Has anyone had a baby with hip dysplasia?

TheBuffster · 23/01/2021 12:05

Google has not really helped. My baby has suspected cp, but I feel this needs to be ruled out as well. Does anyone have experience of hip dysplasia- how did you know? When did you know? (he's 10 months)
Thanks

My cousin was born with hip dysplasia and had a frame from birth. Can't remember how long it was in for. Her child also had hip dysplasia but, because of other far more serious problems, didn't have anything done until 2 years old (surgery).

Calmandmeasured1 · 23/01/2021 12:09

Btw, the other issues her child has doesn't include cp.

HugeAckmansWife · 23/01/2021 12:10

A friend of mines dd did. She was in a cast for some months as I recall and various other things. Then yearly checks at GOSH but now at 12 has been signed off. I don't have more details but ultimately a good outcome

Dancingmeldew · 23/01/2021 12:51

I was born with hip dysplasia. I have had several operations. But can't remember exactly what was done or when. But I know I had an operation to put some wire around the hip when I was very young, nursery age. I also had metal plates put in at some point. I spent around 6 weeks in hospital at some point. But in a cast for much longer. Later the plates were removed. I had some sort of operation at primary school. I can't remember what that was.

At around 14 I think I had a check up and that was last time I had to go back. At around 19 I started getting pains in my hip. Which was arthritis. They wont do any more operations until I am much older and need a hip replacement. Because my hip is already so worn.

TheBuffster · 23/01/2021 12:56

Does anyone know the symptoms? He's been checked but feel like they could have missed it.

Have you looked at the Steps website here

It is very informative and has support groups etc

TheBuffster · 23/01/2021 13:16

Thanks for that. There's definitely something up but doesn't quite fit. The reason I asked is because the physio mentioned it could be a problem but I was confused because am sure the pediatrician checked him. Don't know if anyone discovered their baby had problems after the 8 week check.

AnyFucker · 23/01/2021 13:19

Has the physio suggested a plan of action ? Referred your baby onwards, eg. back to the GP or paediatrician for an Xray.

TheBuffster · 23/01/2021 13:32

No, due to covid we've had to measure legs, check bum indents etc ourselves.
He had an MRI a few weeks ago so it might be brought up again then.
It's a horrible time just in general to have a baby with suspected cp+. No physio, no support, just occasional telephone calls.
Although I don't know how much is covid related and how much is just general disabled people get crap support.
I always knew disabled people were forgotten by our government but never realised how much until it happened to us 😥

My daughter was born with bilateral hip dislocation amongst various other things.

She spent nearly 6 months in a pavlik harness, however I believe they only work if diagnosed in the first few weeks of life.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 23/01/2021 13:37

My DD had hip dysplasia and it was only diagnosed just before her second birthday which, unfortunately, meant she had to ha e two ops to correct it.

So she had a few signs previously, noted by the health visitor, but not acted upon. Hmm

She had an extra crease in one thigh.
One leg wouldn't open as wide as other
She bum shuffled
She didn't put weight on her dislocated side for a long time
She walked at 17 months
She had a funny gait when she walked
She fell over a lot
She had one leg shorter than the other

Daisyxchain · 23/01/2021 13:39

Yes my dd is now 5 and had it. I also had it. She was treated with a a pavlik harness and scans and x-rays. All is fine now. X

Sexnotgender · 23/01/2021 13:41

Can I add that hip dysplasia is much more common in girls, something like a 7:1 ratio apparently so he’s less likely to have it as a boy.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 23/01/2021 13:42

Re: when did we know.

My mum noticed the non weight bearing at 12 months
The crease was noticed at 6 months
I started to notice leg length issues and lack of movement etc from 18 months and it took several trips to the GP to get a referral.

Empressofthemundane · 23/01/2021 13:44

My youngest had hip dysplasia. It was caught very early. It wasn’t caught when she was newborn, the test where they rotate the hips and listen for a clunk missed it. Everytime I tried to put her in a cloth baby carrier that would splay her legs, she would scream. I was able to push a midwife to check again at about 5 weeks and she managed to get one clunk when manipulating the hips. It was not clear but they sent us for a scan and it was clear that her hip sockets were shallow. She wore a Pavlov harness for about a month and that was enough! We were very lucky. The smaller they are the more quickly they are growing so the more likely harnesses and casts will work.

I cried, but she was pre-crawling and it didn’t seem to trouble her much. She also wore it for a. Wry short time.

The key is to diagnose and trate early while them baby is still growing quickly.

Apologies for the typos! Blush

TheBuffster · 23/01/2021 13:48

@HavfrueDenizKisi any stiffness on the affected side?

OP posts:
MrsDev1980 · 23/01/2021 13:49

My daughter had it and it was first found at her 6 week check. She was then referred on but at no great speed, and we tried an elasticated brace on her. This didn't work because it was too last on to work by then. She then had to have an operation to put her in a frog cast from her tummy to ankles which she was in for 3 months before another op to put her in a bigger one as she had grown. After another 3 months she had her final op and was in a cast that allowed her to sit up which was better. She was cast free by about 15 months old. She had 6 monthly checks ups until she was 10.and everything was fine. She is now 14 and is down to yearly checks.
One of the signs is an extra crease in the skin below the bum, so both sides don't match. They may also start limping once walking. The doctors find it by manipulating the legs and finding that they don't have full movement in them

MrsDev1980 · 23/01/2021 13:51

I think you would find stiffness at the hip joint on the affected side as the hip socket is shallow and the ball can't rotate properly in it

NerosFiddle · 23/01/2021 13:52

I had it and my ds did too. It was caught very early in my ds (a couple of weeks old) because of my history. He was in a Palvik harness for 4 months.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 23/01/2021 13:53

Stiffness as in she couldn't move her 'bad' leg out as wide as her good leg. Of we put her on her back and lifted her legs so they were in a frog position her left leg wouldn't open as much as her right leg (obviously as it wasn't in her hip socket!). But no other issues moving forward and backwards that would have been noticeable and no complaints from her re discomfort or pain.

pinkcortina · 23/01/2021 13:54

My daughter was recruited into a trial (90's) after her 6 week check showed a problem with her hips. I used cloth nappies and used an ergonomical sling for 9 months and the scans and X-rays showed the mild issue had been resolved. As an adult she does have occasional pain in her hips but she is super fit and active so it doesn't slow her down. My boys after her had their hips scanned due to her history and all was fine but i still used cloth and the non crotch dangling slings.
My female cousin had complete dislocation at birth and had surgery, casts and splints and is perfectly fine now as an adult. Two ends of the spectrum in one family!

Tobebythesea · 23/01/2021 14:04

My DS had suspected hip dysplasia and he had a scan at 10 weeks. It was found that he didn’t.

There are some good support groups on FB and I know M and S produce some specific clothing.

Tobebythesea · 23/01/2021 14:07

They suspected it due to an extra skin crease in his thighs.

TheBuffster · 23/01/2021 16:11

Hmmm I am not sure then. I just find it strange that the physio suggested it but the pediatrician disregarded it.

He more tenses it up and down if that makes sense. Which sounds more like a cp thing to me. I don't know what to think.
