Insurance claim

Hi
Last year a neighbours relative parked in the pitch black right behind my drive and as I reversed in the steamed up car I clipped his car . It was a banger . Beat up . I of course told him and he got a quote for a dent and a scratch of £192 .
I couldn't pay it so notified my insurance.
I've just found he claimed for damage costing almost £3000. This has obviously affected my renewal and my insurer told me they were happy I'd notified them and didn't t tell me of the claim . It meant on renewal it looked dodgy as I said I'd had an incident but no claim (as I had no idea )
I have the original quote for the £192 . Do I have any recourse? I feel like this man has probably got every dent and scratch repaired at my expense.

I'm livid . Yes it was my fault . But from £192 to £3000??? Any advice much appreciated

Thanks

Oh and I know this shouldn't make a difference but the neighbours involved have been isolating- so for months I've do t their shopping. It's me they come to when they need anything. Male neighbour is disabled and I regularly pick him up off the floor when he's fallen . I buy their shopping and they pay me back but it comes from my account first . I know it's not their fault - they're lovely I'm just so annoyed that their horrible relative has totally fiddled my insurance !

If the car is a banger surely it would have been written off?

SacramentoQueen · 18/01/2021 21:21

I get that it’s really frustrating and feels like being ripped off, but whether your insurer paid £192 or £3000 shouldn’t really make any difference to you. Your no claims discount would still be affected in the same way and most insurers wouldn’t take into account the amount of a claim when pricing your renewal unless it was a much higher cost than that. You can send the original quote but the likely response will be that once they removed the bumper/trims or whatever and looked a little deeper they found additional damage.

fuckedandbombed · 18/01/2021 21:24

It was a banger but I barely touched the bloody thing . I was reversing out of my drive at like 3 miles per hour .

Did you not get photos? Proof of the damage done, then it can be compared with work that's been done

mummydoingamasters · 18/01/2021 21:35

Your side of the claim has gone down as incident only but he has claimed through your insurance for everything he can in the area of damage by the sound of things.

I'm assuming your insurance company asked for points of impact to both vehicles?

You probably know this (hopefully they told you) but you will have a NCB impact marker (if your no claims is protected), you get 1 more fault claim in 5 years before the protection is removed and they reduce your NCB) on your policy.

Your insurance provider should have been a bit more diligent about the details and/or asked you for photos

mummydoingamasters · 18/01/2021 21:36

I would gather all of the evidence you have and contact them to raise your concerns for your neighbour claiming for damage he wasn't entitled to claim for.

You have every right to know what your insurance has paid out for and you can ask yourself or your broker for a repair invoice breakdown.

fuckedandbombed · 18/01/2021 21:39

I did actually take pics . I'm going to call insurer tomorrow.

ConfusedDotty · 18/01/2021 21:40

The value of the claim is irrelevant, £300 or £3000, the fault unfortunately was yours.

He was not paid £3000, that covers, repairs, hire car and admin costs. This is why we have/need insurance.

It's crap, I have been in the insurance industry for 30+ years.

MattWanksock · 18/01/2021 21:56

Your 192 was probably at dents r us whereas the insurance would have treated it like a new car using approved parts and paints. Everyone knows insurers are expensive.

It obviously wasn't a banger for repairs to cost that much and it not be written off and it can't be that old for the same reason.

The amount doesn't matter. Your insurance would have gone up regardless.

Why were you driving with a steamed up car? If you can't dodge a parked car you can't dodge a pedestrian. That's why your insurance has gone up.

MattWanksock · 18/01/2021 21:59

And as above, it includes all aspects such as like for like hire cars while his was in the garage. Not just a repair from dents r us.

fuckedandbombed · 19/01/2021 21:35

His car was a 58 plate . I'm fairly sure he's claimed for more
Damage than I did!
I live in a cul de sac . No pedestrians . He parked inTHE most
Stupid place imaginable. Yes the fault was mine but never had a car
Parked right behind my drive before.

I wouldn't call a 12 year old car an 'old banger'. It is clearly worth at least 3k.

fuckedandbombed · 19/01/2021 23:49

My car is a top of the range model and A 60 plate . Now
Worth 1500.

His was 2 years older than mine . And his repair was almost 3k ?

OP posts:
fuckedandbombed · 19/01/2021 23:50

And the original quote I got was £192.

How does that translate to £2600?

smoothchange · 19/01/2021 23:57

He doesn't decide how much the claim is valued at.

BluebellsGreenbells · 20/01/2021 01:16

The company would have loss adjusters come out

I reversed into DH car and it didn’t appear to be damaged, but the garage said it was.

A loss adjuster came and took photos of both cars and sent in a report

I also took it to the garage for an estimate for both cars, we actually clashed on appointment times.

When both estimates were done the company approved the repairs.

They wouldn’t be able to fix additional issues, photos are taken of the whole car and not just the damaged areas.

KathleenTurnerOverdrive · 20/01/2021 02:31

Depends on the car.

Anyway, I'd stop kvetching, messed up, didn't demist the car before pulling off, didn't look. Be thankful it was an unoccupied lump of metal you hit.

As others have said, an insurance assessor will have determined the cost of the repair, not your neighbour. The quote for £192 was probably a dentless repair/touch up and filler job. The 3000 quote is probably for a new bumper and panels, plus colour match, plus admin, plus a hire car.

No one is trying to scam you or rip you off.

araiwa · 20/01/2021 03:45

A claim is a claim.

Doesn't matter if it's a quid or a million quid

Any claim will increase your renewal/ new policy

KathleenTurnerOverdrive · 20/01/2021 04:51

More pertinently, does anyone know where PJ Sparxx the star of the porn parody 'Muffy the Vampire layer' stands on the impeachment of Trump?

AlwaysCheddar · 20/01/2021 07:18

It’s the principal so I’d call the insurers. Not fair as it affects all premiums ultimately.

What did they say?

Elai1978 · 20/01/2021 08:22

The value of your car is irrelevant in relation to his. Must be something fairly rubbish to be worth that little at 10 years old, many 10 year old cars are still worth £20k+

PawPawNoodle · 20/01/2021 08:37

My grandad's 53 plate diesel with 200k on the clock is worth more than that. You must have an undesirable car.

The cars age and whether you consider it a banger are clearly irrelevant as your insurers thought it was worth at least 3k. They aren't in the habit of paying out more than strictly necessary to make the claimant 'whole' again.

Newkitchen123 · 20/01/2021 08:47

I think when doing a write off / beyond economical repair they do this if the value of the repair is more than a certain percentage of the car value. So not 100%
So therefore clearly the car is worth not just 3k but more than 3k. So therefore not a banger.
Clean your window next time and watch where you're going

dontdisturbmenow · 20/01/2021 09:19

Because sadly, insurance companies now sell details to companies that sort everything out in their behalf and these just con insurances.

I had someone hit my car, admitted liabiity. She was originally considering paying cash so went and got a quote from local repair centre. £600. This was too much for her so agreed to go through insurance.

Details sold to Enterprise and told to get the car to a repair centre 1/2 h away. Was told I would get a nice rental car, which I didn't need. Quote from this place: £1,200 and told I'd have to sign a weaver absolving them of any respondibity in case it was taken to court.

I told them to get list, contacted her insurance company who were very grateful, and agree to liaise directly with the local repair company. They arrange everything, car repaired in one day (as opposed to the one week I was told by the other repair place), excellent job done.

That's why our premiums go up.
