I say sledging but my DH says sledding. Who is right here?

YABU - it's obviously sledding, stupid!

Or

YANBU - your husband doesn't know what he's taking about!

Sledging

Dahlietta · 14/01/2021 14:09

Sledging here. I think sledding is generally more common in America. It may be the case in parts of the UK too, but I haven't come across it.

Ismellphantoms · 14/01/2021 14:10

Sledding in North America. Sledging in the UK.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 14/01/2021 14:10

Both of you. Although, from Googling, sledding is more north American. Both are of Dutch origin.

CrystalMaisie · 14/01/2021 14:10

Google says sledging is British, sledding American.

ghostvillage · 14/01/2021 14:15

Yabu, it's sledging.

NuniaBeeswax · 14/01/2021 14:20

Sledging, or as it was back in my day, "risking serious injury going downhill on a bumbag".

MaryShelley1818 · 14/01/2021 14:30

Sledging

Almostslimjim · 14/01/2021 14:58

Sledging if it is a person on a plastic or wooden sledge down a hill.

Sledding if it's a wooden sledge pulled by dogs (or deer)

Norwayreally · 14/01/2021 14:58

Sledging.

cretelover · 14/01/2021 14:58

Now question is do you sit on a sled or a sleigh?

cretelover · 14/01/2021 14:59

Or a sledge?

BashfulClam · 14/01/2021 15:01

Sledging on a sledge in Glasgow!

HappyFlamingo · 14/01/2021 15:02

Sledging

Godimabitch · 14/01/2021 15:02

Sledging with a sledge unless its pulled by dogs then it's a sled and sled dogs.

mawbroon · 14/01/2021 15:05

Sledging on a sledge, but I've noticed a few folk calling it a toboggan recently

Happytentoes · 14/01/2021 15:07

@NuniaBeeswax

Sledging, or as it was back in my day, "risking serious injury going downhill on a bumbag".
Sledging here, on a sledge.

But like pp, black plastic bin liners were the height of luxury where I grew up.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 14/01/2021 15:07

I think we all used to call them toboggans when I was a child (a great many years ago).

Coulddowithanap · 14/01/2021 15:08

You're both right. It's a regional thing like most of the word pronunciations on here.

NuniaBeeswax · 14/01/2021 15:10

"Sledging, or as it was back in my day, "risking serious injury going downhill on a bumbag"."

Bumbag? Binbag!

NavyFlask · 14/01/2021 15:26

It's spelled sledding and pronounced sledging.

PenCreed · 14/01/2021 15:39

Sledging on a sledge, although the more I look at the word on this thread the weirder it seems.

RogersVideo · 14/01/2021 15:43

I'm from Canada and would say you go sledding on sled (or tobagganing on a tobaggan). Horses pull a sleigh.

Sledge is a type of hammer.

peak2021 · 14/01/2021 15:45

Sledging. This is the UK, let us take back control of our language!

Ifailed · 14/01/2021 15:46

@RogersVideo
Sledge hammer comes from "slægan", Anglo-Saxon for "to strike violently".
