Toddler losing front teeth

My son is 18 month old. He has a lip tie which was diagnosed too late and caused decay on his upper front four teeth. He had one upper front tooth extracted (fell and injured badly) and another one will probably need to go to. Looks like he will be without his front four teeth for a very long time. I have not slept well since Sunday. He has teething pain too from his molars coming in, and has suddenly stopped breastfeeding (since his fall). I keep hearing that kids who lose their front baby teeth have speech issues and their Jaw formation is bad and the adult teeth don't come in straight :'(

My child lost both front teeth at 2.5 years after a nasty fall. The dentist kept putting it down to bruising but I knew it was fractured as they couldn't eat or drink properly and would cry at every meal time. Six long weeks until they finally took them out under GA after I pushed for a second opinion and X-rays.

The adult teeth didn't come in until age 6. She did have some speech issues - couldn't pronounce certain sounds however some of them I feel would have been an issue anyway eg "C/K" as that's the back of the tongue muscles. Some were the front too such as "Th" would become a "L" sound.

By age 3.5 I self-referred to speech and language who agreed she needed help and she came on leaps and bounds. She was discharged at age 7, probably could have been discharged age 6 from them.

I also worried the teeth would come in squint as she lost them so young but they have come in perfectly straight.

I hope this is the same for you. I can understand how worried and upset you feel.

Thanks for the reply. It's so comforting to know that your daughter is doing well. Yes both me and my toddler are going through a tough time. Me more than him I guess. Hope this ends soon.

Sympathies! My 3 year old fell on Saturday night and two teeth are wobbly now - front incisor and front lateral incisor. Emergency dentist on Sunday just said watch and wait so we'll have to wait and see!

We're also still breastfeeding too! Have you still been offering?

Yes I tried a lot but he simply refused. In the first night I could understand because I saw the pulp exposed in the broken tooth. So I could imagine how much pain it would cause him if anything touched that part so I didn't insist. The next day I got that tooth extracted and it has started to heal but he is completely refusing to breastfeed. He is Not even trying so I'm not sure if it's still hurting.

My husband took our eldest and youngest at the time bowling,I think they were 5 and 4. They got home and my husband said 'don't freak out' so I was immediately 'what's happened?!' My 5 year old opened his mouth and his 2 front teeth were gone Sad he was running full pelt at a wall and didnt notice there was a low counter and knocked his teeth out. They weren't even wobbly. Im not sure about speech as my son was speech delayed anyway but they took about two years to grow back and he does have a really big gap, not sure if it was caused by the trauma or would have been like that anyway though.could you ring the health visitor for advice or the dentist again?

My dd had an accident when she was about 3.5 and both her front teeth went wobbly. They did reset but fell our early. She’s 6 now & they haven’t come through yet. The dentist has told me not to worry but she is having a check up in March & she hasn’t got any speech problems. Hope your little one is okay.

I lost my 4 bottom teeth as a young toddler. I didn't have any speech problems and the adult teeth grew in straight at the right time, they are discoloured though as it was a pretty significant impact.

My sister ripped her bottom two LG teeth out age 1yo. The adult ones came in fine :) she did need braces but then so did I so she probably would have anyway.

Hi,

I lost my front teeth as an 18 month old chewing on a tee-towel rail. My teeth didn't come back until I was 8 and I genuinely thought the song 'all I want for Christmas is my two front teeth' was 'my' song. But I had no problems at all and could speak perfectly fine. The only issue I had at all was a gummy smile for 7 years.
