AIBU to have reported doorstep seller

Persilorariel · 19/01/2021 16:57

Just had an illegal doorstep seller peddling dusters ring my doorbell.
No mask, trying to show me things in his bag. This annoys me at the best of times, but now? Cases are really high, wasn’t very happy at being told to move on.

AIBU to report this peddler without a licence to the local police? I’ve already done it via an online form, but I’m not being too harsh am I? I can just image someone vulnerable rummaging in his bag and having a nice chat.

Note - I’m well aware of the colloquial NN name for these people, don’t want to offend any Nottingham people.

Last time I looked people were allowed to spend their money as they choose

And last time I checked I was entitled to an opinion, and to ask them not to send their shit to my home.
There is already a No Jehovah's Witness sign on my gate and now they know their nonsense isn't welcome on my doormat either.
But then you'd probably give them a fiver to leave 😂

Sh05 · 20/01/2021 13:36

We don't get anyone selling anything but we did have an influx of people offering new boilers and under floor heating. She demanded I let her in to see the existing boiler and take pictures of our heaters, so she really wanted to wander around the whole house photographing each heater.
I refused her entry and she walked off insisting that she would be back with her partner and he would take the pictures. Needless to say I ignored their banging at the door.

boredinthouse · 20/01/2021 13:38

This happened to me once, was burgled a couple of nights after.

No, in non covid times I’d invite them in for a cup of tea because my mum was one and I have a soft spot for them.
Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/01/2021 13:42

You do know (JWs) pay for the stamps from their own pocket? And pay for the leaflets?

More fool them; if they insist on posting stuff through doors which already say it's not wanted, or mail stuff to folk who've already asked to be removed from their lists, then that's their look out

And it’s not someone else’s place to tell them to donate to food banks instead.
Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/01/2021 13:50

Fully agree - they could suggest it might be a worthwhile idea, maybe, but certainly shouldn't be telling them to do it

The JWs' choice of where to offer their "help" is theirs ... just like their choice of wasting money on those who've said they don't want it

the90swerebetter · 20/01/2021 13:50

Asob story. What a disgusting comment. !!!!!!!!!!!!

No what’s disgusting is pretending to be ex-military with PTSD, benefitting from real veterans and taking charity away from the ones that actually are genuine and need help.

VinylDetective · 20/01/2021 13:52

Then we agree. That was a lot of fuss about nothing, wasn’t it?

AdobeWanKenobi · 20/01/2021 13:54

If they truly cared about the community they sent out hundreds of pamphlets too then they might offer a care for the opinion of that community, which was for the most part, preferred if they didn't write to them and that it was a spectacular waste of money which could have benefitted food banks locally.
Our local Facebook page was unanimous. Do some good in the area and help people in need not send pamphlets which would be filed straight in the bin.

CruCru · 20/01/2021 13:55

The tea towels sellers are con artists.

However I usually (nicely) tell the JW ladies that I know that going door to door is part of their religion but I’m not interested. They can be a nuisance but there’s no need to be unkind to them.

Oh well if the local FB group was unanimous ... 🤷‍♀️ Ours attracts all the lunatics in a two mile radius, I don’t suppose it’s unique.
AdobeWanKenobi · 20/01/2021 14:07

Not all FB groups are created equal. Lunatics you say?

Either way I imagine when the day comes they can knock doors locally they wont receive an especially warm welcome. This is small village and people have long memories. They could have rallied, helped the less fortunate and built some bridges in the community. Instead they chose to use their funds to send unwanted messages.

mumwon · 20/01/2021 14:17

our local (& other areas)Trading Standards have specifically stated that this is not permitted at this time & that the stories told are not backed by ANY charities - its a con & our trading standards (check your own I bet they say this) give a phone number to report
Just because someone tells you they belong to ex offender or ex serviceman does not mean its true & at this time not only is this illegal - it is dangerous regarding covid

PersilOrAriel · 20/01/2021 14:39

Update from the local police.

Turns out the sob story was indeed just a story. So my “despicable comment” wasn’t so despicable after after all.

@virucidalrage

what about Avon? had someone shove few little catalogues through the door the other day, in spite of my No Junk Mail sticker and we are in a pandemic FFS. I binned it. She can knock on Monday all she likes but I will not be answering the door, I have Covid. Unsolicited junk that comes through goes straight into my bin.

Some people are just idiots.

I do Avon but am only dropping books off to regular customers who are still ordering. But whether unsolicited or not, it is different to dodgy duster salesmen who are face to face and could be dangerous!
LegoAndLolDolls · 20/01/2021 16:21

@virucidalrage

Yes I have also had the handwritten JW letter, stating that this pandemic is the end of times and only the good are going to be savedHmm
Covid is the much anticipated end of days so they are getting closer to heaven on earth. Sliver lining I guess
HarryBlackberry1 · 20/01/2021 18:58

We've had two of these callers in the last couple of weeks. I'm just not going to open the door.

user1471565182 · 20/01/2021 19:15

I really do wonder how the fuck people fall as low to do this, even shoplifting/begging brings a better income and doesnt involve menacing old people in their homes.

user1471565182 · 20/01/2021 19:19

The thing about dog thefts and them doing this to scout out burglary is so exaggerated. 99% nonsense.

Woman near me was having a real meltdown over what I was 99% certain was bird shit on her wall 😂
WoolieLiberal · 20/01/2021 19:34

I remember that door-to-door salesmen were quite common when I grew up in the 80s and 90s round our way.

Haven’t seen any since then, mind.

WoolieLiberal · 20/01/2021 19:37

What’s the origin of the phrase “Nottingham Knockers”, by the way?

Usually a term of abuse by reference to a place is considered offensive (eg “Spanish practices” for cutting corners). I’m surprised that the police would use it in this context!

user1471565182 · 20/01/2021 19:39

Yeah heard the 'chalking houses with dogs' thing a few times. Often 'they look foreign' attached to it. Its just Facebook cranks winding up the gullible.

unbotheredbutbewildered · 20/01/2021 19:49

The police don't even arrest kids stabbing each other when they see it in broad daylight.

YANBU as the police won't do anything anyway! Grin
