Trying Gousto for the first time...

Is it worth it? I’m using a discount code from a friend.

@weaselish
Used-many thanks.

mowglika · 13/01/2021 22:54

Chiming in to add I love gousto too, and like pps it totally overhauled the way we eat. Reason it’s getting so many recommendations is because it really is so convenient and more importantly broadens your horizons food wise.

I keep all the cards and now rotate around 20-30 favourites, and just buy the ingredients myself. we get a varied meal and the kids are learning to eat all sorts that I would never have known how to incorporate into a meal. Highly recommend!

mowglika · 13/01/2021 22:55

You can also google the recipes which are all online but using the boxes gives you a feel for what the recipes should taste like vs what you might knock together Smile

ArosGartref · 13/01/2021 22:55

Gousto ingredients are usually quite high quality - free range/organic meat etc so you may not be comparing like for like. Of course, that's not necessarily important.

It's definitely good for inspiration if you're stuck in a rut and low commitment. We have a box once a fortnight and pause/skip the subscription as needed.

Ithinkim · 13/01/2021 23:01

The Facebook page is jam packed full of people complaining how much the quality has dropped off over the last few months, missing items and putrid chicken thighs Envy

Just get the recipe online and do it yourself. The portions aren't big either, my teenagers eat a portion that's supposed to serve 2. It works out very expensive and they aren't greedy.

MirandaMarple · 13/01/2021 23:02

I was hugely disappointed by it. The first and last time I used it an ingredient from each meal was missing, and some things had leaked.

I don't see the difference in meal planning and doing an online shop yourself. All the inspiration you need for meal ideas is readily available online.

CorianderBee · 13/01/2021 23:09

Yes we really like it

UndertheCedartree · 13/01/2021 23:12

I use Hello Fresh sometimes (you don't have to get it every week if you sign up - you just choose when you want it) and it's great. Would get it more if I could afford to - it is obviously quite expensive.

AnxiousWeirdo · 13/01/2021 23:27

I did the trial for a quid and kept the hoisin pork with cucumber pickle in my repertoire. It's bloody delicious! If I had the funds I'd definitely get them regularly

bonfireheart · 13/01/2021 23:47

PP, honestly right now the last two supermarkets I tried online either didn't have any delivery slots or half the items I wanted in stock, adding to my anxiety. The idea of physically going to a supermarket right now with my health conditions stresses me out. At least with Gousto I know what I'm getting and when - probably won't carry on after lockdown but right now it saves me all sorts of hassle and still cheaper and healthier than a takeout.

Thewheelsonthebus23 · 14/01/2021 07:24

I was thinking of trying this but I've noticed you have to choose 2 or 4 people.
There's three of us, myself, ds16 and dd13.
People who've done it, would you recommend trying a 2 or 4 person box with the three of us?

louisejxxx · 14/01/2021 07:53

We had about 4 boxes in the Autumn last year and I’ve just kept the recipe cards and pick a couple to get the ingredients for when I get a shop. My favourites are the lasagne and cottage pie (neither of which I was confident enough to make myself until Gousto Blush - I always bought shop-ready ones!)

Londonista123 · 14/01/2021 08:00

I've tried most meal boxes and Gousto by far best for choice and variety also easy to filter each weeks recipes by things like main meat, cooking time and healthy options. I have kept all the recipe cards which helpfully have all the weights and measures detailed (Hello Fresh only list ingredients) and I mix and match now some weeks if I know we are busy I order for convenience others if I have more time I just choose recipes from the folder and buy ingredients myself.

I agree with this. Have tried both and kept coming back to Gousto. My main criticism initially was all the excess packaging, but they are getting better.

aleC with two teenagers 4 likely Grin, but their portions are generous imo.

Here's a 40% off code for Gousto if anyone wants it.

Champagneforeveryone · 14/01/2021 08:05

We love Gousto and have used it on and off for years now. Currently on a break as we have too many recipe cards to fit in the folder and spending a couple months working our way through them (and saving money!)
I really enjoy cooking so it's actually a bit of a treat for me, and as I work shifts takes so much pressure off in terms of not having to menu plan or shop.

Autumn101 · 14/01/2021 08:09

AleC4 - there’s just 3 of us too so I’ve ordered from Hello Fresh instead as they had the option for 3. It’s me and two hungry DCs and was a good amount for us.

Had our first box yesterday and last nights dinner was lovely!

I could meal plan and look up recipes but frankly after so long with restrictions and not going out and constant meals I was fed up. The Hello Fresh meals are chosen and cooked by the DC, 10 and 12 - gives me a break and they’ve been so excited and enthusiastic about it and it’s good for their cooking skills so win win all round ha

Baboutheocelot · 14/01/2021 08:14

We have been getting them for about six months and we really like it. We’ve hardly had any meals we didn’t like. I’m not keen on the recipes with tofu, it’s a bit tasteless. The portions are very big but I quite often save some for lunch, or if it’s something the kids will like we split it between all four of us.
It is pricey but you can stop and just use their recipe cards after you’ve got your favourites. We are very lazy so it’s convenient for us and worth the money.

DarceyDashwood · 14/01/2021 08:16

I’m trying Hello Fresh for the first time next week which is similar! I got a £20 discount code from a friend which means we are getting x 4 meals (for two) for £11.99 so really cheap!

HavelockVetinari · 14/01/2021 08:28

Thanks @weaselish I've just used your code, I'll report back. It's my turn to cook next week, DH will no doubt call it cheating but I think it's a fab idea!

HavelockVetinari · 14/01/2021 08:29

Hmm, it won't let me check out! Sad

StCharlotte · 14/01/2021 08:37

We used it a few years ago! Kept the cards and some recipes have become regulars.

I learnt new techniques and I thought the portions were surprisingly generous. Too much packaging though.

StCharlotte · 14/01/2021 08:39

No idea how the exclamation mark got in there. I'm not that enthusiastic about it!

Pintsizedblondie197 · 14/01/2021 08:56

We used it a couple of years ago and we really liked the recipes and the fact everything was portioned out so there was no waste. I do think it's expensive without the discount considering you still have to buy food for the rest of the week and any household items. The recipes are all listed on Gousto's website too.

mowglika · 14/01/2021 10:55

@HavelockVetinari try my invite link you get 50% off the first box and 30% off the first month and I get £15 for referring you. No worries if you don’t want to use it, there are 30-50% codes kicking about online anyway
