Not really an AIBU but posting for traffic, name changed as don’t want this linked to other posts.

AIBU = job 1
YANBU = job 2

I’ve recently been made redundant from local government job, the positive part is at my age (52) and with the benefit of some redundancy I can now choose for the first time ever to be part-time. Lots of caring responsibilities elderly parents plus tween/teen children.

I’ve also been job hunting and have a job to start on Monday but waiting on the result of another (they’ve delayed someone’s interview so results not out) and need to sort out my thinking if I’ve get offered the one I’m waiting on. So pros/ cons

  1. Charity, starting working from home but long term in charity premises about 15 minutes commute. Pros, lovely people, great charity, can work hours to have day off and younger child doesn’t need to go to breakfast/after school club in term time when schools are back, but would need to go in holidays. DS starts high school in September 2022 so wraparound care stops being a consideration. The role isn’t in the profession I’m trained in but can use the skills from my profession. Cons, minimum holiday time, not in my profession, don’t see this as a role I would do until I retire. Might get frustrated.
  1. NHS job, again starting working from home, commute would be around 30 minutes with clear traffic each way. Pros, in the profession I’m trained in, equates to an equivalent of about one level down from the job I was made redundant in. Almost 4 hours less per week, additional week holiday, 40% more pay than job 1 for the less hours. NHS benefits including pensions. Cons, DS would probably need to go to breakfast/ after school club for a couple of days, but wouldn’t need to go as much in holidays. Longer commute. There’s some restructuring on the horizon in about 12 months so some uncertainty about the role. Would work 3 rather than 4 days

What’s your views? I can argue both ways and will be academic if I don’t get offered job 2, but need to be ready just in case.

Number 2

Better paid and being NHS of they restructure I'd say more chance of you having other options.
More holiday, key esp with kids and working 3 days instead of 4 means one less day to cover every week of school holiday / 1 less day to juggle homeschooling with home ed. Even if they go back Feb (ha!) there's still bubble popping to consider.

Pensions rubbish in charity sector. Don't assume people are nice bevause its a charity

KnowlWay · 15/01/2021 13:15

Two every single time. Job 1 type roles will come around again if job two doesn’t work out. Good luck.

I have worked in both - would never ever work for NHS again.

Number 2. Then you get 2 days off a week to do all your other things. More money too. Better progression.

Aprilx · 15/01/2021 14:07

I don’t know anything about working for NHS or charities, but definitely job 2.

YorkshireIndie · 15/01/2021 16:09

No.2 for sure
