Have they considered CMPA? Both my nephews were diagnosed with reflux, but in reality they had CMPA and needed special formula.

Br1ll1ant · 20/01/2021 14:49

Silent reflux went for us at about 15 weeks but my DS had cranial osteopathy which helped too. I remember how hard it was - and it was ten years ago! It will pass though and take care of yourself as much as you can.

AndcalloffChristmas · 20/01/2021 14:53

We got told “it’s reflux” with Ds and given gaviscon which did bugger all.

It was actually tongue tie so I’d get that checked out.

AndcalloffChristmas · 20/01/2021 14:53

I know yours is a bit old for having it snipped but they will do it - Ds was about 6-8 weeks I think

Peppery123 · 20/01/2021 15:05

@AndcalloffChristmas

I remember tongue tie was one of the for3st things I asked abouf when she was born as 2nd dd had
Apparently doesnt have jt
But jhst wondering how that could affect sleep

AndcalloffChristmas · 20/01/2021 15:41

The HV told me that DS didn’t have it either, it wasn’t until I spoke to a lactation consultant that it was diagnosed. Having it snipped caused a bit of a fiddle with making sure it didn’t heal back again but it really worked.

It affecrs sleep because they can’t get enough food down them inone go. Which means they both feed really often and get air bubbles in their tummy which seem like indigestion/ reflux because they’re uncomfortable.

Peppery123 · 20/01/2021 16:17

@AndcalloffChristmas
Oh god. Dd is now bottle formula fed so would that be the same? Qith my second dd she had it and caused a problem with bf but dint know it can with bottle? Shes taking about 3-4 ounces per feed sometimes stretches to 5 but very rarely.

22Giraffes · 20/01/2021 16:48

Just wanted to add my similar experience, ds had so much trouble feeding, would cry and scream but spit out the bottle. Dr put him on gaviscon for reflux and prescribed different formulas to try. Finally a peadiatrician diagnosed tongue tie and he had it snipped just after 3 months. He was like a different baby and all the feeding problems went. Poor thing had been constantly hungry and frustrated and I was on the brink of a breakdown at every feed. I still feel awful that I didn't realise why Sad

Fr0thandBubble · 20/01/2021 16:57

Mine got better by 12 months. It's not much fun.

Peppery123 · 20/01/2021 17:21

@22Giraffes
Very interesting. Glad your ds got sorted. Can i ask how many ounces was he taking before diagnosed. Iv mentioned to the hv what dd is doing n she said thats fine! Althouhh on the tin it says should be having 6 ounces 5x a day. Shes not having anywhere near this

Peppery123 · 20/01/2021 17:21

@Fr0thandBubble

Oh god! Was it silent reflux or reflux? What were ypu prescribed

OP posts:
Fr0thandBubble · 20/01/2021 17:32

@Peppery123 Normal reflux I think... she was sick about 20 times a day and slept terribly (although sleeping got much better around 4 or 5 months in). We went to see a paediatric gastroenterologist and he gave us infant gaviscon (which didn’t help) but basically told us to just ride it out, which is what we did.

Fr0thandBubble · 20/01/2021 17:33

Oh, and we used a special kind of Aptamil for reflux which did seem to help a bit.

NoEndInSight1 · 20/01/2021 17:35

Sorry OP, it was thirteen months for us.. It was hard. Very very hard

22Giraffes · 20/01/2021 17:50

@Peppery123 I can't be 100% sure but I think he was only managing about 1-2 ounces at a time. He could get enough to feel satisfied because he just couldn't latch (not that I knew that was the problem at the time!) I'm still cross that it was missed by midwives, health visitors and the gp. The pead diagnosed it at the first visit and said it was a very tight frenulum.

fifiKma · 20/01/2021 17:56

I'm sure others have said but I'll share my experience. I was sure my son had issues with his mouth and reflux (all my cousins kids have it) no one took me seriously for ages as I'd been diagnosed with PN anxiety and depression. Then I took him to the kids hospital and they realised he had a functional issue with his tongue and silent reflux. We tried gaviscon for a total of 3 days of horrid constipation then got carobel thickener and omeprazole. Took a week to work but boy did it do the trick. He'll come off it slowly when he's weaned but honestly it's the best thing I ever fought for. He's a new baby and STTN ever since. I asked for a new HV too, old one told me 'I've seen him lying down without crying he can't have reflux.... Fight for your baby (and sanity)

LittleOwl153 · 20/01/2021 18:08

Yeah another one with 1yr plus... but there are things they can do. Don't be fobbed off with just gaviscon. My dd had 3 different meds, one to keep the milk down, one to push it through her system so it wasn't there to bring back. She was visibly sick many times a day though.

We had different bottles dr somebody I can't remember but they had like straws inside supposed to stop them drinking air. She was on high calorie sma as she wasn't gaining weight.

The things that worked for us. We put him down straight after a feed- no jigging about. Don't lie him flat. We used a v pillow to prop her up and had the head end legs of the cot propped up too. That and we had lots of changes of clothes and bedding so there was always spares and we didn't stress about it.

LittleOwl153 · 20/01/2021 18:09

Omeprezole that was one of dds meds.

mangothoughts · 20/01/2021 20:19

Got gradually better after weaning for us. DC was on a lot of medication - ranitidine and omeprazole but they only ever made a small improvement and had to keep upping medication. The only thing that really helped was weaning on to solid food which under dr recommendation we started at 17 weeks. I have awful memories of breastfeeding and lack of sleep, every feed was a battle.

bookstearocknroll · 20/01/2021 21:21

My twins both have reflux and CMPA, with one much worse than the other in terms of painful reflux. They're on carobel and omeprazole and it has helped enormously, along with neocate milk. Their consultant said they should grow out of it by their first birthday but we are still waiting - their symptoms are largely under control now so it is improving, but it's a long and exhausting process to get it sorted! Mine had their milk changed a few times and one ended up in hospital twice because of it - I think we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel at last now though, fingers crossed!
