The best books you've ever read

Following on the from the other thread
where someone asked what the most ridiculous thing you've read in a book was. (And therefore ruining anything on my wish list 😂)
I want to know what the best book you've read is. What book I must read soon.

I'm partway through 'Becoming' by Michelle Obama. I got it as a sample and after two or three chapters had to buy it on my kindle. It's so good. She writes really well.

Mara and Dann by Doris Lessing

Pollaidh · 16/01/2021 10:02

I have books I love and will read annually, and then books I love to read once but don't feel the need to reread.

Probably one of my favourites for rereading, (or maybe three favourites) are Dorothy L Sayers' Have His Carcase, Gaudy Night, and Busman's Honeymoon. She's some levels above a mystery writer like Agatha Christie, they're quite literary. You'd want to start with Strong Poison first but it's not as good.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 16/01/2021 10:05

Knowledge of Angel's by jill Paton Walsh
Lady Audley's secret by Mary Braddon
Dracula By Bram Stoker

Cluas · 16/01/2021 10:13

Well, maybe tell us the kind of thing you like? There’s no point in me getting eloquent about Henry James if you read mostly thrillers.

SpudsandGravy · 16/01/2021 10:15

Eustace and Hilda by LP Hartley.
Jane Eyre.

PinkyParrot · 16/01/2021 10:26

I loved Brazzaville Beach by William Boyd. He's a great writer but it possibly also chimed with the fact I was living abroad and I envied the adventure.

London1977 · 16/01/2021 10:27

The secret history by Donna Tart. I still love it x

I read pretty much anything. I read all the time. I've often said I'd live without my phone but not my kindle 😂

A Town Like Alice by Neville Shute.
Love it.

FenEel · 16/01/2021 10:45

The Secret History
Morvern Callar
Mrs Dalloway
Station 11
Rivers of London

DoloresOnTheDottedLine · 16/01/2021 10:48

Behind the Scenes at the Museum, Case Histories and Life After Life by Kate Atkinson are all brilliant. She has a really engaging writing style and they make me laugh and cry. They have an element of mystery/who done it about them as well.

I was going to say exactly this but you already have, so I won’t Grin My copies of Gaudy Night and Busman’s Honeymoon are absolutely falling apart, I reread them so often. I also reread The Dark is Rising (in a similar state), Children of Green Knowe (on my second copy) and A Country Child, all children’s books.

The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver

peak2021 · 16/01/2021 11:01

Watership Down has stayed with me all my life as a happy memory.
The Rotters Club brought back many memories of the era it was set in.
Midnight's Children is wonderful.

Some of my favourite books are:

Brave New World
Light a penny candle
Adam and Eve and pinch me

They’re all very different from each other, and I reread them every few years.

Wiglio · 16/01/2021 11:24

All of Paul Theroux’s travel books, great content beautifully written. I don’t get on so well with his novels though.

Coldilox · 16/01/2021 11:28

A Thousand Splendid Suns
The Color Purple
I Know Why the Caged bird Sings
The Passage Trilogy

Newbie1999 · 16/01/2021 11:30

A Thousand Splendid Suns is really good. Sounds wanky but it’s one of those books that ‘stays with you’ for a while after.

MinnieJackson · 16/01/2021 11:31

Hard to pick one book.but I really like the help by Kathryn Stockett

OwlinaTree · 16/01/2021 11:32

I love this, I'm always looking for ideas for books to read. Recently I read the family upstairs, by Lisa jewel, that was really good.

OwlinaTree · 16/01/2021 11:32

A thousand splendid suns did make me cry.

teuer · 16/01/2021 11:34

Wiglio. I love most of Theroux‘s novels but don’t get on with his travel books.

My favourites are
The Mosquito Coast - Paul Theroux
The Help - Kathryn Stockett
The Poisonwood Bible - Barbara Kingsolver
To Kill A Mockingbird - Harper Lee

unexpectedthird · 16/01/2021 11:35

I don't think I could ever choose just one book or series or anything like that and my favourites are really diverse.

But today I'd say the Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde. I'm going to start re reading them today. I think they're just what's needed to get through a lockdown.
