...we need to open schools ASAP, and ensure the government is true to their word that schools ARE the last thing to close and the first thing to open, to put your thoughts and experiences to those in power and those with influence (e.g by writing to your MP, government ministers, newspapers).

I appreciate not everyone will agree.

Nope don't agree

You sound very lucky that you aren't vulnerable but in England schools were closed because DCs transmitting it and it was getting out of control.

They haven't closed schools for fun. It's not to annoy you, they are fully aware of impact on children and their education. It's miserable but it is what it is.

1Morewineplease · 13/01/2021 20:47

No, I don't agree. Whilst children don't generally suffer from Covid, teachers, TAs and other school staff may well suffer. My area has had to close schools, entirely with no regard at all to key workers or vulnerable children because of huge staff absences.
Don't forget that many staff have been discouraged from wearing masks due to upsetting little ones and many staff aren't young and may have vulnerable adults to live with/care for.
Please try to think about other people.

I think now we have a vaccine, teachers and school staff need to be prioritized and vaccinated asap. I understand schools need to be shut right now but they need to be opened up soon...the damage this is doing to children is terrifying.

Kljnmw3459 · 13/01/2021 20:50

They will open asap, once case vaccinations are well underway and situation hospitals is better

MollieMaeve · 13/01/2021 20:50

Three members of staff from my children’s school are in hospital (1 in intensive care) with covid. They caught it in the last week of term (as did 17 children in the class of 30 that they share, most of whom have passed it onto family members).

So no, I don’t agree.

Almostslimjim · 13/01/2021 20:52

Nope.

Though I do feel more stuff should be closed (Starbucks, garden centres etc) in order to speed up the reopening of schools.

superram · 13/01/2021 20:53

Nope.

This is what we are all hoping for. School staff do not want school closures as children's education is suffering eg reading levels falling and attention is waning as well as social skills .
Winterwoollies · 13/01/2021 21:00

I might have agreed a couple of weeks ago but I have known one person who died, one person who nearly died and two people still in intensive care from Covid. Two in their 30s, one 40s and the person who died was in their early 50s. It has completely made me sit up and realise I was utterly complacent.

Throckmorton · 13/01/2021 21:01

Terrible idea - we're in the middle of a pandemic that spreads via having people in close contact, like classrooms

Watchingbehindmyhands · 13/01/2021 21:04

Just hear of another school staff this evening. That’s 4 within a 5 mile radius of me. If that is playing out across the country, it doesn’t bear thinking about. School staff don’t deserve this and have families, friends and people who depend on them too.

If you want schools open quickly, you need to be prepared to ask your MP for the funds to make it work as safely as possible. For everyone’s sake.

WeAreShiningStars · 13/01/2021 21:19

I agree teachers, TAs etc should be vaccinated as more of a priority than they are currently ... but it takes 2 jabs to be considered protected over a period of 2-3 months on the UK schedule ... it's going to be a while regardless.

Not really that arsed about it when click and collect, garden centres, etc are still open. Mind you the kids in private schools are still getting a fantastic education. My dd still has a place in school, that I’ve fought for. Not fair on the rest of the kids though.

Where are you? Not a single solitary case of a teacher being seriously ill anywhere near me. You’d think them numbers would make the news.
Rosebel · 13/01/2021 21:26

Need to get teachers and nursery staff vaccinated really. I don't think it's going to happen though.
Trouble is anyone going in to work is at risk. They can't vaccine all key workers and older people and vulnerable people all at once. It would be crazy.
We do need schools reopened but it's not safe at the moment.

TableFlowerss · 13/01/2021 21:27

Teachers should be priority for the vaccine. The people in front line working roles like this should be pushed up the list, I’m shocked they weren’t before most others

QualityRoads · 13/01/2021 21:45

Nope. Not until teachers are vaccinated, and only then when children can be spaced out suitably. Means mega-bucks more spent on education which would be a good thing imo.

1Morewineplease · 13/01/2021 21:53

@pollylocketpickedapocket
We're in Kent. Entire schools have closed due to insufficient staffing levels and pupils who have tested positive.

1Morewineplease · 13/01/2021 21:53

And yes, it has made the news.

Whyisitsodifficult · 13/01/2021 21:54

Yes get teachers who want to be vaccinated done as a priority. I really don’t understand why my 83 year old should be a priority as he can stay at home. My kids need their education and all the other skills that you learn whilst being at school.

Coldilox · 13/01/2021 21:59

@Whyisitsodifficult your 83 year old relative is a priority because she is at high risk of getting seriously ill. Right now the priority is to ease the pressure on the health service, so we need to v city ate the most vulnerable groups first. Once those are done, then we can start prioritising by risk of exposure

PaigeMatthews · 13/01/2021 22:00

Op, maybe have a little think about how selfish you're being.
