Grocery bill increase

Just been reviewing this month's spends and I'm gobsmacked by the price of groceries lately. If anything, we've been cooking more from scratch, so it should surely be cheaper?

I don't know if it's Brexit, Covid, or supermarkets taking the piss. Has anyone else noticed this?
@SchrodingersImmigrant agreed.

When I can I won’t be relying on deliveries anymore, I’ll be off to Aldi to see what the fuss is about Wink
I liked some aldi things but not a fan of veg and fruit because it just never lasts. But cheese before Christmas? Awesome.
I go to foreign supermarket for veg and fruit usually. Nothing super special, but often better quality than supermarkets (not always thought!).

@Definitelynotlazy

Btw..local greengrocer is a lot cheaper and added veg can really stretch out meals, baking a bit for treats and going for big hearty stews and soups with leftovers. No one is hungry x
Our local (ish) greengrocer is great but definitely not at all cheaper than a supermarket.

I really need to switch to Lidl and Aldi again as I'm spending around £80 at Morrisons. We get a delivery every fortnight with a local top up in the middle. We're a family of 4 on one income so need to check our spending.

I'm avoiding going out unless I have to so get a delivery coming in fortnightly.

MyCatShopsAtAldi · 20/01/2021 10:15

The fruit and veg at our Aldi is pretty good but we have had more and more duds this year - cheese with a BB date of February with mould on it (unopened, no issues with fridge), etc. Their range of free range meat is improving though.

Our Aldi is starting to do click and collect, which might help people avoiding shops...

Covidasaurus · 20/01/2021 10:17

MY wine bill (ahem) went up 25% this month: I get the same thing every month from a local importer. I assume Brexit taxes?

ZoeTurtle · 20/01/2021 10:43

I felt a bit sick when I looked through my bank statement! Two adults and two cats, £120 a WEEK? It's not like we dine on caviar and lobster. I'm vegetarian so we don't even buy much meat.

tanguero · 20/01/2021 11:11

The official ONS inflation figures released today (available on the BBC website) show FOOD AND DRINK prices FALLING by 0.7%. Just saying.

MyCatShopsAtAldi · 20/01/2021 11:12

@ZoeTurtle, we have exactly the same thing. I’m not even going to say what I spent on groceries in November because frankly I was shocked - and it’s not as if we dine on caviar either.

We spend more than you but with two kids and a cat. Cat food adds up!

LetItGoGo · 20/01/2021 11:14

What's their time frame?

My swede was cheaper this week over a fortnight ago.

The lack of offers has been in evidence since last March and upped our grocery bills but post Christmas I have noticed the Tesco clubcard prices can be a good discount. So I take heart from that at least!

AdoraBell · 20/01/2021 11:27

Our local farm shop isn’t cheaper either, but I buy from them to avoid plastic packaging. Their products are limited though as its only 3 farms in a 6 mile radius.

They're for December..

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 20/01/2021 12:45

Now I'm back on the low carb, no alcohol diet I'll see if my bill drops. I've been shopping on Waitrose because they are good about monitoring numbers and cleaning trolleys and it's a spacious shop, but I'm missing Aldi. My local one has decent veg and meat, but it does get a bit cramped.

user1471439310 · 20/01/2021 13:19

I live in the US and prices are up and sales and offers are down. No more going to multiple stores to buy, I just pick two and do the best I can.

I don't think the ONS figures take into account the decline in the number of discounts and offers. They meerly compare the price of a basket of undiscounted products against a year earlier.
BlackeyedSusan · 22/01/2021 02:00

noticed price rises too. some things have gone up 50p not just a few pence.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 22/01/2021 02:56

Funnily enough I did a big shop yesterday in person rather than online (first one since Christmas) & noticed prices had gone down slightly. That was in Sainsburys & they had a load more variety of everything!

Redrivershore · 22/01/2021 05:24

I agree about Tesco Club Card offers being good, if I didn't have one there wouldn't be many offers at all, also I buy my delivery saver pass with the points, which is 3 x points so big savings there also.
