To be crying over a uni assignment?

I feel so fucking stupid .

I took two long years out of uni due to health issues . All that time I didn’t think I’d ever have a chance of returning and so didn’t look at my uni stuff once .

October made the choice I’d go back, but it was after Christmas before it was all confirmed .

I’m two weeks in now .

Have been given an assignment with about a week’s notice to complete . The assignment is based on work class have done for the last six months . They’re doing it in groups - I’m doing it myself .

It’s work I did in 2018 and don’t really remember all that well .

I could sit and cry, I don’t understand the assignment and feel so bloody stupid . I don’t know what to do to make myself understand it, I’ve gone through the lecture slides, watched YouTube videos , read textbook, and still confused !

AIBU to feel so bloody frustrated? I don’t want to fail but dint want to email the lecturer and say I don’t understand either , because that’s just as bad surely !

I've cried over uni assignments before, had a little cry yesterday about statistics
I did a statistics dissertation summer 2020, I alternated between working, crying and eating chocolate to get through it

If you didn’t cry over at least one of your modules.... have you Even DONE a degree?

Im being flippant, but seriously please contact the tutor. Stressing over stuff is normal, but you can’t magic up,the ability to do something. You do,have to ask.

I'm a university lecturer. Email your lecturer - if you were my student ID really want to know, and set out a plan to help you succeed.

See if you can arrange a Zoom call perhaps, or at least a phonecall where you can go over everything you're struggling with. Lay it all out in your first email, too, and let them know how stressed you are.

You'll be fine! Flowers

The biggest mistake students make is not reaching out if they are struggling. Tell them. Ask for an extension if appropriate. No one can support you if you don't tell them you need support.

First year student here 🙋🏼‍♀️

I’ve had to email my tutor already over an assignment. I wanted to give it up. I just didn’t get it.

They were really helpful. Honestly reach out for some support.

Absolutely this. When we’re sitting in a marking meeting with the external going through all grades at the end of the year, there’s a pretty much exact correlation between the people who don’t pass the year and the people module and personal tutors have pursued by email, phone and letter to try and get them to engage. The absolute best thing you can do when you’re struggling is to make sure to contact and explain what’s going on to both the lecturer for that module and your personal tutor. Teaching staff genuinely want to help.

I’m back in uni after an 18 month break, had a 30 min chat with my supervisor which absolutely helped me get back on track - that’s what the teaching staff are there for.

NotMeekNotObedient · 23/01/2021 18:01

Just email your tutor what's the problem? That's what they are there for.

midgebabe · 23/01/2021 18:05

Everyone struggles with something. Sometimes just writing down what you can helps, so when you get to talk to your tutor they will see exactly what your problem is.

StudentProblems · 23/01/2021 18:15

I’m a lecturer. Please just email yours! It isn’t me though I promise Wink

Your university should have some sort of Covid-related no detriment policy in place which allows students to defer their assessments without penalty (ie grade won't be capped). I work at a uni and we have loads of students who are unable to complete assignments at present. Our next exam board will automatically defer them to submit during the summer resit period so they can complete the work in July/August and progress into the next year of study. Speak to your personal tutor. If you don't know who that is, ask your course admin; they are a fount of information. There's no need to go running to the student union about this (unless it isn't resolved) - they'd probably just refer you back to the relevant people in your school/faculty anyway.

Another person saying to chat to your tutor Smile Mine was very supportive when I went back after maternity leave and felt like I'd forgotten half the course.

I feel like sales of "Psychology Statistics for Dummies" have rocketed purely due to the people on my course.
