Everything has been so awful recently that I've kind of overlooked how momentous this is.

Go Kamala Harris and the Biden administration. 🇺🇸

I hope theirs is a force for change and renewal and decency and fairness.

I’m not even a little bit American and I think it’s great. Representation matters - only the very naive think otherwise. It’s a great step forward for America.

LetItGoGo · 19/01/2021 22:55

I remember Indira Gandhi, Golda Meir, Benazir Bhutto , the Icelandic president whose name escapes me, Edith Cresson plus the ones already mentioned.

USA seems late to the party!

No it is good to see a woman in the role, I think it is important to see women leading. Yes they can make mistakes as they're human but if it shows another woman the door is open for them then I'm all for it.

PlanDeRaccordement · 19/01/2021 23:00

Yes it’s a great milestone for the US, but not for the rest of the world. US still has some catching up to do. We have had lots of deputy/vice female leaders and female leaders. Harris isn’t even first female president in US.

And from what I know about her career, she is not exactly a good ethical role model for women and girls. But then, most politicians aren’t. Politics corrupt.

endofthelinefinally · 19/01/2021 23:00

Well, I suppose so. But Biden is set on removing women's rights, so I guess she is ok with that. So I am not optimistic.

Girlyracer · 19/01/2021 23:01

I'm English and live in England, couldn't give a stuff.

Macncheeseballs · 19/01/2021 23:04

That's a very limited view of the world

thecatfromjapan · 19/01/2021 23:10

I'm incredibly excited.
I ❤️ Kamala.

CustardySergeant · 19/01/2021 23:11

@GabriellaMontez

Isnt the VP a trans woman?
Why do you think that?
pompey38 · 19/01/2021 23:13

A female “ president “ you mean , that Biden is spineless af

thecatfromjapan · 19/01/2021 23:13

So much grinching on this thread!

OP, I'm with you.

Kamala is fab and it's going to be fantastic to say goodbye to Trump.

Indira Gandhi is an excellent example of why a female leader isn’t a great thing in and of itself.
Joeblack066 · 19/01/2021 23:33
@Justanotherlurker and as for Rachel Levine's appointment- does it matter that she is transgender? If she is the best person for the job? Presumably she will have to be confirmed by the senate so they will have to decide whether her merits are worthy?
A Hamilton fan and a voice of reason!

You have just made my day! Thank you 🙂👍🏻

You don’t think that the leader of the USA and their actions/ politics affects the U.K.? Seriously?!
formerbabe · 19/01/2021 23:38

Considering here in the UK we've had two female prime ministers, I cannot get that excited about the fact the U.S. will have a female vice president...long overdue surely

LetItGoGo · 19/01/2021 23:39

I think the relentless focus of UK media on the USA / Washington political scene is excessive and damaging to our understanding of the world.

I have become more convinced that they mostly do it because the source material is in English. It is treated as a soap opera.

Cherrysoup · 19/01/2021 23:41

Some extraordinary posts on here. Kamala Harris is trans?! Wtaf?? Talking shit, frankly.

For America, this is huge. Stop comparing this with European leaders being female, this is a massive first for the USA.

Give this presidency a chance: Biden has a huge job to unite America and will be making some huge changes on his first day (hello, Paris Climate agreement, plus other significant issues) I’m hoping he manages to stop the fuckwits wandering round with semi-automatic weapons banging on about the Proud Boys being a threat. Why are you carrying a machine gun round the streets, you twat?! Is your mother proud of you?

turnitonagain · 19/01/2021 23:45

Yes Britain has had female PMs but Kamala Harris is also a child of immigrants and representing Indian and Afro-Caribbean heritage at one of the highest levels in American government.

UK has not yet had a BAME person leading a major party.

JulieJJ · 19/01/2021 23:48

I cant believe the amount of focus this is getting in our news. I honestly dont care who is the president as we thankfully are not in the USA. At least Trumps given us something to laugh at. Old, creepy Joe is next. Meh. Same shit, different day.

pompey38 · 19/01/2021 23:51

“Yes Britain has had female PMs but Kamala Harris is also a child of immigrants and representing Indian and Afro-Caribbean heritage at one of the highest levels in American government”- just look at how much Obama’s done for the black community to see exactly what she’s going to do for her community 😂😂😂 sweet f...k all

turnitonagain · 19/01/2021 23:58

Wow Pompey good thing you can tell the future. Any tips on lottery numbers?

JulieJJ · 20/01/2021 04:17

A woman in an assistant position to a man. How very forward thinking America. Hmm

The US VP serves as President of the Senate. As the Senate is 50/50 Democrat/Republican Ms Harris will be the pivotal tie breaking vote.
turnitonagain · 20/01/2021 04:23

www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/1/18/kamala-harris-resigns-senate-seat-poised-to-become-vp

*As vice president, Harris will provide the tie-breaking vote in a Senate that will be equally divided between 50 Democrats and 50 Republicans. The vice presidency is the only constitutional office in the US government that “belongs to both the executive branch and the legislative branch”, former Vice President Walter Mondale once said in a 2002 speech.

Harris’s unique role will make Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer the majority leader of the Senate and give Democrats control over the Senate’s agenda for the first time in six years.*
