To think Virgin Media is the worst fucking company ever? Why is anyone with them?

My account page says my broadband is up to 200mbps. Their app tells me it's actually something like 11mbps. I have rung and the automated thing reset the router which did fuck all. Their own engineer put the router next to the TV which their website says not to do?!!?

Ds can't play on Roblox, which normally wouldn't bother me but it's currently his only form of interaction with his friends. I'm a teacher so we all have live lessons next week, which won't happen if it's still like this. It's never been great and as good as it's meant to be but it's got absolutely shit since lockdown.

I've been on hold for nearly an hour. There's no live chat and you can't message them on Twitter. They were shit when I had it installed and I had no wifi for a week and now this. I fucking hate them. Only went with them as it was a great deal - even the Sky guy said it was a no-brainer to take the deal. God, I wish I'd stayed with Sky. My contract is up at the end of the month but at this rate I'll never get to cancel it and I want to complain!

I'm not UR am I?

I don't have virgin but I did have my router right next to the telly and was having problems with WiFi. I now have it a little bit further away from TV and it has been great. I think it had been getting interference from the games console we have below tv and also the tv.

Witchend · 16/01/2021 18:30

They've given us great customer service both here and at work. Since we changed to VM at work we've had much better internet; before it was always cutting out at inopportune moments. We can rely on it now.

The only thing they didn't do was trauma counselling packages for traumatised teens when our wifi was down for 24 hours. What's more they laughed when I asked.
They did give me a free couple of months though.

ChrissyPlummer · 16/01/2021 18:31

Dreadful. DH was with them when I moved in with him as you got BT Sport free as a hangover from when Setanta was cancelled. WiFi was constantly disconnecting, usually when I had something I really needed it for. I used to study with the OU and took a days leave to write an assignment. No WiFi, so I wasn’t able to do any research. Their helpline told me to “use someone else’s house” 🙄.

It’s not available where we currently live but it’s apparently being installed in the next few months. I have told DH I’ll put the house up for sale if he so much as THINKS of changing from Sky 😂.

PhatPhanny · 16/01/2021 18:33

Absolutely awful!
Our wifi used to reach the end of our 100ft+ garden, now I can't get it in bed, literally right above it, my mobile is less that 3 meters from the router!
We have 400mbps but it jumps about constantly mainly staying below 180mbps usually around 50mbps.
And the wifi literally only works in the front room.
I am moving this month, and can't wait!

Ha op, I’ve been with them 10+ years, too expensive but otherwise all fine and never had problems. But they only offered £3.50 pm discount so I have gone to sky today! Install in 8 days then I’m cancelling virgin.

Online offers not available to current customers only new ones. If it works I’m saving £50pm 😊

twitter is your friend. Keep on tweeting. Eventually you will speak to a real person and they will assist you.

Panicmode1 · 16/01/2021 19:37

We have done as a PP suggested -bought a mesh router and use tge VM one in modem mode. It's been a complete game changer. 6 of us WFH/homeschooling and teens online gaming/zooming/chatting with friends in the evenings with no issues after MONTHS of dire 'service'

Panicmode1 · 16/01/2021 19:39

Oh and I also wrote to the CEO and had a call back from the Executive Team....after weeks of frustration trying to get hold of a person.

Abouttimemum · 16/01/2021 19:41

Great for me 🤷‍♀️ I wouldn’t touch sky with a barge pole though.

NotMeNoNo · 16/01/2021 19:42

We're with VM because it works and I dare not change. We were messed around so badly by BT I said never again. We moved in here and had broadband and phone by teatime that day.

WiFi is mostly to do with your house, we have all main devices ethernet to router and no problems. On WiFi it's 10% if that.

I'm sure Virgin have bad service but it's pot luck with the others too.

OrangePlumGrape · 16/01/2021 19:42

We also switched over lockdown and regret it. Have those ugly boosters plugged in everywhere upstairs now. Angry

AKissAndASmile · 16/01/2021 19:45

They are shit

We have the speed, but it's so unreliable. I quite often have to go on to my phone's data because the super-duper 300 Mb internet has no connection. What's the point in the fast speed if it doesn't work half the time? 🙄🤔

Keep putting their price up too Angry

SoupDragon · 16/01/2021 19:46

I've been with them for years and years and have never had a problem 🤷🏻‍♀️

ivykaty44 · 16/01/2021 19:46

I found they were fraudulently taking money from my dads account, this was an account I had closed with them - but instead they took the money out of his bank account..

I found this when he died in June.

In july I notified the bank and closed the account

Told Virgin they needed to investigate this

In august they wrote to dad, asked him to check over direct debit they’d set up on his account as it hadn’t been paid they’d set another dd up

They addressed the letter to dad

Then in the letter reference mr dad (desc)

I was upset that they’d actually write to someone they knew was dead, and try again to set up direct debit

I did eventually get the money back, they admitted they were in the wrong but wanted me to re set up the account to get a refund “ as it’s the only way to get money back”

I took to mediation on their own advice

They then quibbled I wasn’t the customer...

They paid by bank transfer eventually

But I cancelled all my products with them and went elsewhere

AKissAndASmile · 16/01/2021 19:47

@ivykaty44 Shock

Anonanon12 · 16/01/2021 19:48

Having problems too!

Littlebeach · 16/01/2021 20:11

@TheProf just did this and it’s brilliant! Thank you for posting. Bought a mesh system last month and just done my speed test and it’s the fastest it’s ever been.

TrickorTreacle · 16/01/2021 20:37

@peak2021

Try as a company dealing with both Virgin Media and BT. You won't think Virgin Media are the worst then.
I've been with both and I disagree with you.

Virgin:
Signing up to Virgin: 1 out of 5, was on hold for 40 minutes just to make an account
Speed in relation to money: 3 out of 5, £38 for 50mbit
Internet reliability: 5 out of 5
Technical support: 5 out of 5, always responsive and sorted out my problems.
Cancelling Virgin: 1 out of 5, retentions was relentless!

BT:
Signing up to BT: 5 out of 5, handled by the providers themselves
Speed in relation to money: 4 out of 5, £28 for 50mbit
Internet reliability: 5 out of 5
Technical support: 5 out of 5, sorted out my 1 issue during the first lockdown.
Cancelling BT: 5 out of 5, again, handled by the providers themselves

The reason why I switch providers every year is because I get cashback every time.

cricketmum84 · 16/01/2021 20:44

You should try working for them 😭 worst 8 weeks of my life.

Roselilly36 · 16/01/2021 20:48

Thanks for the heads up, I have been with sky for years, moving soon & I was considering moving to Virgin, perhaps not!

MarshaBradyo · 16/01/2021 20:52

Agree tried to use them when we moved. Have never known such pain re using a company. We stopped trying after weeks and weeks of cancelled appointments

Belledan1 · 16/01/2021 20:57

Thanks for the tip re the tv. I will try moving mine although Virgin are coming out Monday . I take minutes for meetings and sound goes off on teams all the time luckily can record it. Internet must go off 4times a day.

lurchersrule · 16/01/2021 20:57

I always found Sky customer service really good. In fairness I don't think I asked as much of the broadband when with them as it wasn't lockdown and kids didn't game as much and not in their rooms.

I have had a good sort out of the tangled wires behind the telly and managed to move the router away from the telly and wall and slightly closer to ds's room. He then reported the speed was up to 40 mbps in his room. However, the place I've now got the router in is no good permanently as the wire stretches across a door at waist height so I looked on Amazon for an extension lead and found a 10m one for £7 with hundreds of great reviews. Then I had a look and saw that it won't be compatible with the wires and ...holes/ports whatever they're called on the router. Seems all Virgin stuff is different and therefore harder. Aarggh!
