No free school meals during Feb half term

The new guidance on free school meals says that schools should not provide food or vouchers during Feb half term.

This won’t be needed as some general funding is going to LAs and they will be expected to provide food/support for the week schools are off.

This is bonkers, right? They’ve only just sorted it so that kids get more than a manky banana, cheese and dry bread for lunch and they’re going to switch to a different system for a week?

Does this government just really hate feeding hungry kids?

YANBU: sticking with one system for feeding disadvantaged kids would be best

YABU: it’ll be fine, no one will fall through the cracks and the transition will be seamless.

@VinylDetective also its precisely because of his high profile and who he is that he has been able to make a big impact, do you not think there were not lots of mp's already calling for this , there voices won't be so well heard.
A very famous footballer and media jumped on it so he has used his position very well , if he was just another mp , I don't think impact would be the same

Thephantom · 15/01/2021 14:37

But you are having a laugh. You don't think the government behave as if they are above the law? And do everything by the book?

Never said that. Re-read the first part of what you copied and pasted . And yes, Rashford is holier than thou. He needs to donate some of his millions towards this and not expect the middle earners to fund what he is fighting for. All them rich people with off shore accounts and all that , talking the talk to get the spotlight because everyone knows the louder you shout the more chance you get elected.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 15/01/2021 14:41

Tax avoidance is a big issue and as others have said its often us that are just keeping our heads above water that end up paying more.
Loopholes need to be closed but it is a balancing act as people may go elsewhere if its too much. But too in favour of those that avoid tax at moment , yet the layman would get pulled up for declaring one thing incorrect on a tax return.

If there had been lots of MPs calling for it, the vote in the Commons wouldn’t have gone against it. If he goes into Parliament, he’ll never be “just another MP” so not only would the impact be just as great, but he’d also be able to vote for the measures he believes in. Wtf are we debating this?

I don't believe that. I dont think he wants elected. I think he's just a kid from that background making noise to highlight the issue. It's not his responsibility to fund it. Even if he did, people would accuse him of the same thing.
Wheresmykimchi · 15/01/2021 16:14

@Puzzledandpissedoff

Because people in government don't do the same

Of course they do; in fact the government's stuffed with them, but it's entirely possible to care about more than one thing at a time ... otherwise it risks looking like pure whataboutery

No I get that , I just think that these people can't win whereas people jump in to defen the government who are as corrupt as they come
Thephantom · 15/01/2021 16:24

It's not his responsibility to fund it

It's not mine either.

Thephantom · 15/01/2021 16:25

The government doesn't have its own money. Its money is our taxes.

VinylDetective · 15/01/2021 16:32

It is. It’s mine too. I don’t want to live in a country that lets children starve. I’m surprised you do.
Thephantom · 15/01/2021 16:38

I am not defending the government. But clearly the majority of people do like it - with all its warts and all, if not they wouldn't have been voted in. If someone tries to come in with a radical change then the semi/rich get their backs up . They hope such and such don't come into power because they don't want their priviledged little private schools taken away. People want an equal society as long as it doesn't affect them.

Thephantom · 15/01/2021 16:42

This country doesn't let children starve. There is a winter covid fund, and child benefit/child tax credits. The money is given to the guardians and if the guardians are not spending it on what they should, I'd say there is a limit on what anyone can do.

No, this country (reluctantly) doesn’t allow children to starve but you appear to want it to by abdicating responsibility.
Puzzledandpissedoff · 15/01/2021 16:52

Don't try suggesting that to the government!! Grin

Looks like it's time for this again - relevant bit starts at 04.25

Through his own money.

You knew what I meant.

It is as the taxpayer.or it should be. It should be all of ours.

The covid fund - Holiday Activities and Food programme to be expanded, covering Easter, Summer and Christmas in 2021

So they will feed kids in Easter summer and Christmas as they've accepted there's an issue.

But the week in Feb is a magical.time...

Thephantom · 15/01/2021 16:59

I don't want to live in a society where children starve either, and equally I don't want ti live in a society where some people get paid millions to just kick a ball around and others get paid pittance for cleaning out the garbage and caring for the vulnerable. Robbing Peter to pay Paul is not addressing the real issue. Nobody wants to address the real issue as it could affect their little holidays abroad, second homes and their cushty little lives .

What do you mean by the last part?
VinylDetective · 15/01/2021 17:12

What do you mean by the last part?

Envy at a guess.

Thephantom · 15/01/2021 17:19

Envy 😂 Nobody wants to address the real issue because if everyone was equal that will affect them and their little lives. Everyone wants equality as long as it doesn't affect them.

Thephantom · 15/01/2021 17:20

This is getting quite tedious. I am checking out of this thread now. What will be will be. Just a bunch of mnetters having a little argument will achieve f* all

ghostvillage · 15/01/2021 17:40

My DCs school have just been told today that the government voucher scheme does not start until. Monday so they are funding their vouchers for the last two weeks and bought them from a local supermarket.

BonnieDundee · 15/01/2021 17:50

Bleating on about "hungry children" is getting tiresome now

Oh how terribly dreadful for you Hmm

Parker231 · 15/01/2021 17:57

I’m assuming none of you volunteer at a foodbank? I do one day a week and last week a nurse came in to collect a food parcel. Her partner had been made redundant and she was waiting to be given extra shifts to make up the lost salary. They have three primary aged children but after paying essential bills and their rent, they had no money left for food.
Foodbanks cater for everyone not just those with long term drug and alcohol problems.

I’m hopefully that Marcus Rashford can make some long term positive changes to how children in this country are fed. It’s amazing what he’s already achieved and has an experienced team working with him.

Katyppp · 15/01/2021 18:17

Without knowing anything about Marcus Radford other thsn they like his campaign on free school meals, people are assuming he would be a good MP.
I think that tells you all you need to know about the intellect and thought processes of sone on here.
Yet again, a perfectly valid point, this time about MR's tax arrangements, is brushed aside because it doesn't fit the simple agenda of certain posters.
MPs do the same apparently. Do they? Even Labour MPs? And that's OK because our hero of the moment does it?
It's like walking into a 6th form debating club. Passionate, emotional, but absolutely clueless.
Pay for free lunches for all low-income families by getting rid of subdidised meals for MPs and not giving Dominic Cummings a payrise?
Absolutely clueless.

donewithitalltodayandxmas · 15/01/2021 19:29

@vynldetective if he went in to parliament of course he would be just another mp, with just the one vote like all the others.
