AIBU re hospital staff begging for freebies on social media?

I’m fully prepared to get flamed for this, and I want to say I really do appreciate everything NHS staff are doing at the moment, but I can’t help but feel it’s a bit grabby and entitled to be asking for freebies on social media. The post in question was from a HCA who was asking for hand cream for their ‘poor sore hands’. She tagged about twenty colleagues in the post and also named the ward in question (not ICU).

It would be understandable if there was nowhere open to get hand cream from but it’s sold in Boots, Superdrug, all supermarkets and online. Very cheaply available as well, which is why this seems really grabby, entitled and a bit unprofessional if I’m honest. Lots of body shop and Avon reps have been tagged in the post and no doubt they’ll feel pressured into donating stuff and meeting the cost themselves (I’ve done Avon in the past and know how it all works).

For some reason this has really rubbed me up the wrong way. But like Ive said I’m prepared to be told I’m out of order.

A friend sells Temple Spa products and said she was receiving frequent emails/messages on social media from NHS staff requesting her to give them free products.

She has been donating handcream/face cream, lip balm and foot cream since March to a hospital and hospice. But if she says this to a message/email she's had some really nasty responses from the individual.

I guess some people will always be on the 'take'.

@Hotelhelp

100% with you OP.

Also seen posts like ‘my car has broke down and I need to get to work (on the front line as a nurse)’ ... so you want your car fixed for free basically yea?

We get this a lot on our local Facebook, last one was asking for a free bike as they are a nurse and can't get to work - they were later seen trying to sell the bike on the same group. Not the sharpest knife in the drawer
coldwaterfeed · 14/01/2021 12:51

I bet that Vaseline Hand Cream is to blame, it makes people think HCP needs oodles of cream.

I’ve seen this a lot on our local NextDoor group and it feels similar to people during the first lockdown using their “key worker” status to jump the queue at Homebase Shock

Now while I recognise the hard work they put in and all they do, there are a lot of companies offering significant discounts to NHS workers currently and let’s not forget that their income is probably one of the most secure currently while thousands of families are facing redundancy, having their businesses not be able to operate etc

EmmanuelleMakro · 14/01/2021 12:53

Completely agree OP. O know someone who works part time in admin for the NHS and is always blagging stuff on the back of being ‘NHS’

Candleabra · 14/01/2021 12:56

@CodenameVillanelle

I'd bet money that this is a MLM scam.
Just about to type this. Especially as it's hand cream.

Wow deja vu, saw this exact same thread during the last lockdown.

I’ve not seen any begging posts on fb.

Just because you haven’t seen them doesn’t mean it’s not happening. I assume this is just a thinly veiled way of accusing me of making it up, which I can assure you I’m not. Why would I? I don’t know if you’ve noticed but other posters have also encountered it. Unless you think they are making it up as well?

I’ve seen quite a few requests for free car repairs for key workers on local FB groups.

PollyRoulson · 14/01/2021 13:03

More than happy to give someone some hand cream if it makes their live eaiser ..... never seen anyone asking though

No, I REALLY wouldn't begrudge NHS asking for donations of hand cream. Probably tons of us have got unwanted smellies in drawers that could be gifted.
Shedload of crap, shit pay - grabby? Just no.

GlobeUs · 14/01/2021 13:05

We've had a lot of freebies offered, and yet some staff are still asking for more.

That said, I needed a bike service (essential, it was unridable) and I couldn't get a spot because it was key workers only at the local bike shop. This meant I couldn't get to medical appointments, a doctor heard about it and e-mailed around colleagues to see if anyone could let me use their space.

My bike is now home, fixed and working nicely and I can safely get to medical appointments.

So whilst some people are being grabby, others are being very kind and offering them back to the community.

@ButtWormHole

I think it’s disgusting to be annoyed by this. Our NHS are stretched beyond breaking point and if I can buy some hand cream and make someone feel as though I value their work then I will.

I think that’s even cheekier than asking for free hand cream! Why can’t they just get the bus or a taxi (taxi companies here are giving key worker discount) or walk? Or you know, go to a garage and pay for it because they are still earning and can afford it.

DD got free sky installation because she is NHS. She didnt ask, they were sorting it out and the guy asked what she did (as they were struggling to find an appoinment time) and when she told him asked her to hang on. Then said he had put a credit on her account so that she wouldnt have to pay for it.

But she wouldnt dream of basically saying "I am an NHS hero, what are you going to give me" which is what a lot of them seem to be doing!

And I don't know anyone who's had Covid. Does that mean it doesn't exist? Hmm
PrincessBuggerPants · 14/01/2021 13:07

I've seen the MLM huns getting people to buy hand creams off them to donate to NHS workers.

ilhahih · 14/01/2021 13:08

I don't think they should be begging for freebies. I don't think people should be posting things like "My car's broken down. Help! (Keyworker)".
Take the car to the garage and get it fixed like everyone has to.

Not everyone working in the NHS is on COVID wards. Not everyone is "on their knees". I know the conditions are really terrible for those who are. I also know two doctors from other fields who have now been drafted in to work on COVID wards. Neither of them have worked outside of their specialities for over 25 years.
So I do have an idea of what is going on... but... as I said, not everyone is working under horrific conditions just because they are HCAs or medical personnel of any kind. The begging needs to stop. Surely they are getting paid for their work? Which is a hell of a lot more than a lot of other people are getting with unemployment rising and people struggling to make ends meet on furlough.

And you can think what you like about covid. It makes no difference to me 🤷🏻‍♀️

Viviennemary · 14/01/2021 13:11

It's cheeky and needs to be stopped.

user1471462428 · 14/01/2021 13:12

I worked in the last lockdown on a covid ward and we were told we couldn’t accept a gift over £5 and anything we did have had to declared to the ward sister. The NFU got us lovely Easter eggs for our kids but she banned anything else. I was really touched by the egg but also felt anything bigger was inappropriate. It did help thinking that people were kind to us but we’d never ask for anything ( I hope).

Thing is, I don’t think this particular lady wanted ‘unwanted smellies’ from someone’s drawer.
