Not to take job as it's 1 hour commute ?

pollyputaket · 13/01/2021 21:26

Basically I've been looking for a job for a while now and the only job I've been offered is 1 hour commute.
It's a 5 min walk from my house to train station
Then 50 min train journey
Plus 5 min walk from train station to office.
£11 train per day travel
So that is £55 on fares per week
Aibu not to take it for this reason ?
What would you do?

@MaudHatter I'm not being made to apply for jobs.
I don't have to look or apply for any job.
It's my choice because I want to return back to work

pollyputaket · 14/01/2021 19:18

The only alternative is to keep applying for other jobs.
I have applied for about 4 today

But if you don’t get a job are you using your own savings ? Or relying on help ?
I’d take the job tbh . You’ll have to start somewhere .

Skynorth · 14/01/2021 19:22

Commute of only an hour?
Lucky for some! Take the job.

pollyputaket · 14/01/2021 19:23

@MaudHatter at the min I receive ESA

OP posts:
pollyputaket · 14/01/2021 19:24

@Skynorth adding in walking etc it's gonna be over 1 hr 30 mins

OP posts:
MaudHatter · 14/01/2021 19:27

In that case I’d wait for something closer . Long travelling times won’t be great for your health if you’ve been out of the workplace for a while .

ssd · 14/01/2021 19:33

I left a min wage job 5 mins walk away for one with an hours commute either end but more hours

Its actually only about £60 a month more as I pay for my train fares now and I dont get free food and drinks now

BUT that £60 is better in my pocket than out of it.

june2007 · 14/01/2021 19:35

Depends slightly on pay, if your out of pocket don,t take, if you are making a profit take.

ssd · 14/01/2021 19:41

The op isn't out of pocket?

Lookslikerainted · 14/01/2021 19:47

I’d take it, totally normal, also if you need this job take it!

Lookslikerainted · 14/01/2021 19:49

@pollyputaket

So at the min I'm not working and I have £160 a month left So I would obviously have extra money this way but is it worth it £200 on travel a month seems like a huge chunk
How are you supporting yourself currently? Yes it’s worth it as you would be better off finically and supporting yourself.
Chel098 · 14/01/2021 19:51

I’ve recently took a job with travel costs going from 0 to £150 a month. Most people pay some form of travel costs even if it’s in petrol. Your too hung up on your travel costs OP.

You have money left over because your outgoings are low! How much money do you want spare?

pollyputaket · 14/01/2021 19:54

@Chel098 my last job I used to have around £700 left at the end of the month.
I think that's probably why it feels like a lot
It was a much better paid job and walking distance from mine

OP posts:
Chel098 · 14/01/2021 20:05

I can understand that however if it’s just for a while until you find another job it should be okay and at least it will leave you with more money than you have left currently.

ssd · 14/01/2021 20:07

But did you leave that job and have to go on benefits due to anxiety, maybe your old job with better money was the cause?

bobbojobbo · 15/01/2021 10:52

MN is south east centric. 80 % of the uk have a commute of 30 minutes or less

You're UK centric. I was the first response on the thread saying it was normal, and I'm not even in the UK, let alone in the SE.
1hr commute is perfectly normal pretty much anywhere.

wowfudge · 15/01/2021 11:01

Having read your posts OP, the commuting is for 6 months, not forever. I think you'd be very shortsighted not to take the job. If you get something better for you then that's great. It's easier to get a job if you are already in one. £160 left after outgoings v. the best part of £400. No brainer.

Margerine78 · 15/01/2021 17:27

My last job where I had to commute was 90 mins, with a 30 min walk to the first train, then two tube changes with a long walk in-between each, then another (always late) overground train, then another walk up a massive hill. Twice a day (there and back) for about 10 years.

If I had 50 mins flat on just one train (no switching) I'd have liked that, you can work or read a book?

Mummacake · 15/01/2021 17:40

OP, I'd probably take it tbh as it's not going to get any easier out there. Is there an opportunity for career progression or not? That would be a big factor in deciding if it's worth short term pain for longer term gain.

lilybetsy · 15/01/2021 17:48

You are VVV unreasonable. Its even an EASY hours commute. you would rather continue to take tax payers money than put your self out a little ?

not acceptable in my opinion

Bakingcupcake · 15/01/2021 18:05

I wouldn't take it as seems too far and cost of travel for a min wage job doesn't add up like you say

DoveOfPiss · 15/01/2021 18:06

I've just done 3 years as a student with an hour's commute each way, £60 a week on fuel. As you say, it's only for 6 months until you can wfh, the evenings are already getting lighter and the clocks change in March.
I'm relishing my new job, it's given me back a sense of purpose. If you feel you need this, go for it. You can always keep looking for something else. Smile

roxanne119 · 15/01/2021 18:12

Take it it’s easier to find a job when you have a job . It also looks better not to have space on your cv .

Biddie191 · 15/01/2021 18:16

An hour isn't log, I commute further, drive just over an hour, and consider myself quite lucky. Personally if I'd been looking a while I'd take pretty much anything, then you can continue to look for something better / closer to home, but it's easier to find something when you're already working.
