I’m an idiot (car related)

I’ve just had my car collected for its annual service and MOT.

I’ve just realised that the fuel tank is nearly empty. I meant to refuel yesterday but given how little I’m out these days I forgot.

The light hasn’t come on but will soon I’m sure. Will it make the journey to the garage and back?

It’s probably about 6miles each way

YABU - the man will breakdown on the way

YANBU - it’ll be fine but you’ll get (rightly) told off when he brings it back.

I’m so annoyed with myself - I feel like my brain is a foggy bog these days.

Well done you! I bet that comes in really handy if the plane breaks down and they need someone to lend a hand. Gosh, there must be egg on all the faces of those idiots who get on a plane to Majorca without even the most rudimentary understanding of aeroplane engineering.

You know full well what I mean. Everything we do is a calculated risk, it certainly helps to understand at least something about what you’re entrusting your life to. Maybe that’s just me. I certainly don’t understand people who go through life with no concept of how things around them work.

Well at least it won't be your car they use for the butty run today Grin

Depends on the car. We had a mondeo which we were driving some back roads in the middle of the night, no fuel station. Light came on and car fuel amount went down to zero and we drove for about 50 miles past the zero. Almost divorced my husband that night 😆 was so annoyed! A few years/cars later we had a scenic. Driving in an area we didn't know, before the days of smart phones. Car fuel light came on. It got to 35 miles I think and we thought we had plenty. Turned out it was pretty accurate. Ran out of fuel on the motorway! 😱 we should have been fined or something for being so idiotic!

I know you are all sorted OP but in my world the E on the petrol gauge is E for Enough.

sanityisamyth · 15/01/2021 18:29

My now ExH took my car one day knowing full well I had a job interview for a promotion that afternoon. He brought me back to car half an hour from my job interview with 0 miles in the tank (according to the gauge) and it was exactly half an hour to get there so I had no time to go and put even a tenner of fuel in. I have never been so bloody nervous as the roads to the interview were country lanes and lots of junctions. I was waiting for any sign of a stutter from the engine as a warning it was about to conk out. I managed to get to the interview ok, and even managed to drive her to a petrol station to fill her up again.

Looking back, it was ExH way of sabotaging my interview. We separated 3 months later and split up permanently 4 months after that. I also got the promotion!!

@eurochick

I'm not sure why people are being so pissy. There are two types of drivers- those who are uneasy when they get down to quarter if a tank and those who enjoy petrol light roulette. I'm in the former category and have probably seen a petrol warning light come on less than a dozen times in 25+ years of driving. I have no idea how far any of my cars would have gone once it showed!
My husband is the former. I'm the latter. He was soooo gleeful the one time my car wouldn't start in a decade of driving. Fuck off dh I'd rather have one disaster that a lifetime of stressing every time the fuel gauge goes a millimetre under half a tank!

@sanityisamyth - your car was working for you that day! It obviously knew how important the interview was Wink
