To think you should be able to buy alcohol at any time in Scotland?

Childfree tonight and was contemplating having some wine. Looked at the time and thought I have an hour to decide whether to bother or not (don't think I will). Anyways it got me thinking, I really don't know the thinking behind alcohol only being sold in shops between 10 am and 10 pm in Scotland.

Surely people just stock up so they don't run out, meaning they have more alcohol in the house that they are more likely to drink. Or it could cause an increase in people drink driving if they've ran out of alcohol, rushing to the shop to make it before 10 pm.

I've never really thought about it until tonight but it is just frustrating that I must make a decision before 10 pm. What if it gets to 10.10 pm and I fancy some wine? I think it's a pointless rule and drinking is not more prevalent in England where this rule doesn't exist.

Yes it is daft. You are not children.

ghostyslovesheets · 19/01/2021 21:17

well it's 9:15 so just make a decision?

BashfulClam · 19/01/2021 21:18

I don’t stockpile booze HmmConfused just go get some wine ffs!

beenthiswaysince18 · 19/01/2021 21:18

@ghostyslovesheets I know it seems simple enough 😂 could pop to the shop and be home in ten minutes but then I just think it's a bit too late now...drinking at 9.30 alone seems a bit sad now

Crappyfridays7 · 19/01/2021 21:20

I just poured a glass....go get some
I don’t intend to get drunk 🥴 just one or maybe 2 it’s a rare thing for me anyway

Mrbob · 19/01/2021 21:20

So drinking alone at 930 is sad but you want to be able to at 1030? Mmm
Yes it’s inconvenient. I live somewhere that you can only buy alcohol within much more restricted hours than that and have lived somewhere it is 4-7pm 6 days a week. Plan better

MadameBlobby · 19/01/2021 21:21

I don’t mind the rule, in fact I find it weirder in England where you can buy it all day and night!

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 19/01/2021 21:21

You're probably not going to drink tonight because of the time restriction - that's part of the reason why they do it.

chipsandpeas · 19/01/2021 21:22

its a joke, i went thru a stage of going for my shopping at 8am but couldnt get any drink so now have to go later as id have to do 2 trips

dunno why they dont scrap it as i dont think it makes any difference

ButDoYouAvocado · 19/01/2021 21:22

I get pissed off I can’t buy it at 7am. I’m not going to drink it then, that’s just often when I do my shopping 🤷🏻‍♀️

NotCornflakes · 19/01/2021 21:23

I live in Scotland and had no idea this was a rule! Blush

YouBoughtMeAWall · 19/01/2021 21:24

I think if it’s a problem in your life that you can’t buy drink after 10pm then you’ve got bigger problems in your life.

beenthiswaysince18 · 19/01/2021 21:24

Okay I'm going to the shop to grab a bottle 😂 question is do I go to Asda where can get two bottles for a tenner or go to my corner shop where one bottle is 8 pounds?

OP posts:
gobbynorthernbird · 19/01/2021 21:27

Corner shop. It's late and cold.

Doggybiccys · 19/01/2021 21:27

It’s for harm reduction. Problem drinkers will stock up to an extent but may drink it all then want more. Or need a “hair of the dog” early in the morning. It’s to try and reduce the amount of people drinking for days on end - not really aimed at those who are not problem drinkers.

TheRealLadyWhistledown · 19/01/2021 21:31

Doesn’t bother me at all, it’s just the norm!

Am I right in thinking in England you can drink in the street too? That I find odd!

teenagetantrums · 19/01/2021 21:35

Well where l live all the shops closed by 10pm anyway...l miss London sometimes popping out for whatever l like at midnight. Enjoy your wine.

Isadora2007 · 19/01/2021 21:35

Of course scotland has a worse drinking problem than England. So yes we did need some rules for harm reduction and it stops a lot of the excessive drinking as people can’t keep on buying booze once drunk and wanting more. Not too sure about the morning rule- maybe to stop the hair of the dog thing right enough.

chipsandpeas · 19/01/2021 21:37

my local asda is open 24 hours, so i could go at 3am to do my weekly shop but i cant buy alcohol - not everyone who wants to buy alcohol outwith the 10-10 has a problem
strawberrie · 19/01/2021 21:38

Well I like it because I find if you get tot he supermarket before 10am it's lovely and quiet Wink

YouBoughtMeAWall · 19/01/2021 21:41

not everyone who wants to buy alcohol outwith the 10-10 has a problem

No, I didn’t say people wanting to buy alcohol after ten have a problem. I said if it’s a problem that you can’t buy alcohol after ten, then you have bigger problems. For someone who wanted to buy alcohol at 3am with their shopping, but couldn’t, would just accept they need to come back again the next day. It’s not a problem. If it is a problem, then you have a problem.

beenthiswaysince18 · 19/01/2021 21:42

@YouBoughtMeAWall I don't think people feeling frustrated have a problem. More so just inconvenienced that they have to make an additional trip. I don't have a problem and I don't like that the government can decide when is an appropriate time to purchase alcohol. I'm a grown woman.

beenthiswaysince18 · 19/01/2021 21:44

Also retailers are well within their rights to refuse to serve certain people alcohol, if for instance they seem heavily under the influence already. So that could fix that issue immediatly.

TrickorTreacle · 19/01/2021 21:49

Remember, everyone on here are alcoholics. Even if you're tee total, you are still an alcoholic. That's the Mumsnet mentality for you.

Yep, typical mumsnet. Can't have a conversation without people trying to create controversy. I was waiting on the, 'wine isn't an essential item' posters to appear Grin
