To ask whether you fill the freezer with batch cooking and then don't eat it?

Just that. It's embarrassing, and obvs a waste of money and effort :-(

From time to time I'll make stews or risottos or things like that and freeze them in tubs. When it comes to the crunch, though, I look forward to dinner so much during the day that I tend to make a daily plan (which might well be sandwiches, which I love with fresh crunchy bread) and never get round to eating what I've frozen.

Not only is this a waste of money and effort, the freezer then fills up with all this stuff and there's no room for other interesting items like ice cream (though maybe that's a blessing, right?)...

No, we eat ours.
I batch cook so I’ve always got something home cooked to pull out when I’m too tired, or can’t be bothered, to cook.

Ileflottante · 24/01/2021 17:37

Yeah, I eat mine, too.

If you know you’re not going to eat it, why’d you bother?

Ireolu · 24/01/2021 17:40

I don't bother to batch freeze as I know we won't eat it. Left overs go in the fridge and we give ourselves a few days to finish off. We try hard to eat all we make on the day to avoid waste and left overs in the first place.

Terracottasaur · 24/01/2021 17:41

We eat ours too. We have a small baby so it’s a godsend at the moment. I’m running low though!

I would just stop doing it in your case - if you prefer to cook fresh each day then just embrace it. There’s nothing wrong with that if it’s the way you like to cook.

Mylittlepony374 · 24/01/2021 17:43

I've done this. Deliberately made more meatballs or more curry than we will eat thinking I'd freeze and use again. Dogs always get it when I'm clearing out freezer.

AuntyMabelandPippin · 24/01/2021 17:43

I usually cook enough for two meals and freeze the rest. I thought I was quite good at re-using food, till I checked the freezer last week and chucked out a load of old stuff.

I'm going to be keeping a much closer eye on things now. I hate wasting food.

Mylittlepony374 · 24/01/2021 17:44

Now I just focus on only cooking exactly what we need. Avoiding waste.

ParkheadParadise · 24/01/2021 17:45

I'm guilty of this.
I don't batch cook anymore.

TipseyTorvey · 24/01/2021 17:45

I tend to only batch cook really basic things like bolognese, tomato based sauces and cheese sauce so week day meals are really quick, and those are meal planned. If I make something more exciting at the weekend then leftovers go into the fridge at eye height for people to work through in the week. More so now we're all at home.

Twobrews · 24/01/2021 17:46

I've never managed to get my head round it. I tried earnestly when we were skint because it's always seen as a money saving exercise but found it was too expensive.
Now thankfully we're not on a tight budget, I save the odd thing in the freezer for emergencies but it's full of more interesting things.

NataliaOsipova · 24/01/2021 17:47

I’m like this. I have a freezer full to the brim. Once in a while, I accept that it’s just a good graveyard and chuck it all out....😟

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 24/01/2021 17:47

If I cook double, we eat the leftovers the next day.

LetMeOut2021 · 24/01/2021 17:47

Somethings I eat, but others I don’t really enjoy so I don’t get them back out. I try and encourage DH to take the stuff I wasn’t keen on to work for his lunch, I’m really bad at eating for the sake of it - I have to fancy whatever it is.

NataliaOsipova · 24/01/2021 17:47

...a food graveyard, sorry! Not a good one.

DragonPoop · 24/01/2021 17:48

I only batch cook/freeze meals that I know I love and will be excited to eat otherwise I have the same problem. Also I make myself have one day a week where we have to eat something from the freezer.

Toomanycats99 · 24/01/2021 17:49

My batch cooking is used all the time. Probably a bit more for the kids so they can have a proper meal and not tray stuff but still in good time from me finishing work.

XazieRose · 24/01/2021 17:49

We eat it/

museumum · 24/01/2021 17:50

There are very few things I like batch cooked and reheated. Bolognese, pizza sauce, curry. Pretty much everything else is so much better fresh imo so I don’t tend to bother.
I batch cook soup but that doesn’t get frozen.

nancybotwinbloom · 24/01/2021 17:51

Op depending on what you Have, but the herbs that will make it look fab.

Curry - coriander

Etc and put your meal on a nice plate.

Makes it much better.

fairynick · 24/01/2021 17:55

I force myself to eat then but I hate it and idk why. If I cook a curry and love it the night I eat it I’ll freeze the rest. I’ll then look at it in despair when I pick the bag out the freezer and go to reheat it. It just doesn’t seem as appetising second time round. I force myself to freeze leftovers but try not to batch cook because I do find it a slog for some reason.

BlackDogBlues · 24/01/2021 17:55

a leftover portion of spag Bol on a rainy lunchtime is lovely. But I know I wouldn’t fancy a whole spag Bol I’d batch cooked and frozen.

I mainly just use any leftovers up over a couple of days. So I’ve cooked enough lamb tonight to know husband can make stir fry tomorrow.

Schmooopy · 24/01/2021 17:55

We always eat ours, I usually make double of most things that will freeze well (soup, curry, chili, bolognese, stew, mash, lasagna, mac and cheese). I love the smug feeling of getting something out of the freezer that would take ages to make from scratch but now just needs reheating. Tonight we are having fish pie that I made a few weeks ago.

BlackDogBlues · 24/01/2021 17:56

And the freezer is mostly full of home grown black currants, escaped peas and oven chips.

FolkyFoxFace · 24/01/2021 17:58

We eat it. Soups, stews, Bolognese, chilli, curry, etc. Some months I'll make a load of veggie burgers or sausages. We also chop and freeze peppers, or part cook some carrots, etc.

Maybe rather than cooking loads of things you might not eat, go for a plain base sauce? Just a tomato one or something that you can add other bits to, different herbs and spices, etc. Part cooking veg is also really good for this, because then you don't have to start chopping if you're not in the mood!

OverTheRainbow88 · 24/01/2021 18:00

We cook for ourselves and eat it that eve then batch freeze smaller portions for kids to eat another time - which they do. Occasionally they won’t like it so I defrost all the little pots and eat it myself for lunch.

I hate wasting food!!
