To prefer watching films that have been adapted from books?

Lighthearted debate with DP about films.

He said he’s noticed that I always want to watch film adaptations of books, or films that are remakes of old films, and I realised he’s right. I very much prefer this to films that are just films if you see what I mean. I like knowing what is going to happen and I enjoy seeing how the filmmakers have interpreted the storyline and characters. If a new film adaption is coming out that I’d like to see, I’ll sometimes read the book before watching it.
DP thinks this is really weird and that it’s far more exciting when you have no idea what is going to happen, and he thinks that there’s way too much risk of disappointment when it’s been adapted from a book or is a remake.

What do you think? What’s your preference?

YABU: watching a film adaption is nowhere near as good as watching a normal film
YANBU: film adaptations are better!

Have no idea why I’ve used ‘adaptation’ in some cases and ‘adaption’ (is this even a word?!) in others but you get what I mean Grin

I can see both sides, but I definitely know what you mean about enjoying seeing how they treat a story you already know. It's like going to the theatre when you know the play but you want to see this production.

I also like having a good moan about what they did wrong. Grin

Just like me - I love to hate some film adaptations if I’m honest Grin Shouting ‘that’s not what happens in the book!’ every ten minutes Grin

Depends on the adaptation. Some are great, some are God awful or bare absolutely no resemblance to the source material.(Stephen King I'm looking at you here)

But original stuff can be brilliant. But with adaptations, you at least have a vague guess as to what you're going to get.

I generally do enjoy film adaptations too. I get great satisfaction from seeing a familiar, really good story done very well (Emma 2020) Also enjoy a good rant about the bad ones Grin

I am drawn to watching adaptations but always find them disappointing. Particularly when they muck about with the ending.

I generally prefer film adaptations of books simply because the story is usually a lot better than written-straight-for-the-screen movies.
I however HATED the adaptation of The Lovely Bones. The book was raw and beautiful. The film was a CGI shitshow with no heart.
