Not to take job as it's 1 hour commute ?

pollyputaket · 13/01/2021 21:26

Basically I've been looking for a job for a while now and the only job I've been offered is 1 hour commute.
It's a 5 min walk from my house to train station
Then 50 min train journey
Plus 5 min walk from train station to office.
£11 train per day travel
So that is £55 on fares per week
Aibu not to take it for this reason ?
What would you do?

I'd take it. It's standard

Cheeseandlobster · 13/01/2021 21:29

That is not a long commute. And surely you can buy a season ticket. Use the 50 mins to read, catch up on paperwork, sleep or just look out of the window

pollyputaket · 13/01/2021 21:29

I think it's because all my other jobs have been less then 15 mins commute

I suppose it depends on what you are used to but DH, me, and pretty much all our friends commuted (pre coronavirus) from various places in greater london or the home counties into central London most days....your commute would be considered both easy and cheap!

2021mumma · 13/01/2021 21:30

That’s a pretty normal commute and if you’ve been looking for a while take it till something better comes along

Hankunamatata · 13/01/2021 21:30

Do you currently have a job?

sleepylittlebunnies · 13/01/2021 21:30

I think it depends what your pay is and whether you have time constraints, like school runs.

Mackerelpizza · 13/01/2021 21:30

Does it pay enough for you to afford the commute?

BigSandyBalls2015 · 13/01/2021 21:31

Standard commute, if not easier than majority

BendingSpoons · 13/01/2021 21:31

I'd definitely take the job. That's at least quite a straight forward commute and if you can get a seat, would give you time to read etc. Plus you said you have been looking a while. But only you know your situation, how much you need a job.

Whammyyammy · 13/01/2021 21:31

In these uncertain times id take it. Can yiu buy a cheaper train ticket if you buy a monthly one etc? An hours not too bad

sleepylittlebunnies · 13/01/2021 21:31

And how long the shifts are.

Darbs76 · 13/01/2021 21:31

Sounds around normal for me - living in south east. I know in my homeland of north wales no-one commutes that far though! If you need a job I’d take it and keep looking for something more local. You can’t turn down jobs at the moment

clartychops · 13/01/2021 21:31

If it was driving then it does get wearing but 50 min on a train with only 5 minutes either side sounds quite nice.

Brefugee · 13/01/2021 21:31

well you've been very lucky up to now. Here in Germany a one hour commute isn't considered grounds to refuse a job offer so you don't get benefits

TheFlis12345 · 13/01/2021 21:32

We can’t really comment without knowing salaries and if the £55 travel is worth it or not? An hour is a pretty standard commute though.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 13/01/2021 21:32

It depends on the job, the pay, lots of factors really.

Both dh and I commuted an hour each way (in opposite directions) when ds was a baby. I loved my 45 minutes on the train - peaceful and a chance to read (pre mobiles and kindle, an actual paperback! ).

MustardMitt · 13/01/2021 21:32

I would only take it if there was an increase in what I was currently earning, above and beyond the commute costs.

But I work a mile away (when not WFH) so I'm possibly not your best audience!

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 13/01/2021 21:33

I’m used to an hours commute so to me that’s nothing.
..., can you afford not to take it?

Hotcuppatea · 13/01/2021 21:33

It depends on the job I suppose and whether you feel its worth travelling for. And the likelihood of you being offered one closer anytime soon.

Doveyouknow · 13/01/2021 21:33

Sounds like an average commute in London apart from the train fare. That would be very cheap if you were commuting into London.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 13/01/2021 21:34

One hour is nothing. I've done a two and a half hour each way drive to work before and often travel over an hour to different clinics and home visits. It all depends if you can afford the train fare.

Brighterthansunflowers · 13/01/2021 21:34

That’s a normal commute really, season tickets will reduce the cost.

If you need the job then YWBU to turn it down. If you don’t need the job then crack on.

fluffi · 13/01/2021 21:35

An hour commute is a good commute ... especially if only 1 train and no changes. Lots of people do longer ... or have to change which stops you being stuck in your book / work / phone.

£55 a week on fares isn't unreasonable.

topcat2014 · 13/01/2021 21:36

MN is south east centric. 80 % of the uk have a commute of 30 minutes or less.

Plus you never get that time back.

However in the absence of another job I would probably take it
