Went to my out of hours doctor today with very painful mastitis. I asked him to prescribe some pain relief too as I am in a lot of pain. He prescribed Solpadol and antibiotics.
I immediately took pain relief 2 tablets and the dose of antibiotics.
Now that I feel a little better I have just read the information leaflet and realised it says don't take solpadol while breastfeeding as it passes through the milk.
I feel like such an idiot for trusting what the doctor prescribed and that I have put my baby at risk.
Do you think I should bring my baby to get checked? ... He is 10 weeks old but about the size of an average 5 month old.

Could be worth just calling 111 to talk it through and put your mind at ease! Are you based in the UK? Take a look on the breastfeedingnetwork website! Most drugs say don’t use when breastfeeding In their leaflets, just because they haven’t been tested as it’s unethical... there is a drugs factsheet on that website with more info on each and you might find it’s fine! It was put together By a pharmacist who does a lot of breastfeeding research!
The dr must have known you were bf so it would be pretty terrible if they prescribed something you can’t take, so try not to panic.

Thanks for the replies, I have looked up the national breastfeeding website. It recommends keeping an eye on baby for any breathing difficulties or drowsiness. I will keep an eye on him and ring my own gp tomorrow and ask him to prescribe something more suitable.
I appreciate the advice, that's a great website I will save it for future use

Whole Cabbage leaves cool from fridge were an absolute gods send for mastitis. Long warm shower to rid excess milk maybe. Of no cabbage use cold wet flannels. Hope it’s better soon

The reason is that solpadol has codeine in it and codeine can metabolise into morphine, which can cause issues in babies.

However, this is a relatively new change, as solpadol was a standard painkiller given post birth even to breastfeeding mothers.

I know this as I had babies when it WAS prescribed and when it wasn’t.

I would suggest a chat with a pharmacist but it’s unlikely to do any damage OP.

@Lemmeout thanks I will try that. This is my 4th baby. I have breastfed all of them and never had mastitis before... I woke up feeling horrific this morning

@Merryoldgoat - thanks, that's good to know that they used to give it to mothers before. I will keep an eye on him tonight to be safe, he has been fussing all day so I expect he will be more tired than usual even without the solpadol!
