Council tax

spidermomma · 23/01/2021 19:04

So my council tax has always been deducted for having a disabled child, I mow have 2 that are really poorly. I recently got dla for 1 of my children

For the last 8 months my council tax has gone from "been fully paid" to owing £7,200, 80,150. Even owed euros at one point. It's never made sense and changes sometimes twice a month and they've never said why it changes all the time as my circumstances never have. But they say they have ? They really havnt though!
I got a letter yesterday saying I now owe 400 in the next 2 months ?!?!!
AIBU to think their taking the piss ? They've said the dla is an extra income so I owe 400 by March ? Iv only had 1 payment of it as it is an I just about get half of that and I'm sure it's ment for the child's benefit not the council? We was going to use it to save for a little car to get them to and from hospital every week. Really annoyed at this! I spent half of that in travel expenses getting to and from hospital in the past 4 weeks. Was their 3 times last weekend and it's not our local hospital it's in a totally different city to us a good hour away.
Can they actually do this ? Xx

You have had a council tax bill that says that you owe Euros?

spidermomma · 23/01/2021 19:13

Just to add. Before I applied for a deduction I was paying 130 a month for 5 months and they first said I owed £7 and it was paid off, then I owed different amounts every month after. Was usually 25-50 a month. So now it's shot up to 400 in 2 months ?

OP posts:
spidermomma · 23/01/2021 19:13

@Motnight yea they said I owed them like 160 euros in October

This letter sounds like a scam

Have you looked at your council phone number on the internet & spoken to someone

Any phone number on this letter could be a scam ?

ElizaLaLa · 23/01/2021 20:52

Besides the point, but apply for a motability car.

dancemom · 23/01/2021 20:56

Do you receive Universal Credit?

Royalbloo · 23/01/2021 21:18

I'd consult the citizens advice bureau as you can speak to them and they will clear up what is fact and what is fiction (or fraud) x

Royalbloo · 23/01/2021 21:18

They are also handling email enquiries

spidermomma · 23/01/2021 21:19

@WhatWhwreWhy3 Iv rang the council hemselves and they say it's them and they keep reviewing my circumstances and their correct
@ElizaLaLa Iv applied for one but it's wrong they give you money for the children to help make their lives easier and someone someday finds a way to take it back? Annoying
@dancemom I am on UC yes

OP posts:
dancemom · 23/01/2021 21:21

When you are on UC your entitlement to Council Tax Reduction gets assessed every month when your UC payment is made. So your payments could change every month.

Check your Council Tax Reduction award letter to make sure they are using the correct figure of UC in your assessment.

spidermomma · 23/01/2021 21:21

@Royalbloo my mum said she is going to ring Monday as they keep taking me for a joke I feel and I don't have time to sit for an hour on the phone atm with the children :( their awful. I wish they would sort the flood on my front so I can acces my house as quick as they find my 230 extra pounds a month in my bank. X

OP posts:
spidermomma · 23/01/2021 21:23

They don't add my UC breakdown but the figure on that hasn't changed since I started to claim this deduction and iv said this to them. Just last month I got the extra dla x

OP posts:
spidermomma · 23/01/2021 21:24

But the dla doesn't effect my universal credit it's just for the kids isn't it ?

OP posts:
GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 23/01/2021 21:26

£7,200, 80,150

What number is this? How much does it say you owe?

BarbaraofSeville · 23/01/2021 21:28

Sounds like a mistake. Seven or eight thousand pounds would be at least two or three years of council tax in the most expensive property in the most expensive council and letters in euros are just bizarre. Assuming that you are in the UK of course.

Try not to worry and don't send them any money above what you normally do, until you have checked that the information is correct and not a scam.

spidermomma · 23/01/2021 21:43

@BarbaraofSeville @GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat sorry this is my awful and lazy post lol I ment £7,£200,£80 etc
My current one says £400 due by March it is my local council they've said it's them and it's from their review. The reason I owe 400 this month compared to the 75 last month Is because I get dla for 1 of my children now ?

OP posts:
blobblob · 23/01/2021 21:47

Citizens Advice are good at this sort of thing. They will help. Call your local office

Theunamedcat · 23/01/2021 21:50

I get dla no one has ever said anything about it effecting my council tax?

spidermomma · 23/01/2021 21:55

@blobblob I'm going to ring Monday it doesn't seem right at all or fair
@Theunamedcat really? They've said because I get it they basically want it , they put it in the letter the sent to explain why they made the choice that I get £356 universal credit for myself and my oh and then 500 for the children then we get dla for 1 child so the £238 I get a month in dla means I have that as a spare income and this is why I owe £400 now. Disregarding the money they've already had from myself over the past year

OP posts:
LoudBatPerson · 23/01/2021 22:06

I believe (but haven't claimed UC or council tax reduction myself so I could be wrong) that the DLA itself isn't taking into account when calculating the reduction. However you will be getting an extra premium included in your UC due to a child receiving DLA, and that will be counted as income when calculating council tax reduction.

lazymum99 · 23/01/2021 22:20

Citizens Advice will get to the bottom of this. They are doing phone advice and if you scan and email them all the documents and give them authorisation to act they can help you sort it

spidermomma · 23/01/2021 22:57

No you don't get anything for a child who gets dla. You have to claim carers allowance and then they take that off you then give you £100 pound ? If that makes sence. That's the break down. Not because you get dla it's just because you care for the disabled child

OP posts:
ikeptgoing · 23/01/2021 23:12

Council tax is calculated on adults.
You may get council tax credit - you and your partner - for being in low wage
It is nothing to do with DLA or the newer replacement PiP for your children or you as that is a disability job means tested benefit,

We can't help you OP as your posts are confused. Go to CAB OP. Abs let them work out what you owe and are actually liable for

LoudBatPerson · 24/01/2021 00:10

There is an extra element paid as part of universal credit when a child receives DLA (and a seperate carers element too if you meet certain criteria).

I think you should approach citizens advice, they will be able to go through a breakdown of all elements with you.

The DLA itself is not what has changed the council tax reduction, it is the extra UC elements the DLA has triggered.

Sh05 · 24/01/2021 00:21

Citizens advice is the first and best place to start op but please also calculate how much council tax you have already paid this year since April. Some councils are great at overcharging but crap at repaying any over payments.
When you call CAB make sure you have a record of payments made with dates included.
