To say napping is seriously underrated

snowisfallingallaroundus · 20/01/2021 12:45

I love napping. If napping were an Olympic sport I would be a triple gold winner.

I can nap anywhere for as little as 10 minutes, bus trips being a favourite before Covid.

My best napping scenario is a Sunday afternoon, rain outside and I'm cuddled up in a bed with freshly laundered crisp white cotton bedding and reading a good book while I nod off. Utter bliss.

Napping. It's the new Pilates.

Completely second this, ds goes down for his nap at half 1, I tend to have a half hour snooze too.
I like my Sunday afternoon naps too, on the sofa with the dog under a fluffy blanket haha.

Meowchickameowmeow · 20/01/2021 12:47

I hate naps, I wake up feeling like shit. I'd much rather stay awake and occupied till it's bedtime.

ShirleyPhallus · 20/01/2021 12:50

I absolutely love a nap and I say it’s the number 1 thing DH and I disagree with cos he doesn’t / can’t nap and so doesn’t understand it as “a thing”.

People who don’t like to nap are so infuriatingly smug. They’re usually people who get up at 5am and basically think they’re better people than everyone else because of it. “Ooooh I just get so much done with my day!”. Oh fuck off honestly.

Newernewist · 20/01/2021 12:50

I'm about to have mine now, I've got MS and suffer with fatigue, I cant get through the day without it.
Love my naps 😂

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 20/01/2021 12:54

Yes, it’s heaven. I stick to the sofa, feet up, nice cosy blanket, cup of tea and a book, guaranteed to nod off within 15 minutes.

One of the benefits of being an old fartette is that I can do it just about every day.

Treaclepie19 · 20/01/2021 13:03

I agree with the poster above. I hate naps. I feel dreadful after them and grumpy.

Sparklesocks · 20/01/2021 13:04

Timing is everything though.

A short disco nap? I feel re-energised! Fresh! Like someone just plugged my charger in and gave it a boost!

A bit longer than that though? I feel like I've been asleep for 100 years. My eyelids weigh a stone each. Every drop of water has left my body. I'm not sure what my name is.

Treaclepie19 · 20/01/2021 13:05

@ShirleyPhallus I don't fit your description!
I'm a night owl and typically stay up too late and get up as late as I possibly can (not late with a 5yo and 4mo)

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 20/01/2021 13:07

Naps make me feel grumpy and fuzzy too. But I don't feel superior to successful nappers, I just feel jealous!

QuestionableMouse · 20/01/2021 13:10

Naps are risky for me. Sometimes I'll wake up feeling fantastic and sometimes I wake up feeling like I've just been hit by a bus, even if I sleep for the same amount of time.

Sparklfairy · 20/01/2021 13:16

There's a lot of research that polyphasic sleep is better for you than one long sleep. There's different variations but the most common is 4-5 hours and then a nap mid afternoon. You do have to be careful though as waking up during the wrong sleep phase can cause awful grogginess as PPs have said.

There is a version called Uberman which involves no core sleep but 20min naps every four hours Shock

Stellaris22 · 20/01/2021 13:22

I love a nap! I set myself an alarm so I don't sleep for longer than 30 minutes. Any longer and I struggle to wake up and do anything.

I haven't had a good nap in far too long.

Sheleg · 20/01/2021 13:25

The only time I've been able to nap is when I was in my first trimester with DD. Otherwise, when I wake up I feel as if a black curtain has descended on my life. No joke. Naps take me to a dark place.

MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 20/01/2021 13:28

Hmm....its a skill to do it properly though. Too long and you wake up confused and groggy, too short and you jerk awake panicking with the wakey shakes.

surreymum89 · 20/01/2021 13:29

I would love to nap and wake up feeling refreshed, I feel like crap after though even more so now when I'm pregnant , I have been so tired recently but when I have let myself nap I have woken up feeling so dreadful , toddler just napping now and I'm desperately resisting because it's not worth it for how I feel after Sad

Seriouslymole · 20/01/2021 13:30

Can I recommend Claudia Winkleman's book "Quite" to you? Her first chapter covers this very topic and says how very important it is.

shouldistop · 20/01/2021 13:31

I never nap, even when heavily pregnant or with a newborn. Feels like wasted time and I wake up groggy

ithoughtisawapuddycat · 20/01/2021 13:34

I'm a queen napper - any place any time. Been known to nap in the car on the way back from the supermarket (DH driving).

Favourite current napping situation is after a long walk early on a weekend day, have brunch then nap on the reclining sofa with a blanket.

BoJoHoNo · 20/01/2021 13:39

Jealous of those who have perfected the art of napping. I can't seem to sleep during the day unless I'm really ill.

Tiredmum100 · 20/01/2021 13:40

I'd love to nap more (although I hate the word nap, don't know why 🤷‍♀️). Unfortunately work does not allow napping. But I love a little sleep of an afternoon on my day off. I've read the key to not feeling rubbish after a nap is to keep it short so you don't go into the wrong type of sleep. So around 10-20 mins I think?

SpudsandGravy · 20/01/2021 13:41

I love drifting in and out of consciousness on the sofa in front of the television, wrapped in a blanket and cuddling up with a hot water bottle :-)

Plump82 · 20/01/2021 13:44

I have napped for as long as i remember. All through my teenage years till now. I dont have late nights and now im working from home i dont have early mornings but i still love a nap. My favourite time is when i finish work at 3. Get myself a cup of tea, a book and then nap until my husbands home at about 6. If im REALLY sleepy i sometimes even have a lunch time nap.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 20/01/2021 13:46

I definitely prefer a lie in over a nap. I can never drop off unless I’m I’ll.

ParkheadParadise · 20/01/2021 13:49

I love a nap but only in my bed. I can't nap on the sofa.
When dd was younger we would both go upstairs in the afternoon for a nap in my bed

YesItsMeIDontCare · 20/01/2021 13:49

If napping were an Olympic sport I would be a triple gold winner.

No. No you wouldn't. Not if you were up against me. I can even out nap my cat.
