thanks.

I'm not sure where you're getting your information from OP?

Whatamesssss · 24/01/2021 22:59

Is this on top of the £10,000 they got for working from home?

Unsure33 · 24/01/2021 23:00

If you are going to compare with a teacher or a nurse they can all apply to be an MP if it’s just about money?

So open to anyone ? Who wants to do it ?

pinkprosseco · 24/01/2021 23:02

I was more shocked at the fact they could get subsidised food whilst voting against free school meals. That's the kind of privilege I would argue they definitely don't deserve.
