How much is your water bill?

Sounds strange but I'm slightly concerned ours is too low, and there's been a mistake somewhere.

Two adults, two bed terrace and our 'supply' water is £10 a month and the 'waste' is £17 a month. So £37 a month. We are on a meter and we have just had a reading.

I have a bath every other day, plus we have showers on days we don't have baths. Run the dishwasher everyday, washing machine around 3-4 times a week. Both working from home so flushing the loo and using taps all day etc.

Does this sound right? I'm worried there's been an error and we will get a massive bill to make up for the low payments.

YABU - this sounds right
YANBU - it seems too low

If it is anything like ours they will only assess your bill once a year so you may be using more now but won't know until your review. For what it's worth, we pay £50 a month, three people who shower daily, someone at home all the time, dishwasher on once or twice a day and washer on at least three times a week.

maddening · 17/01/2021 22:51

£500 per year

freeandfierce · 17/01/2021 22:52

I live alone in a terrace, WFH, shower and bath daily, washing 3 times a week, no dishwasher. Pay £15/month.

ImACrustyJuggler · 17/01/2021 22:52

Not sure how helpful this is, but we are also two adults in a terraced house; not on a meter and we pay £57 a month.

No dishwasher, three loads of washing a week and a shower a day... not that this has any bearing on the cost though as we're not metered.

That being said, I am pretty convinced that we are massively overpaying (and have been for 10 years because our landlord doesn't want a water meter Angry)

frostedingaling · 17/01/2021 22:54

It’s 37 a month for me too, 3 bed semi with 1 adult and 3 DC under 5

freeandfierce · 17/01/2021 22:55

I'm not metered btw.

AnneLovesGilbert · 17/01/2021 22:55

Ours has just gone up from £22 to £28 a month. We’re on a meter.

Moanranger · 17/01/2021 22:55

I pay twice a year, & it is close to yours, about £70 ( eg £140 per annum) Waste is about double that, so similar to you.
We are three adults in a detached house plus garden. But I have water butts for garden & NEVER use mains water for that, also not for cars nor patios, etc.
I think your bill is ok.

Moanranger · 17/01/2021 22:57

Forgot to say it is metered, so measured & should be accurate

lanthanum · 17/01/2021 22:58

Turn your stopcock off and see if you still get water.

I know someone who had some work done on their kitchen, and when the workmen turned the water off, nextdoor's water supply dried up.

It turned out that when the neighbours had a kitchen extension, the plumber plumbed it off their water supply, because it was easier. The houses were at the time occupied by related families, and when water rates were flat rates, it didn't really make much difference. It's been sorted now.

SciFiScream · 17/01/2021 23:00

We don't have a water bill. It's part of our council tax (Scotland).

I hope you manage to find a good answer.

Chuckleknuckles · 17/01/2021 23:06

I live in a fairly big house, 2 adults, 1 child. Not sure if that makes a difference in terms of what they assign to the house as waste water.
£26 per month. It used to be £20 per month until fairly recently. I’m on a meter. I think it’s quite expensive.

pumpkinpie01 · 17/01/2021 23:11

We are not on a meter and I don't want to be . Ours is £48 a month for 8 months, pay nothing for 4 months

HorseOfPhillipMoss · 17/01/2021 23:16

Where I live you have two bills, one for clean water and one for waste 24.51 and 30.66 so £55.17 all in, but that's paid over ten months not twelve for some odd reason. We're not in a very cheap area for water and that's rated not metered, however we live in a 3 bed house with a big garden (takes a lot of watering in summer) and ours was £50 a month when we lived in a one bed flat and didn't have a toddler. We do 7-10 loads of washing a week, DS has a bath every night, DH bathes more often than showers too, so we're probably better off not on a meter at this point.

RachelHRD · 17/01/2021 23:23

Erm isn't that £27 a month??
I'm in a 2 bed flat, me and 2 kids who are with me 8/14 days and only shower once or twice a week when with me. I shower daily, use a small dishwasher 3/4 times a week and washing machine 2/3 times a week and my bill is £42!

5foot5 · 17/01/2021 23:35

Two adults, two bed terrace and our 'supply' water is £10 a month and the 'waste' is £17 a month. So £37 a month.

Actually that's £27 a month!

But anyway we are 3 adults in a 4 bed house and we have been paying £31.87 a month but we have just had a bill saying it is going up to £38.96

I guess we might be using a bit more now WFH. However the Bill shows that in the last 6 month we averaged 250 litres a day, which is the same as the previous 6 month. Six months before that, i. e. end 2019 we used 220 litres a day. I thought that sounded bad but they had this thing to compare with other households. Apparently the average for 3 person households is 367 litres a day so we are actually well below average. We do wash, honestly!

Megan2018 · 17/01/2021 23:39

Ours is £29
Metered, large 3 bed. Family of 3, toddler DD in cloth nappies so a lot of laundry. Daily showers for us, dishwasher daily and DD bath.

vodkaredbullgirl · 17/01/2021 23:41

Depends who you water company is. There are 3 adults in a 3 bedroom house, we are in the southwest. Just had my bill and it has gone up to £58 a month Shock

thegcatsmother · 17/01/2021 23:41

£53 a month, and that is water and sewerage charges for 3 adults.

HazyJuly · 17/01/2021 23:42

£129.80 a month x 10 months

I always win these type of threads (you do win if highest don't you?)

My gas and electric are almost £400 a month as well.

RavingAnnie · 17/01/2021 23:46

Ours is £65pcm for two of us. It's high for our area and I've no idea why. Similar bill to a family of five I spoke to a few months ago!

We've checked that there are no leaks.

Itsagrandoldteam · 17/01/2021 23:46

We live in Cheshire, in a big house with 5 bathrooms. The dishwasher and washing machine are on most days, toilets are getting flushed lots of times a day due to DH working from home and no school.

Our bill last year was £39 per month, £470 per year, we are on a meter. Our bill is considerably less than my sisters, who I'm sure doesn't use anywhere near the amount of water than we do, yet she doesn't want a meter.

Sh05 · 17/01/2021 23:48

Ours is £33.10 per month but we don't have a meter so it's a flat rate. 7 of us in total but mostly everybody showers daily, no baths.

OrangeSamphire · 17/01/2021 23:49

£150 a month. Not metered.

That’s Cornwall for you. We pay for the upkeep of clean waterways and beaches so it’s expensive.

MoonlightMedicine · 17/01/2021 23:49

Metered, 3 bed house with 2 adults and 2 kids. £48 per month.
