I was appaled today to see a young girl on the bus about 18 months with very small shoes with her feet bulging out over the top. They were obviously about 2 widths two narrow and looked so uncomfortable. I felt like taking them of and giving her feet a rub! She was dressed in designa clothes and the Mother was very smartly dressed. I would chose cheeper clothes any day so that I could afford properly fitted shoes for my daughter. Dosn't she realise what damage she is causing? It baffles me.

ds(5) was at a disco party this afternoon and there was a little girl with high heels on.She keot complaining that they were hurting her and her little feet were red raw when I took them off.

Yes MotherFunk, the little girl did have fat feet bless her but she could have had a wider shoe or a T-bar. My daughter is a G width with a high instep and her feet are fitted with shoes that suit her foot shape and they never bulge. Honestly if you saw this poor little girl it would bring a tear to your eye.

it probably wasn't that she couldn't afford the proper fitting shoes - they just didn't go with the outfit

catsmother · 28/10/2007 22:46

Totally agree. If a child is wearing obviously ill-fitting shoes and shabby/cheap clothes then, despite worrying the child feels uncomfortable, you have to allow some leeway in the judgement stakes, sadly, but where they're wearing fancy designer stuff there's surely no excuse for making your child suffer. I've read about lots of adults with foot problems which can be attributed to not having the right shoes, for whatever reason.

I can't buy my DSs shoes off the peg as they have very wide feet - they have to have their shoes properly fitted. Buying designer stuff or from a supermarket sadly just doesn't work. The shoes don't have different width fittings and they just can't wear them.

I don't mess with their feet. Uncomfortable shoes are horrible, and I don't want them to have my bunions when they are older. Mind you mine are hereditary rather than the result of bad shoes but even so I do try to protect their feet to minimise the effect of genes.

I suspect if they really were too small the little girl would soon let her mother know and refuse to walk anywhere in them!

I've seen children with their feet stuffed into shoes or sandals where they obviously didn't fit. Hopefully the lady was on the way to get a new pair fitted.

mummyloveslucy · 28/10/2007 22:59

Yes, I hope your right Niecie and if she refuses to work then she can't show of her designer ware to the full. Her Mum may be forced to treat those little feet.

I had Clarks all my life and have bunions now. Back then (in the days where they used to x-ray your feet in that machine) the only choice I got, having very wide feet, was invariably in brown.
