Shoot me now, but I was just reading an article about furlough on Daily Mail (Halo).

Most of the top comments are people saying

"Get those workshy people back to work!"

"Furlough should be a loan that only those who are furloughed should be paying back"

"I've been working throughout, why should I pay??"

But I doubt these people would be saying this if they didn't have "secure jobs".

Of course you get some who take advantage, like everything.
But I have a waitress friend who rang me crying when restaurants were forced to close and she's now furloughed. She would rather be working but there are lots more applicants for jobs these days so not easy.

But AIBU to think it's wrong to want to punish people who were basically forced out of work because of lockdown by claiming they should be the only ones paying it back? Especially when a lot of these waitors, bar staff, beauticians, hairdressers probably aren't on amazing wages anyway! And to top it all off: recession so harder to find a job.

People need more sympathy and empathy, especially during this time when the virus has been around for almost a year so mental health will be declining.

PyongyangKipperbang Hmm

are you on glue or just goady for the fun of it?

I said that being paid, and haven't got to work, whilst you are looking for a job is not the worst situation in the world.

No one is stopping people from working. It might be a different job but let's cut the crap, there are jobs.

I’m starting to think you’re just being a goady fucker for fun now.

Where are these jobs you speak of?

Lets be honest, the first furlough was probably popular, because so much enjoyable when the sun is shining. I have a friend who boasted about her furlough tan. This time round though she is hating it. There’s obviously nowhere open to go to, and the days are grey and cold. Also there is more anxiety now about the safety of the jobs of people on furlough. First time round people were confident that they had jobs to go back to, but now there’s the realisation that because the situation has gone on so long, that redundancies are inevitable.

Donnsssfaa · 19/01/2021 22:27

@Iknowwhatudidlastsummer

But a lot of these industries did open up, so some people would have come off furlough over summer and then back on it in winter when the restaurants/pubs/hairdressers shut again.

And a lot of these jobs aren't 'mythical'.
You are being pretty small-minded. You have a secure job, lucky you. But don't tell the waitresses, hairdressers, beauticians, musicians, bar staff etc. to take responsibility for the governments incompetence.
It is not their fault they are furloughed. Nor is it their fault we are in a recession so even if they wanted to find another job, it is not as easy as snapping your fingers and one appearing.

Donnsssfaa
my "secure" job is in recruitment Grin

Still doing ok, thank you! But don't tell me there are no jobs, I would have had no income since April if that was true!

justasking111 · 19/01/2021 22:34

My son had to furlough his staff yet again, hospitality. He said they are so bored and keep asking if he has heard anything on the grapevine. They all want to work. So no I do not think people think furlough is a paid holiday.

PyongyangKipperbang · 19/01/2021 22:35

And report away but I stand by what I said.

LemonSherbetFancies · 19/01/2021 22:35

Do sort of agree with a previous poster.
DP has worked non stop throughout coronavirus. His business has done better than ever but he is exhausted and although he had my support during the first lockdown, now I am back home, he is homeschooling and working and is fed up and envious of those who have it easier on furlough.

Donnsssfaa · 19/01/2021 22:35

@Iknowwhatudidlastsummer you're the exact definition of the 'i'm alright jack" mindset.
And if there are so many jobs, why are lots of agency staff (the people you employ to get.money from) slipping through the nets of furlough and also struggling to find work?
Good for you that your recruitment agency is finding lots of work for people but don't speak for the entire country.
Many parts of the UK are struggling for jobs. I think you're just posting here to be goady.

OP posts:
Donnsssfaa · 19/01/2021 22:37

@LemonSherbetFancies as a previous poster said, your husband can always look for a job in the hospitality industry once it opens again, if he thinks it looks so much easier.
Many furloughed would love to be in your husbands shoes, many people on furlough have.already been made redundant.

No she isnt.

Apparently I am.

Because I have not found a job after 4 months with 30 years of experience....there are jobs out there after all! It must be me, and all the other poor fuckers being told how to suck eggs by recruitement "advisors".

you know it's possible to have a different opinion without being "goady" Hmm

I am not sure why you are attacking ME especially on this thread. I am not speaking for the entire country, but look around you. How many recruitment agencies have folded and shut? Not many around me, and their staff is not furlough. The job market is far from dead, things are different.

If people think they will get back to their job after being furlough for so long, good luck to them.

There is a recruitment agency in my office block. They’re whole staff is on furlough. Lazy fuckers should have recruited themselves into another job instead, considering there are so many going at the minute.
Donnsssfaa · 19/01/2021 22:44

@Iknowwhatudidlastsummer there's a difference between having an opinion and being purposely small-minded.

Well i'm glad you think the job market is far from dead, but i'm sure research, news articles and studies will tell you otherwise.

Your contribution to this thread has really inspired all of us furloughed.
It's all lies that even minimum wage jobs are getting over 100 applications compared to usual years because @Iknowwhatudidlastsummer says the job market is still booming. God knows why we are currently having a rise in unemployment then. Hmm

ivegotdreadfulpmttoday · 19/01/2021 22:45

Well I've worked throughout and will be made redundant in a couple of months (company closing due to Covid) so I won't get furlough pay either.

Donnsssfaa · 19/01/2021 22:46

@ivegotdreadfulpmttoday
I think a universal basical income would have been better than furlough as so many people fall through the cracks,
I hope.you find something soon Flowers

Ltdannygreen · 19/01/2021 22:47

I’d love to go back to work, my job is what keeps me sane, that is very much fading. Homeschooling when I’m not a teacher is having a knock on affect to my mental health. Theory was never my strong suit, Practical I can do all day long but schools don’t want practical. The sooner I can get back to work and the kids back to school the better.

Donnsssfaa · 19/01/2021 22:49

And to add,
Take a beautician for example.
A beautician is currently on furlough as the spa she works for has had to shut.

She thinks "ooh i will apply for some jobs".
Do you really think a company will hire her over an 18 year old just starting out when they know that once lockdown is over she will be straight back to the spa? No. Most of the time they will hire someone they know won't just leave after 5 weeks.

OP posts:
Iknowwhatudidlastsummer · 19/01/2021 22:51

Donnsssfaa

I am not trying to convince you, I don't care if you and a couple of charming posters with questionable attitude feel better blaming everything and everyone for their situation.

I am just saying I am not the only who wouldn't be able to pay their bills if there really was no job 🤷 maybe I should pretend otherwise and claim furlough too. Would make homeschooling easier.

Donnsssfaa · 19/01/2021 22:54

@Iknowwhatudidlastsummer yes because people on furlough are pretending their company has closed.
We all know Frankie and Benny's is still open, God why must those waitors and waitresses pretend it is closed so they can be furloughed?
