To have been scared enough to shout at her?

OK. So I lost my temper a bit and wound my window down to shout. Maybe I should have asked if she was OK first!

I was driving down a single lane, potholes and all. A woman was coming walking towards me and I wish I had an Idiot Walker Bingo card.

  1. Mask tucked under her chin
  2. Phone tucked under her ear, chatting
  3. Scratching a long length of scratch cards

I slowed and pulled across the road as far from her as possible.

She walked partway onto a drive

As I waited she walked - didn't stumble or anything, just walked - out in front of my car.

I had stopped she didn't even notice and actually walked into the front of my car.

At that point I wound my window down and, as she screamed at me, or whoever it was she was on the phone to, that I had run her over. I shouted back and wasn't particularly polite about it!

She eventually walked round my car and we both went off on our way.

But fuck! She scared the hell out of me!

I drive that road every day, to walk the dog. There are always people, kids, dogs there. But I've never seen anyone with as little self awareness!

And having typed that I feel calmer, but FFS!

Ah bollocks to it!

I should know better than to expect anything else, shouldn't I? Grin

My apologies, I'll repent over a second cup of tea.

Or should I ask MN to delete the thread, as it could be outing?

Or got to Flouncers Corner and strop off?

Definitely nbu, OP!

The mask is a sure sign she's a twat- has no one realised/read about why masks shouldn't be pulled under the chin?

www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/uk-news/warning-you-should-never-pull-18637726 For those who haven't the brain power to find out for themselves.

sunsetorange · 18/01/2021 15:51

The fact she had her mask pulled under her chin is completely irrelevant to the story the OP posted though...

and frankly, I'm not a huge reader of Manchester local news as I live about 500 miles away. And if someone was close enough to me that I got droplets on my neck I would say I was pretty screwed anyway, mask or not.

SleepingStandingUp · 18/01/2021 15:56

@CuriousaboutSamphire

Why was I scared? I can't think of a better word for that moment of fright, held breath, slow motion, utter bemusement, as something unexpected happens.

It was odd.

I shouted

She shouted

Nobody was actually hurt!

I forgot I posted in AIBU. Shouldn't expect people to have any empathy, for either of us! Grin

But you were stationary right? Or have I misunderstood?

Today I was sat in my stationary car when someone walked in front of me. I could have killed her!!

Manchester???

God there's some bloody bitches on here. 'It's aibu so I must be contrary'Hmm

I'm with you OP. I had a mother pushing a buggy walk out in front of my car, scared the life out of me. I started shouting and she completely ignored me, completely oblivious to the fact I nearly mowed her down.
I have a dash cam now because I swear one day I'll run over a fucker on their phone, and it'll prove it wasn't my fault. They just walk out in front of you like bloody zombies.

Twins for a full house?

This What has whether she has a mask on got to do with anything? Is this just another thinly veiled 'Rona Bash' thread, as there's about a gazillion of them already.
NewYearNewLockdown · 18/01/2021 16:11

Why weren't you paying attention to your driving? Who the fuck watches random pedestrians when driving on a single narrow lane with potholes??

I assume you don't drive? Good drivers spot potential hazards before they happen. In fact this is exactly what OP did but the silly moo still walked in front of her, luckily OP had already slowed down.

Wheresmykimchi · 18/01/2021 16:17

@CuriousaboutSamphire

I agree that its irrelevant if she was distracted by a scratch card as opposed to a book, phone, dog etc.... Not really. SHe was non hjer phone, scratching off a few scratch acrds as whe walked dopwn a narrow lane. That's how oblivious she was!

The mask thing was me noticing, it was odd, as was her whole behaviour! That was the point of it. A weird moment or two in my day!

It's really weird that so many posters are reading so much into what I observed. It was what it was. She was oblivious and could have got herself badly hurt!

I think PP are trying to imply that you're looking down on her buying scratchcards.

YANBU OP.

TonMoulin · 18/01/2021 16:32

I have to say I am wondering how she managed to hold her phone and talk to whoever it was AND scratch the cards at the same time, several of them....
I would have needed at least another pair of hands to do that! Grin

Gwenhwyfar · 18/01/2021 16:35

"You are being unreasonable re the mask, she doesn’t need it on outside and was probably having it like that ready to pull up when She needed to."

No, you're not supposed to wear it on your chin and neck. You're supposed to sanitise your hands and take it on and off (or keep on).

Phone wedged under side of chin, one hand to hold cards, one to scratch

I cycle, often on cycle/walking paths near me, and the numbers of people with headphones on/lost in their phone, who'd not notice if Martians landed, is extraordinary. It's just part of life now, having to manage your way around people like that. It's a bit irritating but I don't think there's no point getting angry about it. One day, they won't get so lucky. One day, some one less patient than me will run into them.

peak2021 · 18/01/2021 16:54

Reasonable to shout because of the basic lack of attention to the road and surroundings.
