Stunning, smart, clever, talented, poised and now famous...all at 22!

Not sure I have a favourite line as I was mesmerised by it all and her little gestures - my face was close to the computer screen watching and soaking in her poem/spoken word and beauty - the face, the yellow coat, the hair. Beauty!

I'm with you OP, MAJOR girl crush! She was fabulous 👏🏻

hennybeans · 21/01/2021 23:29

She has said she plans on running for president in 2036! I can believe it. So eloquent.

ImALucy · 21/01/2021 23:34

Yup, me too. Someone sent me a link to the youtube vid and I was groaning inwardly at the thought of watching poetry, but forced myself to give it a whirl. She was captivating. I was in tears. It gives me hope for America and the world.

dudsville · 21/01/2021 23:42

I'm echoing you all, minus one, I was hanging on every word and gesture. Stunning.

StarAmandaGorman · 21/01/2021 23:44

I was touched by that line where she says she's dreaming of becoming president, then to find herself reciting for one.
Seems like just the beginning for her. Hope she makes it to that top!

I’ve just spent an hour watching videos of her performing on YouTube, she’s so bloody funny! I missed the name of the poem but there’s one where she’s recalling an audition she had for the Lion King, you need to watch it. She only overcame her speech impediment in the last few years as well which makes the inauguration even more amazing.

StarAmandaGorman · 22/01/2021 06:27

Oh thanks @icebearforpresident Will definitely take a look at the video and others.

The poem is called 'The hill we climb'. Her books have topped bestselling list within hours after her poem. Wonderful 👏

I didn't watch it but Lady Gaga definitely missed that first high note.

StarAmandaGorman · 22/01/2021 06:39

She looked rather nervous, didn't she? What with the faff of trying to manage her large upside down rose dress. Must have added to the discomfort. Should have worn something simpler so she'd focus on the performance. Liked her hairstyle though.

Amanda Gorman was outstanding at the inauguration! What an incredible young woman - definitely one to watch.

Shosha1 · 22/01/2021 06:49

Was so impressed with Amanda. Flawless, graceful recital. All children should be given the opportunity to watch it.

AgentProvocateur · 22/01/2021 07:00

This, for me, was the high point in what was already a great day. Her delivery and eloquence were phenomenal, and what a poem!

And to the previous poster who got “bored” because she “went on a bit”...Hmm

derxa · 22/01/2021 07:09

What's a 'speech impediment'?

Lookingforwardto2021 · 22/01/2021 07:33

I really liked her too and got goose bumps during two bits.

When she said something along the lines of
“As we grieved we grew”

And “as we look towards the future, history has its eyes on us”

A poem so suited to the moment and delivered with such confidence

@StarAmandaGorman, and thank you for creating this thread

GADDay · 22/01/2021 07:47

She made me cry. Her poem is so hopeful and beautiful.

StarAmandaGorman · 22/01/2021 07:47

@derxa There are different types or symptoms of speech impediment or speech disorder. I googled this one specifically about hers.
What has Amanda Gorman said about her Speech Impediment

She also has auditory processing disorder.

I'm a former speech and language therapist. 'Speech impediment' is a term from the Ark.

StarAmandaGorman · 22/01/2021 07:57

Ok. Feel free to tell everyone else that - I didn't come up with it.

Anyway...

I used the term speech impediment after hearing her use it herself in an interview I watched - apologies if it’s not used anymore.

Serious question, what is the correct term?

Well how long have you got? Speech and language disorders/difficulties are many and varied with many different causes. She might have had a phonological disorder or an articulation/speech production difficulty. I don't know. She said she found producing the /r/ sound difficult. One of the last sounds to be acquired by children.
My problem with all of this is that is equated with Biden's stammer. A completely different problem
hedgehogger1 · 22/01/2021 11:24

Not seen the performance but I've read the poem. Thought it was brilliant

In Amanda Gorman's own words
www.huffpost.com/entry/poetrys-relevance-to-yout_b_6000384

"As a teen myself, I’ve witnessed first-hand the life-changing and fulfilling effects of poetry. Not too long ago, I mounted the stage to read my poetry at a writing workshop, thinking anxiously to myself: Why did I ever volunteer to read my work in front of all these people?! More than being nervous about the quality of my poem, I felt anxious about what my voice would sound like. At the time, I was 14, and still suffering from a speech impediment that had affected me since I began talking. Would the audience understand me? Would they, like most people, wonder what foreign, exotic country I came from, and I would have to tell them that my accent wasn’t an accent at all, but a disability? I clutched my journal tighter in my sweat drenched palms and prayed my clumsiness wouldn’t emerge that instant, causing me to trip on my two left feet. As I stood, I experienced a sudden gratitude for the blinding lights. I couldn’t see everyone’s faces! That made things much easier. I opened my book and began to read."

StarAmandaGorman · 22/01/2021 18:51

I watched the Lion King video @icebearforpresident recommended and it was very obvious to me she spoke 'differently' there. At first I wondered why she was speaking that way, then I remembered she has/had a speech impediment. She actually mentioned it there too.
