Water - filtered or tap?

AIBU to use a filter instead of drinking directly from the tap?
YABU - Tap water is perfectly fine
YANBU - Filtered is better

I live in an area with soft water (north west) and no artificial or natural fluoride in the water. I used to live in an area with very hard water (near London) but never got round to buying a filter system or even a filter jug.

Anyone with experience in this, is it worth getting a filter? Yes I’ve googled lots but I just can’t seem to decide.

Also, the main question is, if you recommend a filter, which brand is best and what kind of filter system/jug do you recommend?

Thanks!

I wish I still had North West tap water. I can possibly understand using one if you live in some areas of the SE, but in a soft water area, what's the point?

I agree that there's no need for a water filter if you are in an area with nice, soft tap water.

If you want chilled water, just keep a jug in the fridge, although at this time of year, it comes out of the tap nicely chilled.

Our water is also very soft and every time I visit somewhere with hard water, I am reminded as to how nice our own water is and how horrible hard water is. Tastes awful, makes awful tea, ruins appliances and needs more chemicals when washing and cleaning.

We live on South Coast, tap water here is awful, we had a filter jug, initially now we have a Brita Filter tap, the cartridges are expensive but the water tastes much better. Our water from the tap is very hard.

If the water from the tap tastes fine then why faff about with a filter?

RolandSchitt · 21/01/2021 08:16

I'm in Scotland and have nice tap water too, so a filter feels unnecessary. As a PP suggested, I sometimes keep a jug in the fridge, not needed right now as it's really cold right out of the tap.

Up to you of course, there's nothing unreasonable about wanting a filter on soft water!

I live in Yorkshire and our water is pretty good but I use a Brita filter jug. I don't drink tea or coffee so I drink plain water most of the time.

I live in reservoir country in Yorkshire. Our water doesn't need filtering. We just drink it straight from the tap.

Another Yorkshire girl here who drinks directly from the tap. I always forget how lucky we are until I go somewhere else and the water is horrid. Some places even give me a sore mouth.
Definitely needed a filter when I lived in Cardiff as a student. I would have happily gone without food to pay for it.

I live in the SE and our tap water tastes vile. (DC are adamant it doesn't taste of anything, but it really does). I've got a brita jug filter in the fridge for if I'm drinking plain water. I don't bother with the filter for tea/coffee or squash, unless I want it extra cold.

Grew up in East London and the tap water was lovely.
Where I live now east anglia it's vile. Even boiling it makes no difference. Tastes like it's got tcp in it.
