Just read an article ( 2019 ) stating lots of teabags contain plastic and plastic particles can leak into our tea!

Use the ones in the list that don't contain any then! I don't drink tea personally, but surely its better without the plastic!

enjoyingscience · 20/01/2021 11:11

Use ones without then, or loose leaf. I’m a big fan of loose leaf personally.

YANBU to think this is a problem (and causes a problem for recycling/composting).

YABU to post outdated information when PG Tips have been plastic-free since last summer.

Thesearmsofmine · 20/01/2021 11:12

There aren’t plastic free options. This has been widely known about for quite a while now.

Thesearmsofmine · 20/01/2021 11:13

are not aren’t 😆

CushionAdvice · 20/01/2021 11:17

Yes, this is outdated as PG tips are Plastic Free now.

FunnyItWorkedLastTime · 20/01/2021 11:17

Actually “plastic-free” may not be 100% accurate about PG Tips, but their tea bags are plant based and compostable, which is important.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 20/01/2021 11:19

Of course this isn't a surprise. Tea bag tea has a 'false' taste to it - I can't quite explain but I've only ever have loose leaf at home and I can taste tea bag tea instantly. So the bag will be part of that.

contrmary · 20/01/2021 11:20

YABU. Plastic particles would most likely be tiny and just pass through the body.

In other news, Jeffrey Epstein died.

I'm not sure the list is right, since Twinings "string and tag" bags in my experience compost esily (maybe it's the string that's plastic?) whereas I have yet to find a pyramidal bag that composts.

I suspect the water you pour on to the tea also has its share of plastic particles, though this isn't a reason to create even more.

Disfordarkchocolate · 20/01/2021 12:20

We switched to coop tea when we bought a compost bin so we could compost tea bags. I'm sure there's still plastic in our compost but I'm a firm believer in doing what you can.

PorkPieForStarters · 20/01/2021 12:30

Yorkshire Tea have already started rolling out improved tea bags, latest update here:

You might find this interesting about them, their carbon-neutral progress and about "plastic-free": tinyurl.com/yxrls8wk

FunnyItWorkedLastTime · 20/01/2021 12:40

Biodegradable tea bags with plant-based plastics make still take forever to mulch down in a domestic compost bin - they’re usually better suited to the council’s industrial super-hot composters.
