Houseshares have to be better than this, right?

Does anybody live in a semi-decent houseshare?

Since October I've lived here to save money due to having some debts to pay etc.
Finally getting into a better financial position now and working 2 jobs. I'm on a good wage now and could afford to rent my own place, but I would like to buy a place and don't want to keep flitting between places so I am a bit torn.

Anyway the house.. it's totally my fault for moving here, it was cheap, no deposit, flexible contract etc.

I viewed it virtually due to covid and also as I was abroad.
I pay £375 per month for a room including all bills.
For starters somebody has engraved something phallic into our front door and the landlord hasn't bothered to do anything about it.
We had a cleaner who wasn't exactly the most competent but she hasn't been since before Christmas. The agency have ignored the several messages I've sent to ask when and if she's returning.

There was a huge hole/leak in the ceiling when I moved in, which I was told would be getting fixed. It was finally done so last week, after 4 months here.

1 oven and limited cupboard space for 6 people. I have 1 shelf in the fridge but people still dump their stuff onto it.

Toilet is sometimes left pretty dirty. People also don't use air freshener so sometimes when you walk past the loos which you have to to get to the kitchen you get vile odours. Live with 5 men and one urinates without closing the door.

My room is right next to somebody else's so I previously had a couple having loud sex at 3am, now I have somebody who sounds like he's throwing things against the wall every time he opens his wardrobe etc.. I'm sure it's not him, just the walls are paper thin. The night he moved in I didn't know anybody had, heard a huge bang from the initially empty room from next door and thought something had collapsed in there.

The whole house just smells bad. The internet is dire despite me reporting it, when I moved in my drawers were broken and I couldn't actually close my window as a tree had grown over it. I had to cut away at the tree to be able to close it.

The street is filled with litter. I honestly think I've chosen the worst street in the town. All in all it's a depressing place to live and doesn't feel like home.

The landlord clearly doesn't want to spend a penny on the house and it shows.

I have a house deposit, a 15-20% one at that but atm my credit rating isn't high enough, though it's going up.

Not sure what to do, it could be 6 months or more before I can get a mortgage. Don't want to move again then move yet again.

Any advice welcomed.

“I had a little studio until September but almost 600 per month and I had to leave due to my debts.”

OP that’s the issue there’s no point having a “deposit” with a ton of debt.

You need to move. I promise you there is better out there, and it’s extremely unlikely you’re going to be buying a house anytime soon. Lending at the moment is more difficult than it was for people with excellent credit history, and is likely to stay same for some time. Any defaults or late payments are on your file for six years.

You need to pay your debts with the savings you have wait for your bad credit to become historic, and then worry about deposit later. What matters now is getting yourself out a place that’s making you unhappy.

Thanks so much everyone for the replies, going to get a mortgage broker appointment when I can and look on spare room. With the new job I have I can be debt free in around 6 months too hopefully which is great.
Also should have mentioned it's 2 bathrooms for 6 people sorry.

Good news, got an en suite room in a much nicer house for an extra £70 per month !

Sounds like £70 well spent especially as you may have to stay a while before getting a mortgage improved. Hang on in there it will be worth it!

Good that you found somewhere better...but why don't you use your deposit to pay off your debt immediately? Then you are 6 months closer to a good enough credit score. It makes no sense to have a debt if you can afford to pay it off.

Grim. Lifes too short. Get a studio in a house converted into only one or two ( otherwise you have noise issues). Make sure other residents work as even in nice areas where I am some flats & studios are lived in by dealers who have 'visitors' up to 4am. I had nice houseshares but I'm a homebody & need quiet, so a studio in a house with just two other studios was bliss. Lovely ,huge studio, Victorian house, quiet, safe street. Never regretted it.

I'm so pleased for you!

There are plenty on spare room, just find a nicer one. You could specifically look for one with only one other housemate so there aren't as many sharing the kitchen and toilet, or search for an en suite. No way would I stay there.

Great news - hope the move to new place goes smoothly

Priorities
-When you move tell bank, electoral register, DVLC, phone, catalogues etc. new address & do post redirection so that any of your previous “housemates” can’t run up debt in your name.

  • leave room in as good a state as possible to get as much deposit back as you can. Bastard landlords who don’t do timely repairs are the type to think the deposit is theirs to keep.
-Sort out debts to improve credit rating. -Get a credit card, use it for small purchases and pay off each month to improve credit rating. -Put savings in as high an interest account as you can ( rates are low at the moment) make sure savings guaranteed if bank fails. -Remember when you buy a property you have to pay for legal fees/surveys/mortgage arrangement fees etc. so put by some savings for these.
