To insist that I’m right and DH is wrong

Lighthearted!

I’m trying to drink more liquids and I’m aiming for 8 glasses a day; I had porridge for my lunch today and always like it milky so used more milk. When I mentioned to DH that this counted as one of my 8 glasses of liquid a day, he said it doesn’t!

His logic is that it counts in cereal because you can SEE the milk but not in porridge because that’s ‘like counting the milk you use in cakes or cooking’.

Who is BU? (Please say him or I’ll never hear the end of it)

Again- lighthearted!

If the porridge is wetter and seems more liquid than usual then you're right, but perhaps not by the whole 'glass'.

aprilanne · 15/01/2021 19:24

Haha you are joking right the glasses of liquid are supposed to be things you drink not cereal milk or porridge milk so you both being daft to be honest .

PandemicPalava · 15/01/2021 19:32

I think you're right op. It's liquid and if you're measuring overall liquid intake it counts. Only know this as when people have to be careful that they don't take in too much or have to track fluid intake for medical reasons, all of this is counted.

PandemicPalava · 15/01/2021 19:33

But I don't think milk in cake counts but in cooking yes, soup, sauces etc

randomchap · 15/01/2021 19:36

Isn't needing to have 8 drinks a day for health a bit of a myth?

Purplealienpuke · 15/01/2021 19:37

Certainly when my friend was having dialysis she had to count the fluid she made the porridge with......

Grooticle · 15/01/2021 19:38

I wouldn’t count that, it’s a bit like counting an orange as a liquid because orange juice is a liquid.

Oreservoir · 15/01/2021 19:39

When my dd was little she wouldn’t drink much so I used to give her jelly.

The milk in your porridge would certainly help with hydration to some extent.

Tal45 · 15/01/2021 19:43

I don't think porridge is a good example as the oats soak up a lot of liquid, you might even need to drink more as they still absorb water in your gut I thikn I read and can make you constipated because of it.

Godimabitch · 15/01/2021 19:44

I dont think liquid in any food counts tbh

ItWorriesMeThisKindofThing · 15/01/2021 19:46

All fluid is included in “fluid intake”

But the 8 glasses thing isn’t really based on any good science

AlternativePerspective · 15/01/2021 19:46

You’re right. I have a 1.5l fluid restriction because of heart failure and all fluids which are added need to be counted because you are still ingesting those fluids through the food you’ve added it to.

It’s been debunked a good few times, but still keeps, hanging on in there.

OP, no need to slavishly track intake and force yourself to drink water you dont want. Just check your pee colour, and drink more fluids if it’s dark.

foxhat · 15/01/2021 19:50

There is liquid in most foods but that does not make them a drink I am afraid. Your OH is right.

firstimemamma · 15/01/2021 19:52

Your dh is right imo

LaMarschallin · 15/01/2021 19:52

Obviously you're right.
Liquid doesn't stop being liquid because it's added to food.
If you're adding more liquid to your food, you're increasing your fluid intake.

OP, no need to slavishly track intake and force yourself to drink water you dont want. Just check your pee colour, and drink more fluids if it’s dark.

That makes perfect sense.
A glass of milk may not equal a glass of water but it still helps to hydrate you.

LaMarschallin · 15/01/2021 19:53

Iirc, 20-30% of our liquid intake comes from food.

Doffodils · 15/01/2021 19:54

The main question is why do you want to increase liquids?

If you have some sensible reason why you need more liquid then yes it counts. If it's to do with some faddy health article, probably not.

Daphnise · 15/01/2021 19:59

I never eat porridge, and detest milk.

Best to drink water.

Does wine count as liquid.......?

AlternativePerspective · 15/01/2021 19:59

Fluid added to food absolutely does count, according to my cardiologist.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 15/01/2021 20:01

Some of the liquid in the porridge will evaporate off while it's being made, but most of it still counts as liquid intake.

PaigeMatthews · 15/01/2021 20:03

Ive had two pints of shandy. I could have had four halves. Does that count as 4 glasses?

AlternativePerspective · 15/01/2021 20:05

Yes. A glass equals 250ml.

It’s not 8 glasses but 2 litres which is vastly different. I have a 500ml glass in the cupboard, if I drank 8 of those that would mean I’d drunk 4l of fluid.

goodwinter · 15/01/2021 20:08

‘Fluid’ includes not only water from the tap or in a bottle, but also other drinks that provide water such as tea, coffee, milk, fruit juices and soft drinks. You get water from the food you eat as well – on average it’s estimated that food provides about 20% of your total fluid intake

Food does count

MiddlesexGirl · 15/01/2021 20:15

The whole premise of 8 glasses of water a day is flawed so YANBU
