So, there is a short story which starts
"Peter and his dad went to the beach together...."

Then a series of questions at the end, the first of which starts
"who did dad go to the beach with?"

I tentatively suggested (when asked for help) that it could be Peter. But apparently it can't possibly be that and I am foolish for suggesting it. Over half an hour spent discussing it together as a family. I don't know what the other questions are because we have not yet got that far.
So... Who do you think Dad went to the beach with?

OP posts:
RedskyBynight · 22/01/2021 14:54

Ah! I have the answer OP.

Dad clearly did not go to the beach at all because making sandcastles and lying in the sun is not an appropriate reason to leave the house under Coronavirus guidelines. And if he didn't go to the beach, then he absolutely couldn't have gone with anyone else.
And that's his story and he is sticking to it, Your Honour.

lottiegarbanzo · 22/01/2021 14:57

Ohhh yeahh. 'Who did the dad in the story go to the beach with?' Even 'Who did Peter's dad go to the beach with?'

bluecheesefan · 22/01/2021 15:06

How far along with maths is he?

If he can understand 1+2= 3, then hopefully he will understand that 2+1 also equals 3.

It doesn't matter which order you put them in, the answer is the same.

Peter + Dad went to the beach, therefore Dad+ Peter also went to the beach. Maybe if you explain it like that, he will 'get' it.
Smile

CheepAsChips · 22/01/2021 15:07

Its simple - Dad went with Birdie Friend, who told Peter.

CryingHelps · 22/01/2021 15:09

Well he's obviously thinking of his own Dad so the answer is 'I don't know' or 'insert family names/dog'.
Let me be the first to ask if he has ASD Grin. Wink.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 22/01/2021 15:10

What beach?

Was it within 10 miles of their address?

Paddingtonthebear · 22/01/2021 15:14

Confused why on earth would he think that it isn’t Peter? Can he explain that?

GrolliffetheDragon · 22/01/2021 15:14

Is it too early to drink gin?

If homeschooling? God no.

Is it a Ladybird book? If so, Jane probably went as well. Mummy stayed at home doing housework.

Hah. Though right now I'd choose that option if it meant a few hours on my own. Half arsed job on the housework, then do something I actually want to do (which wouldn't involve gin - or wine)

LizFlowers · 22/01/2021 15:20

With whom did dad go to the beach.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 22/01/2021 15:22

I've not read the thread but is it one of those ridiculous facebook trick questions?

If it says "who did Dad go to the beach with" instead of "who did Peter's Dad go to the beach with" then maybe it's not specifically meaning Peter's Dad...if that makes sense? They could be meaning someone else's Dad. However my first answer would have been Peter.

But yeah, I'm thinking its possibly it's one of these daft questions where they word things in a really convoluted way to try and trick you. In fact half the time the answer you given is right but they add some weird skewed interpretation on....if the question is one of those daft ones that go around on facebook.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 22/01/2021 15:22

And why did I just waste 3 mins entertaining it? 😔😂

52andblue · 22/01/2021 15:22

Maybe with Biff Chip or Kipper ?? (grinds teeth in memory of them).

OP, I feel your pain.
I have a Y9 who won't listen to Mr Heggarty: 'his voice is annoying'.
But she doesn't know how to do the maths problem.
She won't ask me (the very idea!) or listen to me.
She won't Google it (that's cheating)
Or look at a textbook.
She doesn't like Mr M.
But she can't do it herself.
And around we go.

Her brother Y11 is the same.

Both ARE ASD.
It's a nightmare.

Jux · 22/01/2021 15:23

Find out whose dad your 6yo thinks is in the question; that's the first step. I remember deliberately doing this, usually at the instigation of my big brother who enjoyed watching mum explode! Mean kids we could be!

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 22/01/2021 15:24

Oh and I forgot to actually add the most important bit - my answer - after all that rambling! Who did dad go to the beach with. The (trick) answer is his son? Maybe? 😂

ChippyChickenChips · 22/01/2021 15:24

I remember 'comprehension' exercises when I was a child, and thinking most of the questions must be 'trick questions' because the answers were so blazingly obvious. Maybe this is the case here.

VetiverAndLavender · 22/01/2021 15:25

This is giving me a headache. You have my sympathy.

mylovelydd · 22/01/2021 15:26

Presumably then Peter IS Dad and he went to the beach with HIS Dad therefore the answer is Granddad

BoobsOnTheMoon · 22/01/2021 15:26

Oh god this brings back memories of trying to teach a 6 yr old DD to tell the time 😣🙄🤣

"So the little hand is on the four, and the big hand is on the twelve, and that means it's something o'clock. Now there's the little hand on the four, and the big hand on the twelve, so it's....?"

"Four past twelve? No, twelve past four? Oh this is a stupid clock mummy, GET A BETTER ONE"

ShakespearesSisters · 22/01/2021 15:28

Same issues with my just gone 7 year old. Will not back down if they get it wrong, even if they know they were wrong they go out of their way to prove their answer is correct. So stubborn. Driving me bonkers.

BoobsOnTheMoon · 22/01/2021 15:29

PS I think at 6, the concept that Peter went to the beach with dad, ergo dad went to the beach with Peter, is still pretty hazy. After all, there is no sentence that explicitly tells the reader that "dad went to the beach with Peter".

CryingHelps · 22/01/2021 15:29

52andblue - I can relate, my son has ASD - takes thing literally so would think it's his Dad they were asking about - also had issues processing stories - would get events in the wrong order. Such fun Smile

PussyCatInChristmasStockings · 22/01/2021 15:31
Gin Good luck OP
Welikebeingcosy · 22/01/2021 15:31

This is so cute. As a FTM I can't wait for my 19 month old to be this age.

ravenmum · 22/01/2021 15:33

What language is it? Is it your native language?

52andblue · 22/01/2021 15:35

@CryingHelps both my kids have ASD and dyslexia. So does my exH.
(bangs head off floor re 'School work at home')
I remember trying to play travel hangman on a long train journey.
The people across from us faces were a picture!
