Maybe it's just me, but I'm noticing this more and more. Folk might post on MN with a view which others find controversial and in order to bolster their argument they will claim to do a certain job e.g. teacher, HCP, epidemiologist etc. Obviously, some WILL be telling the truth but there are occasions when it seems incredible they would hold a particular view if they did a certain job e.g. not many people who work in a frontline hospital role IRL are likely to be anti-mask/restrictions etc.
I noticed this a while back when I countered a poster who had a different view to myself on Covid and they eventually added that their brother was an ICU doctor as if to somehow justify what they were saying. I just read an anti-Lockdown thread and a regular poster claimed to own a company where the Government regularly employed them to solve complex problems, adding that they were one of the few people in the world with the skills and qualifications to find an alternative and more creative solution to the pandemic than Lockdown.
I'm probably being naive and this has always been a thing, but am noticing it so often at the moment. Anyone else see it a lot too?

People lie on the Internet?! Wow, who knew.

wellthatsunusual · 16/01/2021 20:02

YANBU, it's very noticeable. There are a few regular posters who say they are eg a solicitor, an HR manager, a dentist, a GP or whatever and I do believe that they are. But about 99% of the time I think 'hmmm, really?'. They might be telling the truth of course but it takes more than someone saying 'I'm a doctor' for me to actually believe them.

Yes it’s best to take everything you read on here with a pinch of salt. I could be a sentient Big Mac which somehow learned to type and you’ve never know.

GinJeanie · 16/01/2021 20:06

Haha. Not saying I didn't know people lie on t'internet 🤣.
Just observing a pattern re particular type of fabrication atm I guess. Specific to the pandemic and the many polarised views on here. It's kind of disturbing, funny and pitiful all rolled into one.

I agree, some posters definitely create a narrative to enforce whatever agenda are trying to push.

GinJeanie · 16/01/2021 20:09

@Sparklesocks - exactly that! I'm just not sure they realise it appears pretty transparent

There have been a few occasions when someone has said they are a teacher and Ive thought not a fucking chance. They might work in a school, but...

But the worst for me is the gem ‘man here’. Angry

LooseMooseHoose · 16/01/2021 20:10

You see it in real life too though. "As a mother..." Hmm

Most people don't want/can't have discussion. They just want to tell the world they are right.

GinJeanie · 16/01/2021 20:12

@PaigeMatthews OMG yes! 😡

You seem to have accidentally started 2 threads on this OP, so I'll paste my reply from the other one.

Yes, particularly since the pandemic there seems to have been a massive increase is posters claiming to work for the NHS.

Whether they do or not is largely irrelevant, as this is the internet and anyone can claim to be anything to bolster their argument.

I've always taken it with a pinch of salt.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 16/01/2021 20:14

I must be right because I’m a . In my experience many professionals are reluctant to offer concrete advice on tricky situations outlined in a brief and subjective way (as so many posts are).

I think during the height of the teacher bashing that was going on recently, a few trolls were posting like complete dicks and pretending to be teachers just to piss people off.

Equally, I often think the posts that start with 'Man here' are often female trolls/PBs just stirring it up.

GinJeanie · 16/01/2021 20:16

@LooseMooseHoose - It's so true that people can't have a discussion and take it really personally when other disagree/have different opinions. I despair when I read posters saying they've been "attacked" or "shouted down" when they majority of folk on a thread have disagreed with them. Or they attack themselves. Then they'll come in with "as a nurse with 20 years working for the NHS" line... 🙄

@WorraLiberty - I posted in Chat originally but then realised it was Covid-related and felt bad. If I could remove it myself I would

Nobody who’s actually a dr or nurse could ethically offer advice on the internet to a patient they haven’t reviewed. That cuts out a few ppl who claim to be drs/nurses.

There’s always the vague ‘health worker’ with very confident opinions who is clearly a chiropractor’s receptionist or similar.
